Porsche GT3

  There is always one version of the factory built Porsche 911 that stands head and shoulders above the rest of its backwards engineered brethren. The 911 GT3 is the choice of seasoned racers with a high revving naturally aspirated flat six and a track tuned suspension. The GT3 offers true race car performance in a street vehicle.


During a recent trip to a Miami-area Porsche dealership, TopSpeed founder Philippe Daix found himself face to face with five 911 GT3s as they patiently await an engine swap. Porsche is reportedly testing a revised version of the GT3’s 3.8-liter, flat-six engine, but until the engine is ready and shipped to dealers, these brand-new cars sit covered in a layer of dust, blocked by other vehicles within the bowels of the dealer’s service department.

Porsche made the unprecedented move in February of notifying owners to stop driving their GT3s and ordered dealers to stop selling them until repairs are made. The announcement came after two seemingly perfect GT3s burst into flames as they meandered down European roads earlier this year.

The German automaker’s investigation into the fires revealed two piston rod screws became loose, causing all sorts of mayhem and catastrophe within the engine block. Thankfully, no accidents or injuries resulted from the fires, but the incidents were enough for Porsche to recall all 785 of the 2014 911 GT3 s produces. Until the cars are fixed, current GT3 owners have replacement Porsche vehicles.

Engine problems stemming from two incidents of Porsche GT3 models burning in Switzerland and Italy has Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller possibly pulling back on the planned deliveries of the 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS . Apparently, Porsche wants to cover all its bases to ensure that the engine is working perfectly before committing to any launch dates.

Mueller made hints that the company is looking to delay the launch of the 911 GT3 RS in a conversation with Auto Motor und Sport. He didn’t give out a specific date as to when the launch is going to happen, although he did make it clear that it won’t happen until the company is sure that the engine has no more problems.

Mueller placed the blame on two screws coming loose in the engine as the reason for the fire, causing Porsche to recall 785 911 GT3 models that are already in dealerships.

"The problem was, in the broadest sense, an engine problem," Mueller told Auto Motor und Sport.

"We now know why this happened, and now [we’re] working out measures to prevent this in the future."

It’s a smart move by Porsche, and one that it has every reason of doing. It’d be a shame if the 911 GT3 RS — a car that’s high in the wishlist of a lot of Porsche fans — falls flat on its face when it hits the road.

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the roasting Porsche GT3 debacle unfolding over the last month or so with little information to go on. However, Porsche has unofficially announced the findings from its investigation and the company’s apparent remedy to the conundrum. Porsche will be replacing every 2014 GT3’s 3.8-liter engine.

A GT3 owner posted a letter from Porsche on an owner forum explaining the issue and Porsche’s plan to rectify it. According to the letter, damage is caused by “loosened piston rod screw connection which damaged the crankcase,” in the case of at least two GT3s. The letter continues saying a new screw connection is currently being tested.

In our estimation from the statement above, the 3.8-liter flax six threw a rod that damaged the crankcase and resulted in a fire. Perhaps shrapnel from the exploding block ripped through a fuel line, resulting in the blaze seen in the picture above.

When Porsche concludes the updated hardware will work, “we will be installing new engines with optimized piston rod screw connections in all 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 vehicles.” The letter goes on to say the Porsche will begin scheduling services and owners will be getting more information within the next three weeks.

Things aren’t looking so hot for Porsche 911 GT3 owners as they wait to hear news from Stuttgart regarding the fire hazard plaguing their car’s engine bays. As you may remember, five GT3s inexplicably burst into flames as they meandered down the road. With those reports coming into Porsche HQ, the company ordered a stop-sale and requested all GT3s be parked until engineers could fix the problem.

Well, that was in early February. Now a month later, Porsche is still looking for a cause. Hungry buyers in Australia were left disappointed after the 911 GT3 missed its own official Down Under debut this week, set to be along side the 911 Turbo and Turbo S models.

Porsche spokesman Paul Ellis says there’s “no update from the factory,” in an interview with Drive. "Given the high performance nature of the engine and sophisticated componentry and engineering, it’s a situation where you have to evaluate every situation to the minute level to make sure you don’t miss anything,"

Ellis continued saying the engineers have strong suspicions about what’s causing the fires, but need further evidence. Unfortunately, that process will likely take more time. Also a factor is correctly fixing the issue once it’s identified. “(It) depends on what the remedy is; if it is an electronic software issue then it is much easier to implement than a mechanical component of the engine.”

Drive is reporting Porsche says it’s seen no loss of customer loyalty or support for the brand during this time. What’s more, all the potential GT3 customers still have their names on the waiting list.

Porsche 911 GT3

Porsche has now issued a recall for all 2014 911 GT3 sports cars due to the risk of fire. We reported last week that Porsche issued at stop sale on all GT3s pending the automaker’s investigation. At that time, five vehicles had already caught fire with seemingly no warning or reason. Thankfully, no injuries or traffic accidents were associated with the roasting Porsches.

Porsche is currently contacting all 785 worldwide owners with recommendations to stop using their GT3 until the problem is sorted out. The company is offering to pick up the vehicles for delivery to a dealer for inspection and possible service. Porsche is still unsure of what’s causing the fires, but know the fires are originating with the 3.8-liter, flat-six engine.

With at least one of the incidents, the owner reported a loss of oil pressure followed by unusual noises and smells, followed then by smoke before the rear-engine sports car engulfed itself in flames.

If you happen to be the proud owner of a 991 generation Porsche 911 GT3 , don’t go anywhere near it. There have been a few reports of the car suddenly bursting into flames, and now it seems that Porsche has put a Stop Sale on the model.

Now most of this information is not confirmed, but the Axis of Oversteer team has one hell of a record behind it.

The latest GT3 in question was spending some on the road, as most cars do, when the owner noticed the low oil pressure warning. Then noises, smells and finally smoke. The 911 then proceeded to burst into flames and was destroyed.

This is the 5th incident of self-immolating GT3s in Europe and AoO is reporting a full dealer stop-sale for the time being. Now, the stop sale is not officially confirmed, and Porsche has yet to issue any kind of recall, but we are keeping our ears open.

Chris Harris and the Drive crew are at is again, and this time, they are pitting the Porsche GT3 , Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series against each other. I’d gladly take either of the three, but Chris got to push each one on a racetrack to see which one he preferred — poor guy...

The clip starts off with the Drive boys deciding which car each one gets to drive to the racetrack. Chris, of course, pulled his "power" card and decided to drive the Aston Martin . Judging by the windy mountain road that they had to travel, it is no surprise he picked the most luxurious car of the bunch — not that the Aston Martin isn’t quite the sports car too.

Once the boys got to the track and started their tests, the rain came and Harris got the chance to get some serious tail wagging going on. Again, poor dude...

Now that Porsche has revealed the full line of specifications for the new generation 911 family, creative types are busying themselves with the different variations up the brand’s sleeve. We just revealed our thoughts on the next gen 911 Turbo and then we found PS-Garage’s take on the future GT3 RS .

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the perfect sports car for those looking for true racetrack performance in a street car. The RS version will be the next logical step after the new 911 GT3 is revealed sometime in 2013, and while the new standard GT3 will deliver somewhere in the neighborhood of 480 HP, the RS version will be working with about an 20 HP. Unlike other 911 models, the GT3 RS will be offered exclusively with Porsche’s new seven-speed manual gearbox.

The new GT3 RS will bring in some of the usual upgrades such as an improved suspension, better aerodynamics, and an extra-large carbon-fiber rear wing serving as a reminder of its racing connections.

Updated 02/20/2014: British magazine AutoCar reports that the new generation 911 GT3 RS will be powered by a naturally aspired engine with an output of at least 500 horsepower. With this amazing output the GT3 RS should go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 or 3.3 seconds and up to a top speed of 196 mph.

The Porsche 997 GT3 may have already been replaced by a slew of newer models, including the current generation 991 GT3 , but sports cars like this are the rare kind that really lasts the test of time.

That’s why a tuning company like Cam Shaft went out of its way to give the sports car quite an aftermarket program. You might notice that this 997 GT3 is wearing a pretty snazzy livery. Look closer and you’ll realize that Cam Shaft, no stranger to fancy dress-ups, gave the German sports car an individually customized Martini Racing design on top of the Pearly White full-scale foil. The Martini Racing livery is the real head-turner here, complete with all the trimmings, lines and even the iconic Mattes logo on the hood and doors.

Availing of this design will cost you &euro2,400 for the Pearl White finish and &euro900 for the Martini livery. It’s not exactly cheap, but ultimately, it should be worth the investment if you have the finances to do so.

But the Martini Racing dress-up isn’t the only thing that makes this program stand out. Cam Shaft also gave the car’s engine a little tweaking of its own, courtesy of its in-house PP performance engine optimization program. With this &euro1,899 modification, Cam Shaft was able to increase the 997 GT3’s output to 435 horsepower, 20 ponies more than the standard output.

It still falls short of the current 475-horsepower output of the current 991 GT3 , but it’s still a nice bump in our opinion.
