2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Let the drooling begin! Porsche has unveiled the official details on the most powerful street-legal model they have ever built. Limited to only 500 units, the new 911 GT2 RS officially went on sale last October in the USA on a reservation basis and was sold out in a matter of hours. Yeah, it sold out faster than an Eminem CD at Target.

The new GT2 RS is the most powerful production car in Porsche’s long and storied history and, as such, it smokes the standard GT2 - and every other Porsche model in history, for that matter - out of the water. Porsche managed to reduce the weight by 154 lbs and upgrade the engine’s output with 90 horsepower (for a total of 620 horsepower). This makes the RS sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds, 0 to 124 mph in just 9.8 seconds, and 0 to 186 mph in 28.9 seconds. Top speed is 205 mph. The sports car also delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 4.9 lb per horsepower and has a reported Nurburgring time of seven minutes and 18 seconds.

Exterior and Interior

As the fastest Porsche production car ever, the German automaker is making sure that the car’s exterior and interior features also won’t disappoint. So they decided to go all-out on the car’s aesthetics, starting with the lavish use of carbon-fiber-reinforced (CFR) components in a matte-black surface finish, even wider wheels and flared wheel arches at the front, new 911 GT2 light-alloy wheels with central locking, as well as ”GT2 RS“ model designations on the doors and rear lid. There’s also an upgraded front spoiler lip and a rear spoiler lip made of CFR that is 10 millimeters or almost 0.4 inches higher, giving the supercar the right aerodynamic precision to go with the added downforce. As for the interior, the 911 GT2 RS exudes the flair and panache of top quality sporting performance in virtually every detail, including the lightweight bucket seats made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic in carbon surface finish and lightweight door panels with door opening straps. The basic interior color is black, which is attractively in contrast to the seat center sections and the roof lining, as well as segments on the steering wheel rim. Keeping up with this luxurious styling, the 911 GT2 RS’ gearshift and handbrake lever are both finished in red Alcantara.

Performance

The 911 GT2 RS is powered by a 3.6 liter six-cylinder boxer engine that’s boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The car produces 620 horsepower with a 0 to 62 mph time of just 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 205 mph, and an impressive Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 18 seconds.

Pricing

Limited to just 500 units, the 911 GT2 RS Europe and the States with a base price of €199,500 including VAT and national specifications/equipment; that’s about $280,000 based on current exchange rates. Meanwhile, the same Porsche rocket will retail in Germany at a price of €237,578.

Competition

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is in the league of the big boys and, as such, if you’re looking for a competing car to match wits with this Stuttgart bad boy, you should be looking at a car like the Ferrari 458 Italia . Only the best meet the best, baby.

Talking about aesthetics, both cars are vastly different from each other yet share one thing that is remarkably similar: they’re sporty and aggressive exteriors go well with their luxurious interior features. Picking one over the other based on looks is like picking one hot brunette with an equally smoking blonde. You can’t go wrong either way.

The performance department is where we get some separation, albeit very little. While the 458 Italia comes with a powerful 4.5 Liter V8 engine that produces 570 horsepower with a 201-mph top speed, the 911 GT2 RS has the leg up, thanks to its 3.6 liter six-cylinder boxer engine with 620 horsepower and a 205-mph top speed. Despite the "slower" top speed, the 458 Italia jumps off the block as fast as the 911 GT2 RS, posting a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds compared to the 911 GT2 RS’ time of 3.5 seconds (0-62 mph).

The price for both cars hit well in the range of each other with the 911 GT2 RS ($280,000) being a little more expensive than the 458 Italia ($275,000).

In the end, we’re going to stick with the 911 GT2 RS on the grounds that with it being too close to call, we’ll choose the limited edition model. But since all 500 models have already been spoken for, then the 458 Italia comes as an excellent Plan 1A.

I thought the IS currently rode on a shortened GS platform. So they are taking it to what is basically a modded Legacy platform? Seems like they are dumbing down the IS. That doesn’t bode well for the GS as it doesn’t sell very well to have its own platform, unless it gets moved to a shortened LS chassis.

I think this thing would be at the top of my bucket list. I’ve only driven a 911 turbo so I can’t imagine how much more fun this could be but if I had to go, it would be maxing this thing out with a big "oh sh!t" grin on my face.

I always have a great feeling when a Porsche tops a Ferrari. This is due the fact that a Ferrari is looking much more aggressive and powerful, and will be smoked by a awesome car that is much more powerful than it looks like.

I think this thing would be at the top of my bucket list. I’ve only driven a 911 turbo so I can’t imagine how much more fun this could be but if I had to go, it would be maxing this thing out with a big "oh sh!t" grin on my face.

Off-course it will beat-it, 599gto 1600kg-700hp / 911gt2RS 1390kg-620hp. It will destroy it on a long track like the Ring.

what can you say, first good 911. It doesn’t even look street legal.

Agree though, drop the music and fast paced cuts...I want engine noises and power slides!

I am a huge porsche fan, i think that they are really unique at building their cars. They haven’t changed the layout of the 911 in the better part of 40 years. Porsche will always be my favorite manufacturer! the GT2 RS is a great car, and now the 918 is going into production

I just drove the new Turbo S and fell in love. If 530 hp are able to rise the heart rate that much, I guess driving/racing the GT2 RS should be something that might get you straight to the ER!!!

Yes, This is much faster than the GT2 because it’s more lighter and sporty breed 911

What? I don’t get is how 911 Turbo S could be faster and costs half as much. GT2 may beat turbo s but not by much I presume.

The weight of this car is seriously impressive and somehow they made it the same as the Carrera GT ( 3,050lbs) with even more power. Also I keep on thinking the special features that start at the most important changes, which can be found at the back of the car. The 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine now makes an astounding 620 horsepower routed to the rear wheels only though a proper six-speed manual gearbox.

What an amazing interior black and red are one of the best color combination to a sports car. And the bucket seat does look rare.

The RS is more on aluminum and crabon composites. That’s why it was rated more lighter that the GT2 porsche.

Excellent vehicle and quite cheap considering the rarity and that the only two cars that can beat it around Nurburgring—the Apollo Sport and LFA—both cost over $100K more.

Porsche has done it again... dear lord, this car is just ridiculous. The most powerful Porsche ever built is just jaw pulverizing. I want one.
