The look is unmistakably Jeep, but everything else on the 2011 Grand Cherokee is a departure from the old. Outside Jeep ditched the body cladding look of the previous three generations, and has gone for a more unified appearance. It’s a combination of smooth and sharp lines that’s further accented by the reduction of the grille and headlight area. It looks almost like how Toyota would design a Jeep.

Jeep wants to up play the premium SUV elements of the new Grand Cherokee. For starters, Jeep is being very vocal about the new Grand Cherokee sharing a platform with the Mercedes M-Class. Inside the layout has not changed greatly, but the materials quality has been given a big upgrade.

The engine choices have now gone from five to two. The bread ’n butter engine will be the new flex-fuel flexible 3.6-liter V-6 engine that delivers 280 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 N•m) @ 4,800 rpm. Second one is a reworked version of the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. It now delivers 360 hp and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (up 3 hp and 1 lb.-ft.).

Updated 05/12/2010: Jeep today announced prices for the 2011 Grand Cherokee that will be available in showrooms in June. It’s no wonder that BMW had a pretty uneventful New York Auto Show; they didn’t even get a chance to display all the models they brought with them.

According to the New York Post, six BMWs, including what that they decribed as the BMW 550i Sophisto, were stolen while they were being processed at the a processing center at a New Jersey port.

We haven’t really heard a whole lot about the supposed 550i Sophisto so we’re venturing a guess that this might be some kind of exclusive 5-Series with a ’Sophisto Gray’ paint job. As for the other BMWs that were boosted with the 550i Sophisto, there was a 535i xDrive, a 650i, and a 750Li xDrive. All these cars were supposed to be displayed at the New York Auto Show so you can just imagine how upset BMW was when they showed up for the event six cars short.

BMW has not yet issued a statement apart from a very short release saying that they have "provided all the information to the authorities."
We’ll keep you posted for the latest updates.

You won’t see anything like this happen in Geneva or in Frankfurt. Only in New York, ladies and gentlemen!

In what has become an unwanted yearly tradition, a bunch of rowdy teenagers decided that the New York Auto Show wasn’t getting enough action so they decided to bring the action to it. After leaving the auto show, these male hooligans took off to Times Square and continued their blatant disregard for anything that’s decent.

The fracas resulted in four individuals getting shot – all of them weren’t seriously injured, thank God – and about thirty more people getting arrested.

We’re not ones to hinder people from having fun, but if it gets as out-of-hand like what happened here, we’d want to have these imbeciles put away before they cause any more harm to other folks.

Subaru was quite a busy brand at the New York Auto Show, showing off their sales figures for 2009 and proudly announcing that the brand has rebounded quite strongly from the global financial crisis of 2008. But while these are all fascinating to us, the real highlight of the Subaru press conference was the unveiling of the 2011 WRX STI , a car that we’ve been pining for release for quite some time now.

Subaru of America’s Director of Corporate Communications, Michael McHale and Executive Vice President and COO of Subaru of America Thomas Doll both took the stage to personally unveil the new 2011 Subaru WRX STI.

Most of the press conference will talk about the awesomeness that is Subaru so if you’d like to skip that part and head over straight to the reveal of the 2011 WRX STI, we suggest you fast forward to the 3:38 mark of the part 2 of the press conference where Mr. Doll himself gives us the rundown of the highly-anticipated car before pulling off the covers at the 7:45 mark.

If you think you’re eyes are deceiving you, they’re not.

First of all, we’ll set the record straight. That’s not a new Hummer since we already know that the brand is scheduled to ride off into the sunset pretty soon. What you’re looking at is actually a Mini , though there’s nothing ‘mini’ about that car.

To be more specific, that’s a Mini media shuttle that has been taking auto journalists to and from the New York Auto Show. Surprisingly, the car caused quite a stir because of its resemblance to a Hummer. But rest assured, the only thing Hummer-ish about this ride is the shape. The rest is all Mini – or as the emblazoned tag line appropriately says ‘Mini goes Maxi’.

Volkswagen Polo

The 2010 World Car Awards closed today at the 2010 New York Auto Show . Taking home the prestigious award for 2010 World Car of the Year was the Volkswagen Polo beating out the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Toyota Prius . Volkswagen took the majority vote of the 59 World Car jurors after they test drove the 30 entries from July 2009-January 2010. Walter de Silva, head of design Volkswagen Group, attributes this success to the Polo’s “uncomplicated, unique and timeless design plus its high efficiency”. This is Volkswagen’s second triumph in this category with the success of the Volkswagen Golf as last year’s World Car of the Year.

"We’re honored that the Volkswagen Polo was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors," said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. "After the great triumph of the Golf last year, we are delighted to repeat this success with the new Polo. These automobiles have reaped numerous awards, winning well-nigh every prize the automotive industry has to award. This shows Volkswagen is on the right track and is offering arguably the best range of products in its history."

Ford Edge

Okay, we have to admit that when we first heard of this award, we chuckled a bit to ourselves. Pet Safe Vehicle of the Year, really? No one ever really thinks about the safety of their pets when choosing their vehicle except for maybe Bark Buckle UP’s founder Pet Safety Lady, Christina Selter.

"Most people don’t think about it, but in only a 35 mph accident with a 60-pound pet it becomes a 2,700-pound projectile. This will injure the pet, passengers, driver or the pet may escape the vehicle and cause a second accident or become agitated and bite the first responder that is on scene doing their job," stated Selter.

With this in mind, Selter announced this year’s Pet Safe Vehicle of the Year, the Ford Edge . The award was accepted by Brett Burin, Ford Edge Marketing Manager.

"We look ahead with excitement this summer to the arrival of the new 2011 Edge, which adds even more revolutionary technology and class-leading performance. And with a suite of safety features, flexible seating and nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space, the Ford Edge is perfect for those traveling with pets," said Brett Burin, Ford Edge Marketing Manager.

We still think it is a little silly, but, hey, if it is grand enough to be done at the 2010 New York Auto Show then it has our attention and little Fido’s attention too.
