Seemingly, everyone is getting into the world of limited supercar building lately. The latest supercar to hit the market hails from Belgium and is the brainchild of former racecar driver, Raphael van der Straten, and it is a wild one to say the least.

The all-new VDS GT 001 sits atop the basic platform of the Gillet Vertigo supercar, which gives it some rather impressive numbers and an oddly stout appearance. To boot, the production of this Belgium supercar is extremely limited, so you are likely in for a ride that will be worth some significant money in the near future.

So how well does this oddly proportioned supercar hold up in the ever-growing supercar realm and will its strange appearance be accepted in the real world?

Exterior

Okay, we’re not going to sugarcoat this; on the outside, the GT 001 is downright strange looking. Up front, there's a quad-headlight setup that is strangely reminiscent of the Mustangs from the early 1970s. Even the overall styling of the entire front fascia just screams “Mustang Mach 1.” At the base of the fascia, you get a massive front spoiler that is bound to add some serious down-force to the front end.

As you come over the hood, you’ll find two huge nostrils in the center, which are obviously for heat extraction and not air intake. The windshield is a piece of artwork, as its elegant curves sweep air over and to its sides, keeping the body very slippery. Its racing roots start showing through with its large single windshield wiper.

Proceeding over the roof and toward the rear end, the GT 001 has almost boat tails at the rear of the roofline. This again traces back to the racing genetics in the VDS GT 001. This boat tail is flanked by a pair of flat sections to let air pass over quickly. Not all of the air gets passed, however, as there is a vent on each rear quarter that channels air downward to the rear brakes.

If you thought the front end of the GT 001 was odd, you haven’t seen anything until you reach the back end. That boat-tail style roof rounds off and shoots inward between the two taillights, creating a cavern between the lights. On the underside of the rear end, you get a massive diffuser with a pair of center-exit exhaust pipes peeking out.

The side profile really gives you a great look of the entire body and it really shows that the odd design comes together very well. This supercar really takes the old and the new designs and mashes them together into one lump of carbon-fiber sexiness that is the GT 001.You may love it or hate it, but you cannot deny that it is unique and impressive. On top of all of this sexiness, the GT 001 weighs in at only 950 kg (2,095 lbs).

Interior

Unfortunately, there are no interior images or information available. We will get you the information as soon as VDS releases it.

Engine and Drivetrain

Just like its donor car, under the hood of the VDS GT 001 is a Maserati-sourced 4,244 cc (4.2-liter) V-8 that pumps out a stout 357 kW (480 horsepower). This powerful V-8 engine pumps all 480 ponies through a 6-speed sequential gearbox and to the rear wheels. Despite being the same engine size as the Gillet, the V DS’s 4.2-liter V-8 pumps out 48 kW (64 horsepower) more than the Gillet.

There’s no mention of 0-to-100 km/h (62 mph) times, but we would assume this car should be in the high-2-second range. We’ll get you the performance numbers once we receive them.

Suspension and Handling

Given the VDS GT 001 sits atop the underpinning of the Gillet->ke2173 Vertigo .5 Spirit, it is safe to assume that it carries the Gillet’s suspension system. This would give it a pair of superimposed wishbones up front with shocks and coil springs up front. On the rear, you get the same style of independent suspension as you do up front.

On the front corners, you get 330 mm (12.99-inch) ventilated rotors being squeezed by 6-piston AP calipers. On the rear, you get 300 mm (11.81-inch) vented rotors squeezed by the same 6-pot calipers. We would love to see larger rotors on this car – something closer to 14.5 inches would be best – but with a car this light, you could stop it easily with even 4-wheel mechanical drum brakes.

Suspension Specifications:

Front & Rear Suspension

Two superimposed wishbones w/ shocks and coil springs

Front brakes

Rear Brakes

Pricing and Availability

VDS has yet to publicly release a price on the GT 001 yet. We do, however, know that there will only be 22 models built and sold. This will ultimately make the VDS GT 001 one of the most rare sports cars in the world.

Competition

Until we get our hands on some pricing and performance information, we cannot compare it to any model fairly. We’ll update the review with this information ASAP.

Conclusion

Needless to say, we find this car completely awesome. Yeah, it’s a little funny looking, but much better looking than its donor Vertigo .5 Spirit, that’s for sure. It’s likely extremely fast to 60 mph (sub-3 seconds) and may reach speeds in excess of 220 mph. Unfortunately for us, VDS has not released any of the GT 001’s performance specs. There is also no price listed, which means that it is likely extremely expensive. We’ll update this review as more information becomes available.
