With so many automakers looking to break free from the dull and stale auto designs, a few brands have been left to collect everyone else’s dust.

Mitsubishi is one of those brands that appears to have been content with rolling out models with designs that left a lot to be desired. But the Japanese brand seems to be turning the corner — finally! — and for the first time in seemingly forever, it will roll out a trio of new concepts at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show next month.

Not a lot of details have been divulged about these concepts, other than the fact that the company is preparing all three as the first batches of its new "@earth" philosophy.

One is an SUV that’s been dubbed as the Concept Grand Cruiser Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, or Concept GC-PHEV if you find the other name too long. This concept appears to be a future version of the Montero SUV, highlighted by a new front profile with aggressive edges and a new headlight setup that’s eerily similar to the Range Rover Evoque .

The next concept is called the Concept Cross Runner Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, or XR-PHEV. Mitsubishi says that this concept will be introduced as a compact crossover with coupe-like styling cues, possibly taking the place of the current Outlander Sport in the coming years.

Finally, there’s the Concept Active Runabout, or Concept AR. In addition to being the simplest-named of the three concepts, the Concept AR is being touted as a compact MPV that, unlike the two others, will come with a conventional gasoline engine with turbocharging and direct-injection technologies.

Based on the teaser photos of the concepts, all three appear to be a far departure from what we’re used to when it comes to Mitsubishi. That’s a great thing because, if for nothing else, the Japanese brand’s move to the present is long overdue.

Mitsubishi ’s biggest seller brings a number of new updates for 2014 to increase refinement, style and interior technology. Both models move up a notch in driving ability, helping maintain the 2014 Outlander Sport’s class-leading status among the compact crossover market segment.

A new LED running light design is available up front, along with some snazzy blue LED brake lights out back for 2014. A black leading edge of the roof is also quite stylish, and marks out the Outlander Sport SE at the top of the range. In the top trim level, the 2014 model year also brings better leather and a a standard display audio screen.

All Outlander Sports now pack a new balancer shaft for the engine, extra insulation and redesigned steering wheel controls. Overall, the Outlander Sport is still one of the sportiest and best-handling compact crossovers out there.

Is the Mitsu ’s tight handling and build quality enough of an incentive over the Jeep Patriot ? How about the turbocharged Nissan Juke ?

This fall’s second Mitsubishi lifestyle concept car looks good enough to cause a double take. The 2014 Outlander H360 Winter Edition adds rich white paint and 20-inch wheels outside, plus a gorgeous quilted leather and suede cabin, to create a very cozy and fashionable way to hit the slopes.

In partnership with lifestyle brand H360 and professional snowboarder Bryan "Guch" Iguchi, Mitsubishi has transformed their popular seven-seat crossover into the ultimate winter shuttle. The styling outside is refined and classy, with those giant wheels really transforming the regular Outlander’s lines into something much sleeker and sportier than the standard model.

The beauty of these H360 makeovers is that they can inspire other Mitsubishi owners to personalize their own cars, and draw people into the brands by reinforcing their outdoor credentials.

Looking like a mix between a Range Rover Evoque and an Audi RS4 Avant , the Outlander H360 Winter Edition is powered by a smooth V-6 engine with S-AWC traction and a very quick sprint pace versus some four-cylinder crossover competitors.

More importantly, the H360 Winter Edition will look at home in Beaver Creek Ski Resort’s valet parking line. A host of interior and exterior additions make up this concept car, which will do the rounds at major auto shows this year.

These H360 concepts are just design exercises, and are not for sale themselves. Even so, they show the scope of accessories and versatility of one of the only value-priced crossovers to offer a third row of seats.

Mitsubishi just revealed a pair of fitness and adventure-themed concepts, based on the best-selling Outlander and Outlander Sport . The Summer Edition is a thorough personalization effort, on par with the high-dollar luxury car makeovers from Kahn Design .

The custom Outlander Sport shows off: unique burnt orange metallic paintwork and 20-inch Vossen wheels, with matching satin graphite accents all around and sticky track tires. The wheel size jumps a full 2 inches over the 18-inch rims that are otherwise standard on all the Outlander Sport trims, which start from just $19,170 in manual front-drive configuration.

This H360 Summer Edition is based on the higher-range model, with a SportTronic paddle shift automatic and Mitsubishi ’s AWC four-wheel-drive system. Thule roof bars and matching Trek bikes are only a preview of the inside of this fitness machine.

Created with the help of celebrity fitness coach Jay Cardiello, the Outlander Sport Summer Edition is packing some bold color accents and numerous fitness and outdoor adventure gear. Hard-wired chargers are awesome details for the built-in GoPro and iPad mini in the grey suede headlining.

Mitsubishi ’s product offensive and commitment to the American market took a very public step recently with comments from top company executives quoted in the Detroit Free Press indicating the 2015 Galant and a possible Montero Sport replacement are in the cards after years of being missing in action.

The latest hints from the secretive company presage what many experts predict to be a surprise reveal of the production-ready Galant sedan concept at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show starting November 22nd of this year.

The new 2015 Galant is expected to soften some of the sharpest corners of the 2008 Mitsubishi Concept ZT pictured here, as well as insert the Outlander ’s sophisticated gasoline, diesel and hybrid powertrain choices to ready the car for sale.

Replacing the once-stylish U.S.-market Galant as well as the unloved Diamante that stopped production after the 2012 model year, the new sports sedan is charged with filling the void above the company’s brand-new 2014 Mirage and Outlander Sport . Prices start at a projected $26,000 up to $35,000 for the plug-in hybrid model, with the car’s arrival in U.S. showrooms in summer 2014 expected.

The dimensions of the next Galant are expected to match the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry , as the car aims to be Mitsu’s key large sedan model across a variety of markets in Asia, Australia, EMEA and the Americas.

We have heard all kinds of crazy rumors about the next-gen Lancer Evo here recently and now we have one more to add to the pile. A report from AutoCar points to a near certainty that the new Evo XI will bear a 500-horsepower hybrid powerplant and aim directly against models like Nissan GT-R.

Mitsubishi is set to unveil the next generation for the standard Mitsubishi Lancer sometime next year and, for the first time ever, it will feature a hybrid variant. According to AutoCar’s report, the same treatment will also be applied to the Evo version. The model is said to borrow racing technology from the MiEV Evolution II Pikes Peak , which will guarantee stunning performance.

This technology making its way onto the next Evo depends on how customers accept Mitsubishi ’s new plug-in hybrid PHEV technology. However, at the recent Pikes Peak event it proved amazing capabilities, so the company has big hopes for it.

The new hybrid system will combine a 2.0-liter gas engine with two 80-horsepower electric motors for a total output of 500 horsepower. The Evo XI will be inspired by the Concept-RA , which was unveiled at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, and will be unveiled a few months after the standard Lancer.

Mitsubishi introduced the Lancer nomenclature to its lineup back in 1973 and since then the model became one of its most successful models, with more than six million units being sold over the years. Depending on the market, Lancer was sold under different names, ranging from Dodge Colt (first generation) in the United States and up to Galant Fortis (current generation) on the Japanese one.

The model was sold under different body versions, and starting 1992 it received an Evolution version - which is basically a high-performance version featuring a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive system.

For the 2014 model year, the Lancer continues to be offered in four trim levels: ES, SE, GT and Ralliart - each of them offering different upgrades for the new year. Still, you shouldn’t expect anything big, because all the major updates were reserved for the next generation.

For years, Mitsubishi has barely made a dent in the automotive world. The rise of competition and the general ambivalence towards automotive progress have played their part in that.

But if there’s one model that Mitsubishi can still rely on these days, it’s the Lancer .

Tried, tested and proven to the hilt, the Lancer has become the standard-bearer for everything that Mitsubishi has represented in the auto industry. That’s all well and good, especially for a brand that relies on the model so much.

One particular trim for the Lancer that Mitsubishi has high hopes for is the Lancer Sportback. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a lot of people are high on this model, proudly carrying the Lancer badge all while coming in a space-saving hatchback trim that’s far removed from the mighty Lancer Evolution models.

Even though it’s not as powerful as its Evolution brother, the Lancer Sportback has plenty of endearing qualities about it. And again, for Mitsubishi, that’s a win in its own right.

Mitsubishi is preparing to enter this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held from June 25 to June 30 with a specially prepared MiEV Evolution II all-electric prototype. Mitsubishi will have two entries in the competition and is hoping for an overall first place. Mitsubishi climbed the Pikes Peak last year for the first time when it managed to finish second in the Electric Division.

The prototype prepared for this year’s climb once again uses parts used in production vehicles combined with a high-capacity battery and high-output motors both specially designed by MMC’s suppliers.

When compared to the model raced last year , the new MiEV Evolution II receives a S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system that helps increase handling and control.

The first MiEV Evolution II will be driven by two-time Dakar Rally overall champion Hiroshi Masuoka and the second one by Greg Tracy, six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage debuted at the 2013 New York International Auto Show . And while its power may not impress, its mpg may start making hybrid cars start shaking in their low-rolling-resistance tires.

Let’s face it the Mirage isn’t the sexiest car to roll out of Mitsu’s factory; in fact, it’s just another econo-hatch that easily blends into the scenery as you head down the highway. Mitsubishi is hoping to change that with the new model and this time around, the Mirage will try to make its way back into the hearts of Americans for the first time since 2002.

The car has been redesigned with all new styling that Mitsu hopes will attract new buyers, which is something the floundering company needs to help keep it in the American market. Unfortunately, it is heading into a market – the sub-compact hatchback market – that is quickly becoming overfull.

Perhaps its practicality and relatively large amount of storage space will help push it over the other motorized roller-skates on the market.
