2006 Pontiac GTO

  Review

pontiac gto

GTO - three legendary letters that started and defined a muscle car phenomenon in 1964. More than four decades later, the 2006 Pontiac GTO is the spiritual leader of modern muscle.

For the ’06 model year, the GTO is distinguished by revised taillamp styling. The taillamp background is now gloss black instead of red. Two new colors - Fusion Orange and Spice Red - offer none-too-subtle choices for customers who want their Goat to stand apart from the crowd. There is also a new 18-inch wheel design with bright spokes that further identifies the ’06 model.

As it was in the beginning, performance is at the heart of the Pontiac GTO. A 6.0-liter LS2 V-8 produces an impressive 400 horsepower (298 kw) and 400 lb.-ft. of torque (542 Nm). The Hydra-Matic 4L65-E four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is standard, while a six-speed Tremec T56 manual transmission is optional. The awesome powertrain is capable of propelling the GTO form 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and 13-second quarter mile times.

All that power is matched by the equally impressive stopping power from a four-wheel disc performance braking package featuring vented front rotors, solid rear rotors and bright red calipers with the GTO logo. A four-channel ABS system is standard.

i know for a fact that a 2004 gto with an lt1 and 6 speed tranny will do 140mph with no problem

nifty car, seem’s like a good buy for the family lol.

No problem.

thanks AK i went and test drove one today and was very impressed.. especially since the price tag was only 23k and it was fully loaded..

the acceleration throws you’re head in your seat the torque steer wasn’t bad at all bc of the limited slip differential.

overall i really liked the car alot. add a hood scoop. cold air intake and maybe swap the factory turbo for a greddy and i’ll be extremely happy smiley

Okay. 263 hp is very impressive for a front wheel drive car. Whats even more impressive is that this car’s fastest time was reported to be 5.4 seconds( official specs say 6to7) and it can run anwhere between 14 flat to 14.5 seconds, highly impressive considering that the WRX does the same. This car also has a great hatch design with a genuine leather interior and all the other features. That is also more than a 100hp/L which is more than many supercars can achieve nowadays. You can also do a lot of things with a front wheel drive car that you can never do on rear wheels or four wheels.

Iam unfortunately, ignorant of the engine but a hood scope will improve the output. Its a well known fact that the 3 series are practical for daily drivers.

But believe me, a 260+hp FF layered car is nothing to laugh at.

Mazda 3 .... If you have seen the other cars in the price range, then I think the Mazdaspeed 3 will be the best choice. How much does it go for in the US? and what are the other cars in this pricerange?

AK whats you’re opinion on the new mazdaspeed 3... i’ve been considering it as a cheap car that i can mess around with and put some aftermarket on while keeping it as a decent daily driver...

and also since the intercooler is top mounted on the engine it’d make sense to add an aftermarket functional hood scoop to increase a little power right? or would it be worth the money

I know that but the point here is that this car goes around for somewhere near the same price as an EVO or a WRX. Now you could have this delivering 600hp which will be just enough to stop you from being busted by emissions laws in most countries. On the other hand you could have a WRX or an EVO delivering 400hp and it will beat the 600hp GTO anyday in any condition, the 0to60, 1/4 mile or a track race.

i wouldn’t try racing this against a quality 4 cylinder b/c this isn’t what you’d call a quality v-8... its actually one of the cheapest v-8s in a car out there... the definition of a quality v-8 would be a vette either standard or a Z06
Posted on 05.4.2008

Oh and my WRX runs the 1/4 mile in 11’s, with only 310hp on a 2.2L engine. This car is a great value for money but don’t try racing it against a quality four cylinder.

RodFPV your muscle cars have high displacements and the Japanese use turbos so don’t go about using the turbo arguement. And making money the issue here won’t be a fair arguement. If you really wanna race, put 400hp in a 2L EVO, and put it against your 6L 400hp V8 GTO. True the modifications wil cost money but than at the end of the year calculate the fuel cost, Sherlock and see which car is more profitable.

well if you think bout it, you can get one for like 21-27 grand, put a thousand in it and your talking some serious power right there
Posted on 05.4.2008

regardless of the handling and such. 4.6 0-60 is quite impressive for a car that is just over 30grand

5217 and JESSE. Why dont you go and screw each other. People buy imports bacause not all of them are idiots, they know what japanese cars can do. Factory tuned cars made by the japanese can safely smoke hard tuned american cars. American cars have V8’s delivering often impressive horsepower but they take 0to60 like pregnant women.American cars are not only unable to compete in terms of speed but they also fail in terms of safety which are readily available in japanese cars.

the pontiac gto is great. i wont argue with that. however the people badmouthing the japanese cars, use your freaking brains. the japanese use turbos and such for good reason. they are not idiots. the gto looks great but most muscle cars say ’all brawn no brain’ and people who like these cars will probably not understand the reasons.

the turbo little japanese cars you speak of dont even compare to the GTO seriously there are like 3 japanese cars that can outrun a GTO and all 3 are above it in the price range. the lancer evo... the subaru wrx sti and the nissan gtr... all three over the price of the GTO and all turbocharged intercooled and such... well the gtr is well over the gto price.. .around 65 to 70 thousand and the horsepower isn’t much more .. the other two are just faster bc of all wheel drive... so yea buy a gto and put a supercharger on it and see who wins...

hands down american muscle

I am owner of 2006 GTO with a 6-speed transmission. About the speed of 175 mph, myself I will never go that fast but I do know at 110 - 120 mph the engine is only turning about 2800 rpm. The handling, it drives like riding on rail if a Mustang handles better, that is bad ride. The braking, I am sure it is room for improvement but when I run up on another car that is only going 60 to 65 and I am doing 100 plus the brakes slow me down. So if you are an auto lover, you know anything car that produces 400 horse power and 400 pound torque off the self is a car that must be respected. Let see what the aftermarket puts out. Thanks for your time.
