2011 Porsche Cayman R

Remember Porsche announced a few days ago it will bring a new mid-engined sports car in LA? Here it is! It is called Cayman R, and not CS as we expected; with R standing for responsive and refined, and of course racing. The name pays tribute to the first Porsche with the "R" designation, the 911 R of 1967. It will go on sale in February 2011, at a price of $66,300.

What makes the difference between a standard Cayman and the R version? First the engine. The Cayman R is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine that develops an impressive 330 HP. The the sprint from 0 to 60 mph, now made in 4.9 seconds (or 4,7 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono packages) and the top speed of 175 mph with manual gearbox, or 174 mph with PDK.

But that’s not all. With the new Cayman R, Porsche also focused on reducing the car’s weight. For that the company used only lightweight components and renounced to any convenience equipment. There is also a new set 19 inch light wheels. The result is a total weight of 2855 lb and a power-to-weight ration of 8.6 lb per horsepower.

Also for the exterior the Cayman R gets distinctive fixed rear spoiler, high-quality silver-painted wheels and numerous sporting highlights, black-framed headlights, black exterior mirrors and the "PORSCHE" lettering on the side – in contrasting black or silver, depending on the body color.

The Porsche alphabet reserves the letter R for very special sports cars: R for responsive and refined – but most especially for racy. The new Cayman R combines all these attributes without compromise. 55 kilograms (121 lb) lighter and with ten horsepower more than the Cayman S, the new mid-engine coupé from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is designed for spectacular road behaviour. With its specially adapted sports chassis, it provides an even more precise driving experience than the Cayman S. The Cayman R makes its world debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new mid-engine coupé is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine developing 330 hp (243 kW). In the standard configuration it transmits its power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox that propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.0 seconds. Or there is the option of the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) that reduces its acceleration time to 4.9 seconds. For even more impressive sprinting performance, the Cayman R can be supplied with one of the optional Sport Chrono packages, taking it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds. The new mid-engine coupé is capable of a top speed of 282 km/h (175 mph) with manual gearbox, or 280 km/h (174 mph) with PDK. Its NEDC fuel consumption is 9.7 l/100 km (29.12 mpg imp.) with six-speed gearbox and 9.3 l/100 km (30.37 mpg imp.) with PDK.

The main aim during the design of the Cayman R was to improve the two-seater even further in its performance, driving dynamics and agility through consistent weight reduction. With a DIN unladen weight of just 1,295 kilograms (2855 lb) the Porsche engineers were able to reduce the power-to-weight ratio of the coupé with standard manual gearbox to 3.9 kilograms (8.6 lb) per horsepower, with the PDK version weighing 4.0 kilograms (8.8 lb) per horsepower. The largest savings were achieved through the use of lightweight components and doing without convenience equipment. As for the 911 GT3/GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder, an optional lithium-ion lightweight construction battery is also available. In addition, the top model in the mid-engine coupé is equipped with the lightest 19 inch wheels the entire Porsche range can offer. The complete rim set weighs less than 40 kilograms.

The Cayman R’s purpose and purist character can be seen at first glance. The extended silhouette of the bodywork, which has been lowered by 20 millimetres (0.79 in) compared to the Cayman S, combined with the distinctive fixed rear spoiler, the high-quality silver-painted wheels and numerous sporting highlights on both the interior and exterior, ensures an individual appearance. The black-framed headlights, black exterior mirrors and the "PORSC RSC HE" lettering on the side – in contrasting black or silver, depending on the body colour – take design cues from classic Porsche racing cars.

Precisely this lettering was the trademark of the first Porsche with the "R" designation, the 911 R of 1967. It was created for racing sport use in a small series of 19 cars. The "R" was a prototype based on the standard coupé with a 210 horsepower Carrera 6 engine and, thanks to its many plastic components and extremely sparse equipment, weighed only 830 kilograms (1830 lb).

The body paint are very pleasant to look at. This concept would be tough if it has a strong engine performance.

There’s no doubt that Porsche is one of the best car companies in building extraordinary cars. This one’s amazing and it looks very luxurious. Nevertheless, I don’t like the color combination of the exterior as well as the interior.

This Porsche Cayman is one of the best, coolest and wonderful car I have seen produced by Porsche. That golden car looks beautiful. I want to have this. As in.! smiley

The body paint are awesome due to it’s light colors. I’m looking forward to the upgrade version of this from it’s exterior to it’s engine output.

I must say that it doesn’t really matter at all if it don’t has a radio system, as long as it had a nice engine specification.

I don’t think that its 350 horsepower is already for a super-fast vehicle. There’s still lots of more powerful output out there than with this one. Moreover, I’m also looking forward to the upgrade version of it.

It looks amazing on its body paint but just like them; I’m also looking forward to the upgrade version of this, from its exterior to its engine output. Moreover, I hope that they as well include next time a radio system on it.

So that’s it.. I’m really looking forward to the upgrade version of the engine and reducing the weight of the Cayman.. However, I must say that the interior is already impressive.

It doesn’t really need to have a powerful engine just like what a sports vehicle has for the fact that it is only a sedan. Anyway, I truly admire this Cayman for it absolutely looks so stunning on its body paint.

Even though it doesn’t have a radio system, I’m still impressed with it for having such a comfortable interior! smiley I also have to agree that it is already looking great with its green body paint.

It was really so sad to hear, that it doesn’t have a radio system, but in spite that I can say that I still find it, so fun to drive and this one is already looking good on that body paint.

Well this Porsche Cayman R is seems so powerful and aggressive on its platform and even on its other detailing. Furthermore, I must say that it doesn’t really matter at all if it don’t have a radio system, as long as it had a nice engine specification.

Porsche Cayman R is absolutely very striking on its body paint an in spite of having a the same platform to their other car, I must say that I’m still impressed with it, but why does it not have a radio system?

Cayman R really had a good look, and it is very appealing on its body paint but I’m just kind of disappointed to know that it didn’t have a radio system which is the number one technology that the car needs to have.

330 horsepower is I think only enough of this car. Well, as what I’ve expected on Porsche, this one is very impressive just like their other car.

Great choice of color, but just like them, I’m disappointed that it didn’t have a radio system, so unlike with the other car. And I’m just wondered if is it already on the market?

A green car! smiley I love the color that it had hehe even the detailing on this Cayman R is already quite impressive but why is it don’t have any radio system? smiley

I’m looking forward too for the version of the engine of this car. And also the design and the style of this car.

Either way though, unless the track is the ONLY place you’ll be driving the cars, I think the Cayman is still much more easy to live with. As much as
I love to admire the Exige and want to drive one someday, you can’t even see out of the back window of the Exige
