With so many anniversary models being released in the past few months, German->ke2091 automaker Porsche->ke1 wasn't going to be left out on all the fun.

After all, the company is celebrating an anniversary of its own,; or at least an anniversary for one of its models.

Back in 1963, the world first laid eyes on the 911. In the 50 years that it’s been in existence, the 911 has not only become a Porsche classic, but it's also become a global icon, a stature only a handful of cars can claim to have reached.

So with the 911 celebrating its own golden jubilee, Porsche decided to unveil a special edition model for the occasion. It's called the 911 Carrera->ke574 S 50th Anniversary Edition, and as you can expect, it comes with plenty of design characteristics that differentiates itself from any other Porsche 911 today.

The car is expected to make its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show later this year, but this early, the German automaker saw fit to give us an idea of what to expect.

Exterior

There isn’t anything overly drastic as far as design overhauls where this model is concerned. That being said, it's an anniversary model that will be sold in limited quantities, so expect some unique digs that are all its own.

For starters, the 911 Carrera S 50th Anniversary Edition will come in two different colors - Graphite Grey and Geyser Grey metallic - with both also coming with a regular black shade.

In addition to the pair of color choices, the special edition 911 Carrera S also has a distinctive ‘911 50’ badge that has been finished in two-tone 3D-style on the rear lid. High-gloss window frames are also part of the package, as are SportDesign exterior mirrors, and a new set of “Fuchs” style 20-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

Moving inside, you're going to notice a host of features that might take you back to the classic 911s. The fabric seats, for one, are similar to the ones that dressed up the interior of the original models. Remember the “Pepita” tartan design from the 1960s? It's present on the center section of the leather-trimmed sport seats, the colors of which you can actually specify in either Agate Grey or Black with decorative stitching.

Plus, look at the instrument panel and you'll see the classic green and white combination on the labeling and the pointer needles with silver caps.

Finally, the same “911 50” logos adorn the seat headrests, the rev counter, and the aluminum door sill plates.

Performance

The Porsche 911 Carrera S 50th Anniversary Edition is powered by a 3.8-liter flat-six engine with a Powerkit (U.S. market only) that can produce 430 horsepower. The U.S.-Spec model will hit 60 mph in only 4.2 seconds with the PDK transmission and tops out at 186 mph (185 mph with PDK).

The UK model will not use the Powerkit, leaving the power at 400 horsepower, while mated to either a seven-speed manual transmission or a dual-clutch PDK transmission. These gearbox options are important because the former allows the car to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph, while the latter can zoom the same distance in 4.3 seconds with a slightly lower top speed of 185 mph.

Pricing

The 911 Carrera S 50th Anniversary Edition will go on sale in September. UK pricing has been set at £92,257, which is around $141,100 based on current exchange rates. In the U.S., the Porsche 911 Carrera S 50th Anniversary Edition will come in at $124,100, plus $995 delivery. It will hit U.S> dealers in the fall of 2013.

Competition

2013 Jaguar F-Type

It seems fitting to have an old guard like the 911 Carrera S, special edition model notwithstanding, take on a new cat off the block in the form of the Jaguar F-Type.

Performance-wise, the latter can definitely hold its own against the iconic 911, thanks to a supercharged V-6 engine that delivers a total of 380 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 to 5,500 rpm. That cat can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds and goes up to a top speed of 171 mph.

More importantly, Jaguar has a special customization program for the F-Type, a sample of which we saw with the Firesand version. So if any prospective customer wishes to make its particular F-Type as unique as the 911 Carrera S 50th Anniversary Edition, it won't be too hard to do so.

Conclusion

If you've lasted for 50th Anniversary and people of different generations still hold you to high esteem, there's nothing bad people can say about you. That's the stature of the Porsche 911. Now or in the future.
