Peugeot's replacement for the ageing 406 has a striking grille and all over sleek look that some people love and others aren't so sure about. In a tough sector, the 406 was starting to show its age, so the brand new 407 has a bit of a task to convince buyers. Refined, with a suave yet dependable image, time will tell if this Peugeot can lead the pack.

The distinctive looks of the 407 make it more appealing to look at than key rivals from Ford and Vauxhall. The new saloon may have a smaller cabin than the old 406 and only an average-sized boot but the company hopes that will be less significant to potential owners than powerful engines and driver appeal. The rival for the Vectra and Mondeo has remarkable road-holding, although it is not the most involving drive. Some buyers may not like that gaping front grille but you can't deny it gives the Peugeot 407 a serious image boost. The 2.7-litre diesel model is borrowed from the Jaguar S-Type and is the star of the range.
