More than likely you are sitting in a chair on your computer while reading this article, but with the rampant use of iPhones, iPads, and other such equipment (we aren’t judging, I personally run to my iPhone every time it beeps like some Pavlov disciple) we highly recommend that if you are not sitting down, you should grab a chair and do so. Why the drama? We have more details surrounding the Porsche “Baby” Boxster and its scheduled appearance in 2014. Now, we know that date is two years longer than we had originally reported, but that’s the automaker world for you. Things change all the time.
We hope that with this extra cushion of time, Porsche->ke1 can really knock our socks off with this Boxster tot. Rumored to be a response to the Toyota/Subaru sports car which will match or beat the Boxster’s performance, is priced at about $20,000, and is due out soon, Porsche will attempt to cut costs and price this puppy at a moderate $30,000. Porsche plans on reducing costs by combining efforts with Volkswagen and using some of their components to tackle this project.
The Porsche “Baby” Boxster will come to be with the use of Porsche’s adaptation of Volkswagen’s->ke94 mid-engine platform and will have an aluminum hood and aluminum doors to keep the weight below 2700lbs. Porsche is currently deciding whether to go with a 2.0L flat four turbo engine producing 300hp or the cheaper 2.0L inline four cylinder turbo engine. Either way, the engines will be mated to a six speed manual gearbox or, as an option, the dual-clutch seven speed transmission. Volkswagen components will also be used on the interior to keep costs down.

This new adaptation to the Porsche Boxster may leave you scratching your head: Am I dealing with a Porsche or a Volkswagen? Well, technically, you’ll be dealing with both. Since Volkswagen has control over Porsche and Porsche wants to make a mini (aka cheaper) Boxster, it is inevitable that some component sharing is done. The way we see it is this; you can either drive around in a baby Boxster, which is still a hot little speedster, or you can drive around in a Volkswagen that will inevitably contain Porsche technology. It’s the proverbial, you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours mantra. A win-win scenario in our book.
