The 406 has now been replaced by the 407, a car whose agile chassis defies its bulk, and the SW version fills the void the 406 estate once occupied. The 'SW' badge declares that this model will be more of a 'Sports-Wagon' than a wardrobe on wheels, however. Peugeot claims that a full-on estate won't be included in the 407 line-up, due to the numbers of buyers moving away from conventional estates into MPVs like its 807.

The Peugeot 407 SW sits on the same wheelbase as the saloon, but its longer rear overhang contributes to longer overall dimensions. However, that extra span only converts to an extra 23 litres of boot space when filled up to the bottom of the windows. Folding the rear seats flat and filling the void from the backs of the front seats all the way to the roof line increases the capability to 1365 litres. This may seem a lot, but is rather an insignificant figure against the 406 Estate which could hold 1741 litres. But while the effective length of the SW's interior is 1730mm, the boot aperture narrows to a point at the top making the transport of large square objects such as washing machines tricky if not impossible.

The tailgate opens by hand, with the top glazed section able to be released independently. It can be unlocked with the keyfob, although it doesn't open or close electronically as with cars such as the Honda Accord Tourer. It enables you to load up the boot without opening the whole tailgate, which can prove tricky in multi-storey car parks. Failsafe measures are in place to prevent you from opening the main tailgate with the rear screen open - doing this would risk damaging the roof.
