Page 1 : Porsche 911 Turbo Page 2 : Engine and performances Page 3 : Chassis and Safety Page 3 : Specifications Page 3 : Prices Page 3 : Competitors and press reviews It was at the 1974 Paris Motor Show when the German sports car maker Porsche unveiled a turbocharged version of the classic 911 for the first time when they pulled the covers back off of a 3.0 Liter Porsche 930 Turbo, a model which at the time amazed audiences with its 260 HP maximum output and the ability to reach a 155 MPH top speed. In 2009 the 911 Turbo entered its seventh generation, with considerable performance improvements resulting in a Carrera Turbo that is almost twice as powerful as the original. Even if the design has changed, the new Turbo remains unmistakably a 911, with a sporty focus on the driving essentials. The outer air intakes on the front apron now come with titanium colored slats. Sitting low to their left and right are the new daytime running lights in the same manner as the LED indicators and safety is even further enhanced with the optional dynamic cornering light function while the side mirrors have been revised for a better rearward visibility. At the rear of the new Turbo, the Porsche wears a new set of distinctive LED taillights that have a tapered design and extend deep into the contours of the rear fascia. The fast response LED brake lights underline the car’s purposeful look and enhance active safety by offering more warning to traffic approaching from the rear. As with the outgoing 2006 Turbo model, the flat six cylinder engine features a pair of snails with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG), but the new unit’s displacement has been increased to 3.8 Liters and now develops 500 HP and as much as 516 lb-ft of torque with the Sport Chrono Package. This allows the new 91 Turbo to sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in only 3.4 seconds and reach a 194 MPH top speed when it goes on sale in the U.S. on January 30 with the coupe being priced at $132,800 and $143,800 for the cabriolet. Press release after the jump. Press release Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is proudly presenting a new top model at the pinnacle of its broad range of production sports cars: The new Porsche 911 Turbo combines far-reaching innovations in technology with fine tuning and supreme refinement in design. All key features of this high-performance sports car have been significantly improved, the new 911 Turbo combining a substantial improvement in fuel efficiency and lower weight with more power, even higher speed, and enhanced driving dynamics. The heart and highlight of the seventh generation of the Turbo is the new power unit displacing 3.8 litres and delivering maximum output of 500 bhp (368 kW). The first entirely new engine in the 35-year-history of the Turbo comes with features such as Direct Fuel Injection and Porsche’s exclusive turbocharger with variable turbine geometry on a gasoline power unit. And as an option, the new six-cylinder may be combined for the first time with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (Double-Clutch Gearbox). The Turbo driver of the future will also enjoy a further improvement in driving dynamics, detailed enhancement of PTM fully controlled all-wheel drive and PSM Porsche Stability Management being further supported by new PTV Porsche Torque Vectoring available as an option. This makes the car even more agile and precise in its steering for an even higher level of driving pleasure. ExteriorA characteristic feature of the most powerful production 911 is the front apron with large cooling air intakes and bar-shaped LED direction indicators. New features are the titaniumcoloured louvers in the side air intakes and LED daytime driving lights replacing the conven - tional foglamps. Available for the first time as an option on the new 911 Turbo, dynamic bending lights improve illumination of bends in the road ahead by the headlight module following the course of the road by swivelling in their angle up to 15o. Indeed, the sophisticated design of this doublelens projection system bears out the progressive and striking character of the new 911 Turbo most convincingly. In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo both the paddle and the PDK steering wheel come with push buttons and integrated displays. As a function of the button pressed, either the “Sport” or the “Sport Plus” light will switch on. And if the driver has acti - vated Launch Control, this function is also shown. InteriorThe interior combines impressive design with carefully thought-out technology to provide even more of the sporting style you’d expect from the 911 Turbo. Efficient ergonomics are also used to the best advantage. All models come with 8 way power seats as standard featuring full electric adjustment of fore/aft position, height, backrest and seat cushion angle, as well as lumbar support. Comfort is assured thanks to excellent lateral support and greater headroom. Available as a no-cost option, the manually adjustable sport seats have firmer upholstery. Other options include adaptive sport seats or sport bucket seats. The new 911 models are equipped as standard with PCM. The central control system for all audio, navigation and communication functions, PCM is powerful, versatile and easy to use. The key feature of PCM is the 6.5-inch touchscreen display offering intuitive access to all functions. With the standard navigation module, it enables easy destination input as well as fast access to points of interest (POIs) by simply tapping on the respective map icons. You can also add ’via’ points quickly and easily after you’ve commenced your journey. If you prefer, you can operate PCM as before using the right-hand rotary push-button control. 10 comments: Porsche 911 Turbo Ignoring cost, the LFA is the all-around greatest supercar ever built and every expert who’s driven it will tell you the same thing.
Much like the Supra that preceeded it, the LFA is not geared for 0-60 but for 60-120 acceleration as you would use when coming out of a corner when it actually counts, but 0-60 and torque don’t matter anyway if the LFA is still faster around any track you want to run them on. Also, the LFA’s 0-60 time was recorded with two passengers in the car as stated on the Lexus website, while the 911 turbo’s was done with just the driver as usual. The LFA isn’t a competitor for the 911 anyway, though. The 911 turbo is a very sporty 2+2 GT car available to anyone who can afford it; the LFA is an ultra-exclusive, record-breaking racecar with a Lexus interior. The 911 turbo competes against the R8 V10, SL AMG and Nissan GT-R; the LFA with the Apollo and CCX.
It was actually 7:24... and the Porsche is more powerful. The Porsche has 516lbs-ft of torque while the LF-A only has 354, and the LF-A has a 4.8liter V10... the Turbo has a 3.8litre six-cylinder boxer engine. The LF-A does 0-62 MPH (100 km/h) in 3.7 seconds, while the Turbo does the same at 3.4. I’m sorry man, but the Turbo is more powerful.
The LFA is inferior to the 911 turbo? The 911 turbo lapped the Nurburgring - which Porsche rented out for the day - in 7:39, while the LFA did it in 7:13 with traffic, bested only by the Apollo Sport’s 7:12. With the exception of "heritage," all the 911 turbo has over the LFA is a pair of back seats. Not that it isn’t a great car - I’d certainly buy it over a GT-R - but nothing can compete with the LFA.
Still, Turbo or GT3, they are both still magnificent cars. It’s what you would expect from a Porsche. I don’t think that it’s fair to compare a Porsche to a Lexus, except maybe the LF-A which is inferior to the Turbo, but still. The LF-A is not bad. It looks amazing, but the Turbo is just more powerful, not to mention the huge $250,000 gap between the two. I would most definitely buy the Turbo.
What’s with this when for the same price you could buy an Evora AND a GS 350? The 911 turbo is a great car especially considering the quality and refinement that comes with its performance, but it’s way over-priced.
"as much acceleration as a Colonial Fleet Raptor," Wouldn’t a Viper be more impressive than a hulking transport/ECM multi-purpose utility craft? After all, Vipers are the Porsche of space.
Well, Porche has forever been using boxer flat sixes with 3.8L or similiar displacement, so they are bound to have worked out the best mileage the engines have to offer. That said, I’d rather have the cheaper GT3. 415hp from a 6 cylinder is just insane.
They never really ran out of idea, do they? The 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo is more environment friendly than its previous model. And I guess in line of the global financial crisis, we can’t help but give Porsche a round of applause for the car’s fuel economy mechanism.
