With its «number» – the 205 – Peugeot started a movement which in fi fteen years became a genuine phenomenon. All over the world, the 205 epitomised the dreams of several generations of motoring enthusiasts.
Then, from 1998, the 206 «left its mark» with its three body styles – three and fi ve door hatchbacks, SW and CC – becoming the car of choice of more than 5,000,000 men and women.
For some the main car, for most a second car, the 206 became a «cult» car with a strong image. With its innovative architecture and user-friendliness, both a result of being designed around its occupants, the stylish 206 is pleasing to the eye with its unique profi le creating a naturally dynamic single-compartment vehicle. Modern, high performance engines Petrol versions come with three engines: 1.4 litre 54 kW (˜ 75 bhp), ˜ 1.4 litre 65 kW (˜ 90 bhp) and 1.6 litre 80 kW (˜ 110 bhp), soon to be supplemented by new high-tech engines, a result of the cooperation between PSA Peugeot Citroën and the BMW Group. The Diesel range features three HDi engines and a diesel particulate fi lter system (DPFS): 1.4 litre 50 kW (˜ 70 bhp), 1.6 litre 66 kW (˜ 90 bhp) and 80 kW (˜ 110 bhp). They share a liking for economy and driving pleasure, as well as respect for the environment, with CO2 emission values ranging from 120 g/km to 126 g/km.
Thanks to its power and a torque of 240 Nm (or 260 Nm with overboost activated), the 1.6 litre engine offers a level of performance close to that found in sports cars.... Choice of colours and trims Fourteen body colours, two interior ambiences in black or light beige, ten main fabrics, two leather trims, four instrument panel designs ... as well as many other features, allow the seven versions that make up the 207 range to express their personality in different ways... a rich and varied range.
The share of the small car segment in the European car market has grown from 31 to 33 % between 1998 and 2005 and is set to increase by the same amount over the next five years.
During the same period, thanks to the success of the 206, Peugeot has seen its car sales in the B segment increase by 85 %. Peugeot, however, intend to remain a key player in this segment and are responding by expanding their product range (107, 1007, 206 with the new 207) to meet the diverse requirements of motorists created by our ever changing society:
an increase in the number of people living alone,
an increase in the number of young, single people at work and living with their parents,
an increase in the number of active older citizens as a result of a lower retirement age,
an increase in the number of “extended” families,
the need for more than one car per household to cater for the independent activities of different family members.
Due to these changes, the purchase of a small car has now become a genuine choice, in response to an actual need, and no longer a choice by default. The wider range of cars available and the varied body styles reflects these changes.

Writing a new page of Peugeot’s history in the cult “2.” series The «2.» series has its origins in 1929, with the arrival of the 201. The «2» series has then gone on to leave its mark on the 20th century, with the 202, 203, 204, and then, in 1983, the 205, a «sacred number» that would be replicated 5,278,054 times in fifteen years, as a three and five door hatchback, CTi «cabriolet», GTi and the Turbo 16, a double winner in each of its sporting adventures in the World Rally Championship and the Paris-Dakar long-distance rally.
In its wake, the 206 continued the «saga» and since its launch in 1998 it has become the «most successful number of all»: three and five door hatchbacks with their innovative architecture, the elegant and practical SW, the Coupé Cabriolet and the WRC, triple champion in the world of rallying. With more than 5,300,000 examples already built, production of the 206 has now been extended to numerous production sites around the world, enabling the car to continue its fantastic career. It was recently unveiled in its «6th silhouette», the 206 sedan, which will begin its international career this year.
The car for a new generation, the 207 follows the 206 – not, however, as a replacement – but an alternative car with a strong and expressive character that promises to put the fun back into driving.
