It was at the 1974 Paris Motor Show when the German sports car maker Porsche unveiled a turbocharged version of the classic 911->ke282 for the first time when they pulled the covers back off of a 3.0 Liter Porsche 930->ke930 Turbo, a model which at the time amazed audiences with its 260 HP maximum output and the ability to reach a 155 MPH top speed. In 2009 the 911 Turbo entered its seventh generation, with considerable performance improvements resulting in a Carrera->ke574 Turbo that is almost twice as powerful as the original.

Even if the design has changed, the new Turbo remains unmistakably a 911, with a sporty focus on the driving essentials. The outer air intakes on the front apron now come with titanium colored slats. Sitting low to their left and right are the new daytime running lights in the same manner as the LED indicators and safety is even further enhanced with the optional dynamic cornering light function while the side mirrors have been revised for a better rearward visibility. At the rear of the new Turbo, the Porsche wears a new set of distinctive LED taillights that have a tapered design and extend deep into the contours of the rear fascia. The fast response LED brake lights underline the car's purposeful look and enhance active safety by offering more warning to traffic approaching from the rear.

As with the outgoing 2006 Turbo model, the flat six cylinder engine features a pair of snails with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG), but the new unit's displacement has been increased to 3.8 Liters and now develops 500 HP and as much as 516 lb-ft of torque with the Sport Chrono Package. This allows the new 91 Turbo to sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in only 3.4 seconds and reach a 194 MPH top speed when it goes on sale in the U.S. on January 30 with the coupe being priced at $132,800 and $143,800 for the cabriolet.

Press release

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is proudly presenting a new top model at the pinnacle of its broad range of production sports cars: The new Porsche 911 Turbo combines far-reaching innovations in technology with fine tuning and supreme refinement in design. All key features of this high-performance sports car have been significantly improved, the new 911 Turbo combining a substantial improvement in fuel efficiency and lower weight with more power, even higher speed, and enhanced driving dynamics.

Particularly in terms of fuel economy and dynamic performance, the new top-of-the-range 911 from Zuffenhausen now stands out even more than before from its competitors in the market. Porsche’s new top model will be presented to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show from 17 - 27 September.

The heart and highlight of the seventh generation of the Turbo is the new power unit displacing 3.8 litres and delivering maximum output of 500 bhp (368 kW). The first entirely new engine in the 35-year-history of the Turbo comes with features such as Direct Fuel Injection and Porsche’s exclusive turbocharger with variable turbine geometry on a gasoline power unit. And as an option, the new six-cylinder may be combined for the first time with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (Double-Clutch Gearbox).

Models equipped with PDK are also available with a new, optional three-spoke steering wheel with gearshift paddles as an alternative to the standard steering wheel with its proven shift buttons. Fitted firmly on the steering wheel, the right paddle is for shifting up, the left paddle for shifting down. In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo both the gearshift paddle and the PDK steering wheel with its shift buttons come with integrated displays for Launch Control and the Sport/Sport Plus mode, which are however designed differently on the two steering wheels.

The combination of PDK, Direct Fuel Injection and turbocharging ensures an unprecedented standard of efficiency, agility, responsiveness and performance, the Porsche 911 Turbo reducing CO2 emissions versus its predecessor by almost 18 per cent and therefore ranking unique in its segment also in this respect. Depending on the configuration of the car, the new top model requires just 11.4 - 11.7 ltr/100 km (equal to 24.8 - 24.1 mpg imp) under the EU5 standard. And unlike most other cars in its segment, the new Turbo remains even further below the crucial level of fuel consumption for gas guzzler tax in the USA, the special tax imposed on cars with substantial fuel consumption. All this despite acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Top speed, in turn, is 312 km/h or 194 mph.

The Turbo driver of the future will also enjoy a further improvement in driving dynamics, detailed enhancement of PTM fully controlled all-wheel drive and PSM Porsche Stability Management being further supported by new PTV Porsche Torque Vectoring available as an option. This makes the car even more agile and precise in its steering for an even higher level of driving pleasure.

Sales of the new Porsche 911 Turbo in both Coupé and Cabriolet guise are starting in Germany on 21 November 2009. The Euro base price without value-added tax and national specifications is Euro 122,400.- for the Coupé and Euro 131,800.- for the Cabriolet. The gross retail price in Germany, therefore, is Euro 145,871.- for the Coupé and Euro 157,057.- for the Cabriolet, in each case including 19% value-added tax and national specifications.

Exterior

A characteristic feature of the most powerful production 911 is the front apron with large cooling air intakes and bar-shaped LED direction indicators. New features are the titaniumcoloured louvers in the side air intakes and LED daytime driving lights replacing the conven - tional foglamps.

Available for the first time as an option on the new 911 Turbo, dynamic bending lights improve illumination of bends in the road ahead by the headlight module following the course of the road by swivelling in their angle up to 15o. Indeed, the sophisticated design of this doublelens projection system bears out the progressive and striking character of the new 911 Turbo most convincingly.

In their new design, the double-arm exterior mirrors offer a better view to the rear and pro - vide optimised aerodynamics with the mirror glass better protected from dirt.
Nineteen-inch Turbo II wheels in forged technology and twin-tone looks featured as standard on the new 911 Turbo provide a particularly appealing touch in terms of style and design. The rear view of the new 911 Turbo is even more powerful and muscular, not only on account of the classic split wing, but also and above all due to the newly designed rear lights in LED technology and the much larger tailpipes.

The latest generation of the top 911 in the range also comes with a new generation of stee - ring wheels. Models with the manual gearbox feature a new three-spoke sports steering wheel in modified design as standard. Cars with the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe are available for the first time as an alternative to the PDK steering wheel featuring its proven shift buttons with a new, optional three-spoke sports steering wheel complete with gearshift paddles.

These shift paddles are fitted firmly on the steering wheel, the right paddle serving to shift up, the left paddle to shift down.

In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo both the paddle and the PDK steering wheel come with push buttons and integrated displays. As a function of the button pressed, either the “Sport” or the “Sport Plus” light will switch on. And if the driver has acti - vated Launch Control, this function is also shown.

On the PDK steering wheel these displays are housed in an additional binnacle above the airbag module, on the new sports steering wheel with its gearshift paddles in the right and left double spoke.

Engine and performances

Introducing the new 911 Turbo making its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche is once again setting the highest standard in the high-performance sports car segment.
Indeed, the development borne out by the Turbo for greater efficiency on lower emissions as well as extra driving dynamics on less weight points convincingly into the future. To be specific, the new top-of-the-range Porsche production sports car consumes up to 16 per cent less fuel, develops 20 bhp more power, delivers 30 Nm/22 lb-ft more torque, and accelerates up to 8 per cent faster on a reduction in weight of up to 25 kg or 55 lb – not to mention the enhanced driving dynamics offered by the car.

Given these qualities, the new top model in the 911 range stands out even more clearly than before from its competitors particularly in terms of efficiency and acceleration. The main specifications (different figures for the Cabriolet where appropriate in brackets) are as follows: 3.8-litre six-cylinder biturbo horizontally-opposed power unit developing 500 bhp (368 kW); six-speed manual gearbox, optional seven-speed PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe; active PTM Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive; acceleration 0 – 100 km/h in 3.7 (3.8) seconds, with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package Turbo in 3.4 (3.5) seconds; top speed 312 km/h (193 mph); fuel consumption in the NEDC 11.6 (11.7) ltr/100 km equal to 24.3/24.1 mpg imp, with PDK 11.4 (11.5) ltr/100 km (equal to 24.8/24.6 mpg imp).

The heart and highlight of the new Porsche Turbo at the dealership in Germany as of 21 November is of course the new power unit now displacing 3.8 instead of 3.6 litres. This engine for the first time developed brand-new from the ground up in the 35-year history of the 911 Turbo comes with Direct Fuel Injection, an efficiency-enhancing expansion-type intake manifold, and a turbocharger exclusive to Porsche with variable turbine geometry (VTG) on a gasoline power unit. The result is not only an increase in output over the former model by 20 bhp to 500 bhp (368 kW), but also an increase in peak torque up by 30 Nm/22 lb-ft to 650 Nm/479 lb-ft.

As in the past, the Porsche Turbo comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. As an option the turbocharged power unit may for the first time be combined with the sevenspeed PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe which, unlike Tiptronic S on the former model, also comes with a limited-slip differential.

The PDK double-clutch gearbox is a further development of the transmission already featu - red in the 911 Carrera with reinforced components. The combination of PDK, Direct Fuel
Injection and turbocharging provides a new level of efficiency, agility, response and performance, the 911 Turbo with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package Turbo accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds (Cabriolet 3.5 seconds) with the help of Launch Control.

Supreme fuel efficiency: by far the most efficient high-performance sports car Fuel economy up to 16 per cent better than the competition even under the stricter EU5 standard gives the new Porsche Turbo a unique position in its market segment. In concrete terms, average fuel consumption of the 911 Turbo with PDK is down versus the former mo - del with Tiptronic S by 2.2 to 11.4 litres/100 kilometres /equal to 24.8 mpg imp).In over - land traffic both the Coupé and the Cabriolet, thanks to PDK with its optimum gearshift and the transmission of power with minimum losses, may easily return fuel consumption of less than 10 litres/100 kilometres (28.2 mpg imp or better) (extra-urban fuel consumption to the EU5 standard: Coupé 8.1 ltr/100 (34.9 mpg imp), Cabriolet 8.2 ltr/100 km (34.4 mpg imp). The overall balance of CO2 emissions has improved by an even greater margin, with CO2 down by almost 18 per cent thanks to the changeover from a converter automatic trans - mission to the Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. Emissions are also down on the manual gearbox model by approximately 11 per cent.

With the 911 Turbo already ranking right at the top in terms of efficiency, its lead over the competition is now improving dramatically once again. Indeed, the Porsche 911 Turbo is the only car in its segment to remain below the Gas Guzzler Tax limits in the USA, that is the additional tax imposed on vehicles with heavy fuel consumption.

Top performer also in acceleration and driving dynamics

Even with its manual gearbox featured as standard, the new Turbo accelerates from a stand - still to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds (Cabriolet 3.8 seconds). With the PDK gearbox the new Turbo completes the same exercise another tenth of a second faster, and with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo featuring dynamic engine mounts for the first time, the top-ofthe- range 911 offers an even higher standard of performance still, the integrated Overboost function increasing maximum torque by 50 Nm/37 lb-ft to no less than 700 Nm/516 lb-ft. This means acceleration from 0 – 100 km/h with the Sport Button pushed in just 3.6 seconds (Cabriolet 3.7 seconds) and, in combination with PDK, the Sport Plus Button and Launch Control, the fastest conceivable acceleration to 100 km/h is in a staggering 3.4 seconds (Cabriolet 3.5 seconds).

In the same mode acceleration to 200 km/h or 124 mph takes just 11.3 seconds (Cabriolet 11.8 seconds).

As a yet further highlight, the Sport Plus Button on the PDK gearbox activates the Race Track Gearshift Strategy with the shortest conceivable shift times and optimum gearshift points when shifting up and down.

To provide yet another improvement of both driving dynamics and motoring/vibration com - fort, the Sport Chrono Package Turbo also comes with dynamic engine mounts changing
their stiffness and damping as a function of driving conditions. This special feature signifi - cantly reduces the transmission of vibrations from the entire drivetrain and, in particular, from the engine to the body of the car.

New: Porsche Torque Vectoring PTV for even higher speeds in bends

The performance of the new 911 Turbo enhanced to an even higher standard goes hand in hand with driving dynamics even more outstanding than ever before. Accordingly, the further
development of PTM Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive and PSM Porsche Stabi - lity Management for even greater driving dynamics is supported by new, optional Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV).

This innovative system comprises a mechanical rear axle differential and, intervening in the brakes on the inner rear wheel in a bend as required, enhances the agility of the car while reducing any tendency to understeer. The result is even greater steering precision and stabi lity in bends, together with higher speeds on bends and winding roads.

PTM Porsche Traction Management now comes with an even higher standard of driving dynamics, the change in power distribution from front to rear taking place even more smoothly.
The big advantage for the driver is the very well balanced and forgiving behaviour of the car. PTM communicates in the new 911 Turbo with Porsche Stability Management likewise featured as standard. PASM Porsche Active Suspension Management, in turn, gives this unique high-performance sports car another active control system for optimum driving dynamics. Masterminded by a computer, this sophisticated damper technology benefits from the interaction of PTM and PSM by providing even more dynamic control. The driver is able to choose in this process among the Normal and Sport Mode, with the continuous damper adjustment following a more comfort-oriented or sporting and firm control map. As a result, the driving behaviour of the 911 Turbo adjusts flexibly to the individual wishes of the driver.

A fundamental point of Porsche’s safety philosophy is that brake power must always exceed engine power several times over. Precisely this is why the front wheels come with six-piston swing-calliper disc brakes measuring 350 millimetres or 8.9” in diameter. The four-piston swing-calliper brakes at the rear also come with discs measuring 350 millimetres across. Like all models in the 911 range, the new 911 Turbo is also available with PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes with ceramic discs measuring 380 millimetres/9.6” in diameter at the front for even faster response, very good resistance to fading and absolutely no corrosion. A further advantage of PCCB is the reduction of weight versus the standard brakeswith grey-cast iron discs by approximately 18 kg or 40 lb.

Chassis and Safety

Included as standard equipment, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is an electronic damping control system. It offers active and continuous adjustment of the damping force on each wheel based on current road conditions and driving style. PASM has two driver-selectable modes, 'Normal' and 'Sport'. While 'Normal' provides a blend of performance and comfort, the 'Sport' setup mode has a much firmer range of settings. The system responds to changing road conditions and/or driving style by continuously varying the individual damping forces within the parameters defined for the selected setup mode ('Normal' or 'Sport'). The results are a reduction in pitch and roll, as well as consistent road contact on all four wheels.

The optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo including dynamic engine mount system and overboost function provides simultaneous enhancement for engine, transmission and chassis.

When 'Sport' mode is selected using the button on the center console, the DME 3.1 SDI engine management system creates a much more aggressive response to throttle pedal inputs. Under full acceleration, the 'overboost' function provides a temporary increase in available boost pressure of approximately 0.2 bar. The overboost is applied across the lower and medium rev range, briefly raising the standard 480 Ib-ft of torque to as much as 516 Ib-ft. In addition to the engine, 'Sport' mode is enabled in the standard PASM suspension. The dampers become firmer, enabling faster turn-in as well as better contact with the road.

The optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo now includes a dynamic engine mount system. Electronically controlled, it modifies the stiffness of the engine mounts. Sensors are used to monitor the steering angle, longitudinal acceleration and lateral acceleration at all times. Based on this information, as well as road conditions and driving style, the system can adjust the stiffness of both engine mounts. On road or track, the result is the same: a noticeable improvement in stability under load transfer and during high-speed cornering.

Safety

The 911 Turbo models come with by Bi-XenonTM headlights as standard. They are approximately twice as bright as conventional halogen bulbs and offer a more uniform swath of light. The new dynamic cornering lights are available as an option and provide particularly effective illumination of the road. As a result, visibility is much improved in every corner and potential obstacles are easier to identify.

Other innovations on the 911 Turbo models include a new exterior lighting concept based on the high-performance LEDs on the horizontal front indicators and now also separately housed daytime running lights, the new taillights and the high-level third brake light on the rear wing. As well as adding to the car's striking appearance and high recognition factor, other advantages include greater luminance and an ultra-fast response of the brake lights. LEDs are also energy-saving, environmentally friendly and have a longer service life than conventional bulbs.

The standard braking system on the 911 Turbo features six-piston monobloc aluminum fixed calipers at the front and four-piston units at the rear. The brakes are quick to apply and release, while the pedal travel is short and the bite point precise and consistent.

The 911 Turbo models are also available with an optional high-performance braking system that has been successfully tested in the toughest endurance racing: the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). The ceramic discs are made from a specially treated carbon-fiber compound that is silicate in a high-vacuum process at 3,092 F. The resulting material is not only much harder than metal, it is also more resistant to heat. The key advantage of PCCB is a total weight saving of approximately 50% compared with equivalent cast-iron discs. In addition to enhanced performance and fuel economy, this represents a major reduction in both the unsprung and rotating masses.

Fitted as standard, POSIP includes side-impact protection beams in the doors and two additional airbags on each front seat instead of the usual one. A thorax airbag is located in the side of each backrest, while a head airbag is incorporated within each door. Each airbag has an approximate volume of 8 liters, helping to ensure excellent protection in the event of side impact. The head restraints for driver and front passenger form an integral part of each seat. Other safety features include an energy-absorbing steering column, three-point seat belts with height adjustment (Coupe only), front seat-belt pre-tensioners and force limiters, and energy-absorbing elements in the dashboard.

Torsional rigidity and flexural strength are exemplary for a two-plus-two convertible. The automatically deploying roll-over system helps to reduce risk to occupants if the car overturns. Two spring-loaded roll-over bars are neatly incorporated behind each of the rear seats. The roll-over sensor — part of the airbag control unit — continuously monitors the car's pitch and roll, contact with the road, as well as lateral and longitudinal forces. If the car overturns, the top-padded bars are instantly deployed.

Competitors and press reviews

"The first turn comes up fast. Little worry, as the American Le Mans Series veteran behind the wheel tosses the Turbo into the corner with a slight twitch. With its AWD system shredding the street tires, the Turbo maintains a slight oversteer approach as we fly past the apex. The power goes down hard and the PDK cracks off another gear as we exit the turn. We repeat the maneuver several more times before we round the corner to the straight. With a clean exit, the driver holds the pedal to the carpeted floor and lets the powertrain work its magic. In no time at all, the speedometer reads 262 km/h (162 mph). We start wondering why we left our helmets back in the garage." (AutoBlog)

"The PDK transmission works like magic. Every upshift was so quick it never upset the car — even midcorner on giant Parabolica Ayrton Senna (about 300-foot radius) when all four tires were howling at about 90 mph. Nearly imperceptible, automatic rev-matching downshifts came at the right time. We love the real shift paddles and the bespoke steering wheel, but it turns out you don't really need them. Like the Nissan GT-R, the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo is faster in Drive. Only after an entire day of pushing the car to its limits did the front tires (not the rears) begin to influence the behavior of the car when it began to exhibit very mild understeer." (InsideLine)

"The elaborate dry-sump-lubrication system, with its external tank, has also been changed to the standard 911 design with an integrated oil reservoir at the bottom of the engine, although separated from the crankcase. However, in the Turbo’s case, six—rather than four—oil-scavenge pumps are used to return oil to this reservoir because the two turbochargers each require a dedicated oil return." (CarAndDriver)

"So what's it like? Mind blowing and brilliant. Revised springs and dampers, and clever changes to the 4x4, have boosted agility and responsiveness; this 911 feels like a good (and light) rear-driver at times, so sharp is its turn-in, so instant is its response to your instructions. Cornering behavior can be beautifully tuned by throttle response -- there is no evidence of any meaningful turbo lag -- further boosting entertainment value. Yet when you're on full power, you can still feel that tidal wave of turbo boost, as the brawniest 911 erupts." (MotorTrend)

It's fast, it's sporty,it's turbo, it's a Porsche! Dow we need to say more? Lets see! It is powered by the most powerful engine Porsche has ever offered in a 911 model; it sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3,4 seconds and you can go beyond the 190 mph mark (if you have the courage of course).

Beside that the 911 Turbo comes with a very long list of options, so you can customize it to have an exclusive car. A car that will make everyone turn their head. So, go to a dealer and ask to see one. You shall see we were right about it!
