Special edition Porsche 911 Carreras don’t come out often and when they do, it’s almost a certainty that people will tussle for the chance to own one. So here it is, Porsche lovers, now’s the time to punch your ticket to a 911 Carrera battle royale of epic proportions. Brumos Porsche, a Porsche dealer from Jacksonville, Florida, has released the exclusive and factory-authorized Porsche 911 Carrera GTS B59 Edition Coupe. Only five of these bad boys have been made so consider yourself extremely lucky if you get the opportunity to own one. The cars were commissioned as a tribute to Hurley Haywood, the man who won the Daytona 24 Hours five times for Porsche, four times in the 70s and one in the 90s. The special edition 911 Carrera GTS comes full of special edition goodies that justifies its rarity, including a special paint job and Porsche’s own Sport Chrono Package Plus. "Our special B59 Edition project is nearing completion and soon the driving fun will begin," said Ray Shaffer, Brumos Porsche General Manager. "It is an honor and a pleasure to be involved so closely with the Porsche factory in Germany and here in the States during the creation of these special 911s." Granted, these five cars won’t come cheap and it’s more than likely that you’re going to have to fight someone to be the one of the five lucky people to score a model. FifthGear went to the Assen TT circuit in the Netherlands and put together two of the most incredible sports cars to date - the Lotus Evora S and the Porsche Carrera S - for a little one on one action. The Lotus Evora S is powered by a supercharged Toyota-sourced 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers a total of 350 HP and more than 300 lb-ft of torque. This means a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 172mph. On the other hand, the Porsche Carrera S is powered by a 3.8-liter power with an output of 385 HP and a top speed of 186 mph. The latest addition to the Porsche 911 line-up is the Carrera 4 GTS - the top end version of the Carrera models that combines the Carrera GTS technology with an all-wheel drive twin. The new model will be put on sale in July with prices for Germany starting from 111,956 euro (about $160,000 at the current rates) for the coupe and 122,071 euro (about $175,000 at the current rates) for the convertible version. Prices for the US market will be announced at a later date. The new Porsche Carrera 4 GTS is powered by a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine, which is the same engine used in the Carrera S. The only difference in the engine is that it pushes out an additional 23 HP, getting the total number up to 408 HP. With this output and with the intelligent, all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM), the new 4 GTS will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds for the coupe version and in 4.8 seconds for the cabriolet. The electric car bandwagon is sure filling up these days with automakers from Chevrolet all the way to Porsche, and many in between, coming up with plans to produce or further market their electric vehicles. Now even tuning firms are following in the automakers’ footsteps as RUF, a German tuner, is preparing no less than ten electric sports car based on the Porsche 911. These 10 models will be manufactured in cooperation with Siemens AG and will be presented in the first half of 2011. The first of the 10 electric models is called the Single Motor Concept and is based on a 997 Carrera. It is powered by a 180 KW electric motor that takes its power from lithium-ion batteries with an energy capacity of 29 kWh. The electric motor has a driving range of approximately 150 km (93 miles) and a maximum speed of about 136 mph. The sprint from 0-62mph takes about 7 seconds. The second electric RUF vehicle is the Twin Motor Concept with 2-speed Gearbox. It features two transversely mounted Siemens synchronous electric motors producing 250 kW (335hp) with double inverters and an automatic 2 speed gearbox with limited slip differential. This model has an autonomy of 200 kilometers (124 miles) and can hit a top speed of 136 mph. The third concept we have details on is the Twin Motor Concept with Torque Vectoring. This concept features the same two transversely mounted Siemens synchronous electric motors with double inverters as before, but gets two separate angular bevel gearboxes for independent rear wheel drive as well. It can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about 5 seconds, while top speed is 111 mph. 2012 Porsche Carrera Black Edition
Porsche is currently working its automotive fingers to the bone designing the future generation 911, but it seems as if they mustered just enough strength and time to bring out a special edition model to pacify the crowd until we all get to see the new 911 on the market. This new special edition is based on both the coupe and cabrio versions of the 911 Carrera and will be limited to only 1,911 units. The U.S. will see prices ranging from $81,300 to $85,320 for the Coupe and $91,300 to $95,320 for the Cabriolet. Sales will begin in April 2011. As its name suggests, the Carrera Black Edition comes painted in black, plain as standard or basalt black metallic as an option. This blackout continues for the convertible’s top and for the interiors of both versions. This special edition is based on a standard Carrera, with 345 HP under the bonnet and will be offered with the same technical special equipment options that are offered on the Carrera models. Being that Porsche has successfully created the most powerful street-legal model Porsche has ever built in the form of the GT2 RS, the guys over at AutoCar decided to put this beast to the test alongside one of its more standard brothers: the Carrera. To figure out that the GT2 RS is faster and more powerful than the Carrera is a no brainer. It pushes out 620hp, and pushes it out quickly with a 0-60mph time of just 3.5 seconds. Stand that next to the Carrera’s 345hp and 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds, and you begin to question why the heck this comparison was even done. But there is actually a reason behind this seemingly simple comparison. Sure, the GT2 RS is faster, but is it fast enough and powerful enough to substantiate the gargantuan price difference of $100,000 between it and the Carrera? Check out the video and find out! The new Porsche Carrera GTS is no doubt a car for serious racers, so what does a five-time American Le Mans Series champion think of it? During the Carrera GTS’ press launch down in Palm Springs, Florida, Joerg Bergmeister was asked to hop into the sports car and take it for a little test driving fun. Not only does the champion tell us what he thinks about the car, he even goes as far as comparing it to his very own 911 Carrera S and Flying Lizard 911 GT3 RSR car. The new Carerra GTS is powered by a 3.8-liter flat engine delivering 408 HP and 420 NM of torque. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in 4.2 seconds for a GTS Coupe with PDK and a Sport Chrono Package Plus in Sport Plus mode, and the top speed goes up to 190 mph. The entire Porsche establishment in Stuttgart are mourning the death of legendary racer and Porsche brand ambassador, Paul Ernst Strähle. He was one of the most successful and best-known racing drivers during the 1950s and 60s. Strähle died of natural causes last Wednesday at the age of 83 in Schorndorf, his place of birth. Wolfgang Dürheimer, Executive Vice President for Research and Development at Porsche, paid tribute to the deceased racing driver: “Paul Ernst Strähle was one of the most important and most versatile motorsport pioneers in post-war Germany. Through his success in numerous international races, he became a leading ambassador for German autosport. Porsche has lost a long-standing friend and companion who actively supported the company and particularly our motor sports department from its beginnings up to the present day.” Paul Ernst Strähle was the son of the Swabian aviation moghul Paul Strähle. After the end of the Second World War, he successfully completed a mechanical apprenticeship in his parents’ car and motorcycle business which he then built up into a successful Volkswagen and Porsche dealership a few years after. Jamiroquai is a British jazz funk and acid jazz band formed in 1992 that just so happens to have a car-loving fanatic as a lead singer. Jay Kay is the proud owner of many luxury rides including a Lamborghini Miura SV, an Aston Martin DBS, and a Ferrari Enzo, to name a few. This little hobby is why their latest, and appropriately named "White Knuckle Ride" video taken from the new album, "Rock Dust Light Star" features a Porsche 911 Carrera RS and a Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter. The chance to see a video of a Carrera RS and a helicopter is enough to give this one a go, but adding a chase scene that takes the machines through the dry scenery of Spain is more than enough to hit play right now. Porsche Asia have quietly announced the launch of a limited edition Carrera Cup model – with just 30 units on offer exclusively for the growing Chinese market. Like most special Porsches, the limited Carrera Cup Asia, makes absolutely no effort in hiding its performance heritage or close relationship to the race track. The available color schemes further emphasize this point – Guard Red, Carrera White, and black all come with in-your-face Porsche Racing decals and painted, lightweight 19” wheels. Let’s just say you’ll never mistake it in traffic or on the track for that matter. Power is the same as the “normal” Carrera S at 385HP and 420Nm whilst the 0-100km/h sprint time is improved to 4.3 secs (from 4.6) due to more clever shedding of weight without compromising on comfort. They are only available with the 7 speed PDK transmission though – a bummer if you’re a serious driver wanting total control, but don’t let that deter you one bit as it’ll still hit 300km/h. This is still a Porsche and a drivers’ one at that. Inside you’ll find special alcantara Recaro seats that are bespoke to the car, with the option of carbon fiber backrests for that racy feel - not that they’re necessary. There are red signatures spread throughout the cabin that stir the blood, of which our favorite being the illuminated Carrera S logo housed in the carbon fiber door sill. Who wouldn’t want to spend all their time in here?! The limited edition plaque on the inside completes the unique experience: “whoever drives this car is amongst the winners” You can be certain of that! Remember, you saw it here first!
