pickup trucks

A pickup truck is a light truck with an open-top rear cargo area. Many pickups have short rigid sides and an opening rear gate, while others have a flat tray back.

Galpin Auto Sports has never been bashful about the programs it builds. It doesn’t have reason to because almost everything it rolls out is worthy of attention.

Take for example this one-off Ford F-150 SVT Raptor that was custom built for Pabst Blue Ribbon. This is the kind of work that has earned Galpin the reputation of a fantastic aftermarket company and the number it did on this SVT Raptor certainly attests to that.

Dressed in a Got To Have It Green custom paint, the SVT Raptor is the picture of a monster truck with equally monstrous performance credentials. The look, for one, is all about aggression, highlighted by a new custom black grille, a remote control electric tonneau cover, and a set of 18-inch Method Race 301 Matte Black wheels wrapped in 35-inch BFG Mud Terrain tires. There’s also a suspension-leveling kit that has altered the SVT Raptor’s stance. This is quite a package, right?

Adding to all that is an interior that includes two-tone green stitched suede seats, custom-wrapped suede headliner and pillars, a custom rear seat enclosure, a contrast stitched steering wheel, and painted door panel inserts, console and center dash.

As far as audio is concerned, Galpin installed a JL Audio 10W 3 Subwoofer and HD900/5 Amplifier, Focal 165KRX2 and 130 KR Components and a Rockford Fosgate 3.Sixty.3 Signal Processor, all of which have been put together to provide an incredible sound that will blow your ears away.

Under the hood of the Hulk-like SVT Raptor lies a 6.2-liter V-8 engine that now produces 600 horsepower. This power upgrade owes its thanks to a new Roush Supercharger and a Borla performance exhaust. That’s a massive spike from the 411 horsepower of the standard model.

Ford F-150

Now that Chevrolet has officially announced the 2014 Silverado , it is time for its biggest competitor - Ford F-150 to make the next move. New details suggest that Ford will in fact be offering a first concept version of the 2015 F-150 next month at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

The current generation F-150 is on sale ever since 2009 and received an updated version with new engines and a new look in 2011. However, do not expect the production version of the F-150 to arrive shortly after the concept - rumors suggest in fact that customers interested in the new generation pick-up will have to wait until late fall of 2014. That will offer the Ford model quite a disadvantage in front of its Silverado competitor set to go on sale in the second quarter of 2013.

The 2015 F-150 will be about 700 lbs lighter than the current generation and Ford has promised a fuel economy improved by 15 to 20%. The model will be offered with a new generation of V-6 engines, internally known as the "Nano" family, in the 2.7 to 2.9-liter displacement range.

Full details will be unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, stay tuned!

Holden Thunder Ute

Chevy fans who would wish to buy the Holden Commodore Ute with a Chevrolet Bowtie badge are in for a good surprise.

Via a little snooping by GM Authority, it has dug up that GM has renewed the "El Camino" and "Nomad" trademark for future branding. These names were last used in 1987 and 1972 respectively, where they served great for people looking for a robust, V-8 powered utility vehicle. With GM fighting with everything it has to keep it and Holden’s heads above water, it is no surprise that bringing back these two icons back to America, even if they are simply a case of swapping badges.

With Chevy teasing the anticipated Chevrolet SS, it doesn’t hurt assuming that Chevrolet will import the Commodore Ute and Commodore Sportwagon as its modern versions of its Chevy El Camino SS and Nomad SS. This makes even more sense since we are all but assured that the Chevrolet SS is nothing more than a badge-doctored Holden Commodore.

A spokesman for Holden in Australia said that the automaker has not taken a decision on further exports, but the free trade agreement between Australia and the U.S. has been renewed. With all the legal processes almost completed, Chevy may decide to announce the two. So, fingers crossed!

Keep in mind, however, GM teased us before with the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck concept, which was a Holden Commodore Ute in Pontiac garb. So this whole thing could mean absolutely nothing…

With the launch of the C7 Corvette and SS, and now the slim possibility of the El Camino and Nomad coming back, the future is starting to brighten up for Chevy. Hope that reflects in the sales figures as well.

The Ford Raptor is a truck that doesn’t need to do a lot to catch attention. Its mere presence alone usually does the trick.

Every so often, however, somebody decides that Raptor deserves a boost, and when this “somebody” happens to be Roush Performance, you know you’re bound to get something special. This latest program isn’t all to Roush’s credit, as Cooper Tire and Mickey Thompson, two companies that know a thing or two about fitting vehicles the size of the Raptor with a set of polished wheels and tires, had hands in it too.

For all the impressive characteristics of the Raptor, the one that really brought this program to a new level was Roush Performance’s new Phase 2 R2300 calibration supercharger kit. This upgrade gave the Raptor a staggering output of 590 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The horsepower output, in particular, is a sharp spike from the standard model’s 411 horsepower and Roush’s Phase 1 program, which netted 525 horsepower. The supercharger kit also includes a new 7 5mm supercharger pulley and Roush’s own PCM calibration. The kit was created through hours upon hours of research and testing that included it undergoing extreme environmental temperatures from -20 degrees F up to and through 120 degrees F. Roush went above and beyond by performing these tests at an altitude of 14,000 feet above sea level to ensure both quality and performance.

The price for the program has been set at $599 and comes with a 3-year or 36,000-mile warranty on the Roush parts only. Unfortunately, the program isn’t for sale or can’t be installed in California in large part because it’s not approved by the California Air Resources Board.

Back in 1978, Dodge rolled out a special edition package for its D150 pickup trucks, which were not yet named “Ram.” This new package was known internally as Package Code YH6 and featured a high-output 360-cubic-inch V-8 engine with a 4-barrel carb pumping in fuel. The engine boasted high-flow cylinder heads and an aggressive cam shave and it all hooked up to a 3.55-to-1 rear end. This package, which we all know as the L’il Red Express, only lasted two years – 1978 and 1979 – and saw only 2,188 units in 1978 and 5,118 units in 1979. This makes it one of the most sought after Dodge pickups ever built.

Well, Ram is rolling out a remake of this classic short-body pickup truck in the form of its SEMA -stationed L’il Red Express Truck. Though it is more modern than the original rendition, it certainly pays it homage rather well. It features the bright-red paint of the original, a side-stack exhaust system, and a wood-trimmed bed.

In addition, this remake of the cult classic pickup features 22-inch Mopar rims with gold inserts, a 5.7-liter HEMI engine that pumps out 390 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque, gold accent stripes, “Hyperblack” painted grille inserts, and a custom Katzkin (no, not “cat skin”) interior. Sure, it lacks the flare-side styling and the wood-outlined bed of the original, but it is bad-ass nonetheless.

There is no mention of this special edition ever coming to the Ram lineup, but don’t be too surprised to see it roll out in 2013 and 2014, as Chrysler loves running special-edition Rams – there have been plenty of them. One thing is for sure, it would definitely carry a higher premium than the $1,131 price for the original L’il Red Express package.

Stay tuned to find our of Chrysler plans to launch this model or not.

The whole point of an event like SEMA is to show the industry the latest and greatest in the aftermarket world. So it’s pretty much a given that you’re going to see some out-of-this world projects getting their timeshine at the event.

Toyota is taking this to heart this year with the presentation of a concept Tundra that will make fishing aficionados faint with envy. The Toyota Tundra Ultimate Fishing Concept is just that, the most ridiculous and geared up fishing-themed vehicle you’ll see on dry land.

With the help of pro angler Brett Meyers, Toyota went about building the vehicle to make it look like an actual Bass Pro Shop on wheels. There’s a storage system on the covered truck bed that pretty much has everything an angler will need for his fishing exploits. You name it: tackles, reels, rods, and even a refrigerator. Other features of the truck’s exterior include a custom-fabricated roof rack, Rigid Industries LED lighting and grille, custom fishing rod tubes, a 3M matte gray wrap, Bushwacker fender flares, and smoked exterior lighting.

Similarly, the interior of the Tundra Ultimate Fishing Concept also comes chalk full with gear you’ll need for your fishing expeditions. It’s got a multitude of screens that can display Navionics lake-mapping options. It’s got a center console that runs from the dashboard all the way back to the rear cabin wall. About the only thing missing is the rear bench seat, which was taken out to accommodate the two fishing buckets.

Best of all though is the performance upgrade given to the Tundra, one that was accomplished with the installation of a TRD supercharger system, as well as a new exhaust system. A 12" lift kit was also installed, increasing the car’s ride height by an effective foot, and last but certainly not least, it also received a new set of 20" Mud Grappler tires and improved brakes.

It’s not your everyday fishing vehicle, but it’s certainly something every angler would want to have at their disposal.

UPDATE 11/01/12: We all know that the Toyota Tundra Ultimate Fishing Concept is a vehicle unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Now, we get a better look at what makes it so after Toyota released a number of new photos of the concept truck. Check them all out in the gallery below!

Trucks aren’t exactly famous for their luxurious touches. Of course, we doubt that anyone looking to buy a pick-up is doing so to get Rolls-Royce type luxury, so that has never really mattered. Chris Ross feels a little different about this, as he has developed a new tuning package based on the Ford F-150 Raptor . With its 411 HP 6.2-liter V8 engine in tow, this pick-up truck has just received a Luxury Performance Raptor for the 2012 SEMA Auto Show.

The Ford F-150 was developed in cooperation with teams like Roush Performance, Fox Racing, and Meguiar, and takes the pick-up to an unexpected level of luxury. Roush is offering a Phase 2 ROUSHcharger kit that will increase the output to an impressive 590 hp and 535 lb.-ft. of torque.

In order to handle the extra power, the truck was also equipped with a new suspension kit and a new set of wheels sized 19" up front and 20" at the rear.

More details on this impressive kit will be unveiled during the 2012 SEMA Auto Show, so stay tuned!

Ford is reestablishing their tuning connection with K-Daddyz Kustomz with another rendition of the F-150 for the SEMA Auto Show. This tuning package really isn’t anything new considering this team put together the same package for the 2009 SEMA Auto Show , but hopefully we’ll be pleasantly surprised with new upgrades when the show doors open.

The Ford F-150 by K-Daddyz Kustomz is based on a 2013 Ford F-150 FX2 Sport Super Cab and features the same description as the tuning package from a few years ago: street influence with a touch of urban luxury. In art, that translates to a bright red monochromatic exterior paint finish with new 24-inch wheels and tires. The first details suggest that the model will also include a fully detailed undercarriage and a mind-blowing Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Under the hood, the tuner will keep the same 5.0 liter Ti-VCT V8 engine, but will add a supercharger that will most likely will help in increasing the standard output of 360 HP.

Tuning packages for muscle cars and sports cars are always fun to look at, but every once in awhile, we need a tuned up truck that will answer the needs of every off-roading truck lover in existence. Ford is answering that call with a line-up of updated F-Series pick-up trucks for the 2012 SEMA Auto Show.

The first truck is based on a Ford F-150 FX2 Sport Super Cab and has been developed in cooperation with Truckin’ Magazine. The tuner opted for a grey exterior paint finish with a custom stripe kit in order to provide the car with an aggressive look and feel. This very cool F-150 has also received a new set of wheels,as well as a lowered stance and a high-performance brake package. The interior was largely left alone except for a few luxury touches.

The Ford F-150 FX2 Sport Super Cab by Truckin Magazine is powered by the usual 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 engine, but at this point, we can’t say whether or not the engine has been privy to any engine boosts. That being said, the truck’s 365 HP should be more than enough for off-road adventures.

Chevrolet Silverado

Auto giant Chevrolet has announced that it will reveal its heavy duty pickup, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado , on December 13th before the auto-show debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Along with the reveal date, Chevy has also teased us with an image of the Silverado’s headlight.

Riding on the new K2 platform that is slated to underpin the next gen Cadillac Escalade, GMC Sierra and Yukon, and the Chevrolet Suburban, the Silverado will be evolutionary in terms of design. From the mule videos that were posted earlier, one can render how this hard-working beast might look. Looks apart, the interior is also said to be receiving an overhaul, with higher quality materials and better, luxurious upgrades in its infotainment systems.

The upcoming rig will be powered by the new small-block V8 engines that will power the whole heavy-duty lineup in GM, along with a V6 base-engine.
Other details will be posted once GM officially reveals the Silverado.

Overall, we think that the 2014 Silverado will take a leap forward in terms of refinement and technology, and prove that it’s a worthy pick over competition like the Ford F-250 and the Dodge Ram.

So, are you truck fans excited yet?
