New York Auto Show

After numerous starts and stops, Alfa Romeo’s return to North America now has a definitive date. The Italian automaker has cirlced the 2014 New York International Auto Show as the date when it finally touches down (again) on American soil with the presentation of the Alfa Romeo 4C .

Sans the very-limited 8C action.

And outside of the NAIAS , you can make a case that the New York Auto Show is as big a stage for Alfa Romeo to introduce the 4C in the American market. So there’s a lot riding here for Alfa Romeo, particularly how well it’s going to be received by a new client base, a majority of which are probably young enough not to remember the last time the company was catering to this part of the world.

This bit of news, plus the recent proclamation by Alfa’s head of marketing Alberto Cavaggioni that a new update is in the cards for the 4C every year for the next four or five years, should make for tremendous interest in the 4C in the US.

The Subaru Outback has always been the Boy Scout of the car/wagon/crossover crew, with its standard AWD and rugged, foul-weather-defeating demeanor. While that demeanor won’t likely change, reports say the Outback is getting a Legacy -style work-over for the 2015 model year and will make its grand entrance at the 2014 New York Auto Show this spring.

Since the Outback is essentially the wagon version of the Legacy, it makes sense the recent changes to the 2015 Legacy would make their way over to the Outback. What this means for the Outback is a new exterior look with a similar reworked grille, headlights and raked windshield. The extra body cladding and plastic bits that make an Outback look like an Outback will surely make their return.

Inside, the same redesigned dashboard, instrument panel and center console with softer touch, more premium materials will be present. The coupe -like look of the new Legacy obviously won’t make the jump as cargo room and rear passenger headroom are bigger priorities in the Outback.

History tells us the powertrain offerings will be identical as well. The new Legacy offers two engine choices: a 2.5-liter flat-four making 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque and the 3.6-liter flat-six putting out 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately, both engines are stuck with CVT transmissions with no conventional manual on the horizon.

Updated 04/03/2014: Subaru has officially confirmed that the 2015 Outback will be officially unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show. With the occasion a first teaser image reveals that the new Outback will follow the steps of the more-recently unveiled Legacy sedan.

Updated 06/05/2014: Subaru today announced prices for the 2015 Outback which will arrive into dealerships this summer. Prices will range from $24,895 for the base 2.5i version to $32,995 for the 3.6R Limited version.

When the Kia Soul dropped onto the U.S. market in 2010 , hipsters everywhere saw Kia in a whole new light. This boxy compact car had all the tuning capabilities the Honda Civic had when it was a tuning phenomenon through the late 1990s and early 2000s, plus it had a catchy commercial with hip hop hamsters . All was well in the world of the Soul, and it’s about to get even more real with the preparation of the future-generation model.

Fresh off of its facelift in 2011 , the most sold model from Kia has just entered a new generation. The 2014 Kia Soul was unveiled at the 2013 New York Auto Show and will be put on sale in the third quarter of this year.

For the new generation, the Soul has switched to a new chassis, received a new design language inspired by the Track’ster concept and features significant suspension upgrades.

The launch of the revised 2014 Chevrolet Camaro also marked the return of the Z/28 nomenclature. The Z/28 name was initially used back in 1967 when a special Camaro was designed to compete in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am 2 class. Now, for the 2014 model year, the Z/28 nomenclature is applied to the most capable and fastest Camaro currently available on the market.

The new Camaro Z/28 was not built to compete in a specific race series, but it features track-focused capabilities. When compared to the ZL1, it is significantly lighter and, even though it is no more powerful, it is around three seconds faster around Chevy ’s testing track than the Camaro ZL1 . Also, as a tribute to the original Camaro Z/28, the new generation is only offered with a manual gearbox.

Updated 02/25/2014: Chevrolet unveiled a new video, explaining how the Performance Traction Management system helps the new Camaro Z/28 delivering faster laps on the race track.

Ford Mustang

Okay, if you are a car nut, still have a pulse and are not excited or worried about the next-generation Mustang , then you may want to recheck your label as a car nut... I am not a big Ford fan and even I am on edge the edge of my seat about it.

This is a bang-or-bust redesign for Ford’s resident muscle car , as it has the potential to be either the Mustang II debacle all over again or the Fox Body `Stang that swooped in to save the model’s life. There is an ongoing debate on when and where the new Mustang will debut, and all of them are somehow centered around the model’s 50th anniversary.

We have whittled the possible debut locations down two the three most likely ones, and our reasoning for picking these three.

The Ram truck has been around in some form or fashion since Dodge started making vehicles in 1914. The Ram as we know it today got its start when Dodge put the Ram name on the then-new 1981 full size truck. Of course, the biggest change happened in 2010 when Chrysler made Ram its own brand, pulling it from under the Dodge umbrella. Now called the Ram Truck brand, Ram has been making huge strides in truck development.

New for 2009 and refreshed again in 2013, the Ram 1500 is available in an almost limitless combination of cab, bed, engine, and options. Regular, Quad, and Crew cabs come with three bed lengths and three engine options that include the base 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, the venerable 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, and the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6.

The Ram 1500 also represents some out-of-the-box thinking in terms of packaging. A five-link rear suspension replaces the traditional leaf springs and an available air suspension gives the Ram a boost for off-roading and trailer towing. The Ram also sports an eight-speed automatic transmission sourced from ZF. The unit helps the 1500 get exceptional fuel economy while still affording it good payload and towing numbers. The truck is also available with the “Ram Ram Box,” a set of toolboxes mounted within the bed rails that will hold anything from trailer hitches to ice and drinks.

While it’s not expected that the Ram 1500 will overtake the Ford F-150 in terms of sales volume, it is expected the Ram will be chosen for its creature comforts and smart new diesel engine.

UPDATE 7/16/2014: Ram Trucks has just announced the entire Ram lineup will comply with the SAE’s J2807 towing standards. Ram joins Toyota and General Motors in adopting the new standards, though Ram is the only automaker to adopt J2807 in for Heavy Duty trucks.

As we all know, the Acura MDX model that we saw in Detroit was only a prototype that gave prospective buyers "a strong indication of the styling and design direction for the third generation." Well, now that the 2013 New York Auto Show is upon us, the 2014 MDX has officially been unveiled in full-production form.

In all honesty, the prototype and the production models are very similar, but Acura basically just toned down the extreme stuff. Things like the LED bars on the front and rear bumpers are nixed. Additionally, Acura gave the front skirt a more traditional look; as opposed to the futuristic treatment it received in the prototype. From the side, the prototype and the production models are nearly indistinguishable, as they both carry almost the identical profile and the rims are identical.

One thing that we’re sure every Acura fan has been waiting for is the revealing of the new model’s interior. And Acura delivered the goods today.

Updated 06/03/2014: Acura announced prices for the 2015 Acura MDX which went on sale today, June 3. Prices for the 2015 MDX will range from $42,565 for the base version and up to $56,780 for the MDX equipped with SH-AWD and Advance Package.
