The G5, available in base and GT models, carries progressive Pontiac styling, with its twin-port grille, clean lines, white-faced sport gauges and standard rear spoiler. Built on GM’s global small car platform, both models are powered by GM Powertrain’s Ecotec premium four-cylinder engines. The base model features a standard Ecotec 2.2L I-4 that produces 148 horsepower (110 kW) and 152 lb.-ft. of torque (206 Nm). The peppier GT produces 173 horsepower (129 kW) and 163 lb.-ft. of torque (221 Nm)* with its standard Ecotec 2.4L I-4 with variable valve timing.

The G5 is equipped with standard Getrag F23 five-speed manual transmission, known for smooth shifting, or customers may opt for the convenience of the 4T45 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The 4T45 uses the new Dexron VI fluid and is “filled for life,” meaning there is no scheduled maintenance required for the transmission under normal operating conditions.

Dynamic driving experience

The G5 is designed to deliver a dynamic driving experience for which Pontiacs are known. The vehicle uses a MacPherson strut-type front suspension, semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars for more exact body roll control. Suspension tuning for each model, including steering feel, spring rate and stabilizer bar diameter, is dialed in to provide distinct driving and handling characteristics. Two suspension settings are available:

  • FE1 suspension – standard on the base model, it provides a smooth ride and includes a 19-mm front stabilizer bar and a 16-mm rear stabilizer bar
  • FE3 suspension – standard on GT, it delivers a firmer, more direct ride and includes 22-mm front and rear stabilizer bars, four-wheel disc brakes, monotube shocks and 17-inch wheels and performance tires

The G5’s strut-type front suspension is compact yet provides long wheel travel, with 90 mm of compression travel and 87 mm of rebound, which is substantially more than most competitors and enhances overall ride and handling. Monotube rear shocks are used for a more precise road feel. L-shaped front control arms contain a forward pivot bushing, which transmits most of the cornering force, and a larger, high-damped composite rear elastomeric bushing that allows rearward movement to minimize harshness from road surface impacts.

The direct-acting front stabilizer bar connects to each strut for precise steering response and improved cornering agility with decreased body roll. All front suspension components are mounted to a new, rigid cradle assembly comprised of four large hydroformed steel tubes and two side members that are integrally welded to front and rear cross members. The cradle is mounted to the G5’s space frame at four widely spaced points.

The G5’s torsion beam rear suspension provides excellent ride and handling, while maximizing interior space. A hydraulic rear suspension bushing is employed on the FE1 suspension to improve the ride and suppress road noise. Rear wheel travel, at 126.5 mm in jounce and 68.5 mm in rebound, is longer than most vehicles in the segment.

Engine specifics

The base model G5 is powered by a 148 horsepower Ecotec 2.2L I-4 while a 173 horsepower Ecotec 2.4L I-4 is standard on the GT. Although each Ecotec engine has distinct hardware differences and performance characteristics, all share the Ecotec family’s solid basic architecture and all-aluminum construction with:

  • Dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder
  • Twin counter-rotating balance shafts
  • Low-friction, roller-finger follower valvetrain with hydraulic lash adjusters
  • Zero-maintenance chain camshaft drive
  • Extremely compact dimensions and low mass
  • Direct mounting of all accessories to the engine structure to eliminate common sources of noise, vibration and harshness
  • Full circle transmission attachment is more rigid than most four-cylinder powertrains for reduced noise and vibration
  • GM Oil Life System for optimum oil change frequency
  • No routine maintenance apart from oil/oil filter changes
  • Catalyst located close to the exhaust manifold to speed catalyst “light-off” and reduce hydrocarbon emissions
  • Innovative cast-in oil filter housing eliminates crawling under the car to perform oil changes. The design also eliminates throwaway oil-filter “cans” that retain used oil that typically ends up in landfills

History

The Pontiac G5 (United States & Canada) / G4 (Mexico) is a compact car introduced by Pontiac in 2004 for the 2005 model year. For 2005 and early 2006, this car was known as the Pontiac Pursuit in the Canadian market, and G5 Pursuit from 2006.5. It was released to the U.S. market in August 2006 as a 2007 model.

The G5 is based upon the GM Delta platform along with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Saturn ION, and European Opel Astra. The vehicle is only available as a coupe. There is also a sedan version sold in Canada and Mexico.

2005 Pontiac G5 (Pursuit)

The 2005 G5 offers sporty performance with two race-inspired Ecotec four-cylinder engines and two responsive transmissions. A 140-horsepower (104-kw), Ecotec 2.2L engine is standard on base and SE Sport models. The 2.2L dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine features aluminum block and cylinder heads, counter rotating balance shafts, roller-finger follower valve lifters, chain-driven camshafts, electronic throttle control, coil-on-plug ignition, GM Oil Life System and extended-life spark plugs and coolant.

Mated to the Ecotec 2.2L engine in the G5 is a standard Getrag five-speed manual and available Hydra-Matic 4T45-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The compact and efficient five-speed manual features five synchronized forward gears and a synchronized reverse gear. The 4T45-E is engineered to deliver transparent shifts in a quiet and durable package.

2006 Pontiac G5

The 2006 G5 offers the same sporty performance as the 2005 modes with two race-inspired Ecotec four-cylinder engines and two responsive transmissions. The power is increades to 145-horsepower (108-kw), Ecotec 2.2L engine is standard on base and SE Sport models, and a 171 horsepower (128-kw), Ecotec 2.4L engine is standard on the GT.

The 2.2L dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine features aluminum block and cylinder heads, counter rotating balance shafts, roller-finger follower valve lifters, chain-driven camshafts, electronic throttle control, coil-on-plug ignition, GM Oil Life System and extended-life spark plugs and coolant.

Mated to the Ecotec 2.2L engine in the G5 Pursuit is a standard Getrag five-speed manual and available Hydra-Matic 4T45-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The compact and efficient five-speed manual features five synchronized forward gears and a synchronized reverse gear. The 4T45-E is engineered to deliver transparent shifts in a quiet and durable package.
