BMW has a storied history of taking the M3 racing. For decades, the pumped up Bimmer has dominated race tracks in the hands of privateers and factory-backed guises. Of course, the race-prepped M3 has always been based on the Coupe and the M3 Coupe no longer exists. What is BMW to do? They turn their new M4 into a race car, of course.

Meet the BMW M4 DTM.

Based on BMW’s new high-performance coupe, the M4 DTM will be the tool the Bavarian use to challenge for the world championship in the German Touring Car Championships. The new machine is powered by a high-revving V-8 that produces 480 horsepower. The actual engine is capable of producing much more power, but the DTM adds air-restrictor regulations to help keep the performance envelope of the cars close.

Like the previous M3 DTM, the new M4 is fitted with an extreme body kit with flared fenders and plenty of downforce. BMW had a great season when they returned to racing with the M3 two years ago. Now with that experience under their belt, the new car should be nearly unstoppable on the track.

Red Bull pulls out the computer-generated stops in this video, explaining in amazing graphic detail the changes within Formula One ’s 2014 rulebook . The changes are numerous and extensively alter the race cars ’ makeup, but as Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel elaborate in the short video, will make the cars more powerful, fuel efficient, and safer.

The main changes consist of a new nose, front wing, rear wing, engine, transmission, and enhanced energy recovery system. Starting with the engine, the V-8 and seven-speed transmission are swapped out for a turbocharged 1.6-liter, V-6 and new eight-speed gearbox. The V-6 features a higher compression ratio, a massive turbo and a new rev limiter set to 15,000 rpm. However, teams are now allotted only five complete engines per season rather than eight.

Helping the V-6 out is the energy recovery system. It now has two generator units producing an extra 160 horsepower on top of the 600 horsepower from the engine. The new generator gathers rotational energy from a turbo-like spool within the exhaust system while the carryover generator still uses regenerative braking. Collecting all that power is a battery pack capable of holding 10 times the amount of energy – giving the car 33 seconds of battery power per lap over the 6.6 seconds of the outgoing unit.

The Formula One season begins March 14 in Melbourne, Australia and will continue through the end of November.

Just in time for the 2014 Geneva Motor Show is coming to the party with a new racing concept that’s based on the all-new Lexus RC F performance coupe .

The race car is called the RC F GT3 Concept and as its name suggests, Lexus built and developed it to meet Group GT3 international racing standards. All the preparations leading up to this point will actually come in full bloom next year when the concept is turned into a full-fledged racing car that will become available to racing teams beginning in the 2015 season.

So in the meantime, the RC F GT3 Concept will proudly wave to attendees of the Geneva Motor Show before undergoing a series of tests later this year to ensure that the car is fit and ready to tackle some of the best GT3 races in the world, including the 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race and the Super Taikyu Endurance and Super GT series in Japan.

When the checkered flag finally fell at the 2014 Daytona 500 late Sunday night, it was over Dale Earnhardt Jr .’s Chevrolet SS -inspired Sprint Cup race car . Earnhardt’s win came after a long day of racing and waiting with several multi-car pile-ups and an excruciating six hour rain delay.

While Earnhardt’s Chevy SS took much of the spotlight, it wasn’t the only SS circling the steep banks at the Great American Race; not considering the other tube-frame SS-look-a-likes trailing behind Jr.’s number 88 car. Pacing the race was the real deal, a 2014 Chevrolet SS modified only with safety strobe lights and Daytona 500 decals.

The SS is powered by GM ’s 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 making 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of rear-wheel-spinning torque. A six-speed automatic with paddle shifters sends power to the rear differential sporting a 3.27:1 final drive ratio. Unfortunately, this four-door Camaro isn’t offered with a clutch pedal, but the automatic does allow for fairly quick shifts.

Inside the SS is a cabin showcasing GM’s new-found efforts in interior quality with materials and fit and finish on par with offerings from Cadillac and Buick . Heavily bolstered leather seats, a leather-covered steering wheel, and suede-like material give the car an upscale feel while buttons and controls have a weighted, rich feel to them.

For pacing duties, the SS is fitted with an aerodynamic light bar up top and strobes in the head and taillights. Daytona 500 decals and stripes are stuck to the SS’ Red Hot 2 paint color. Lower profile tires and optional chrome wheels further separate the car from regular production units.

Updated 07/18/2014: Chevrolet announced today that actor Chris Pratt will serve as pace car driver on July 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He will drive a 2014 red and silver Chevrolet SS pace car and apparently its a dream come true for him. Of course, the announcement comes with a new set of images of the SS Pace Car, so check them in the "Images" tab.

Jann Mardenborough is a name we probably should get used to hearing. The young 22-year-old English driver has been added to Red Bull’s driver development program for 2014, largely due to his winning the 2011 Nissan GT Academy and subsequent stops at GT racing, Formula 3 and LMP2.

But none of that can compare to Mardenborough’s biggest achievement to date: debuting at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year with Greaves Motorsport, in a Zytek Z11SN Nissan , finishing third in class with co-drivers Lucas Ordonez and Michael Krumm.

So the kid can drive and as it turns out, Red Bull is snapping him up for its driver development program, and a big part of that will be his debut into GP3 class racing with Arden Motorsport. As if that isn’t pressure enough, Mardenborough will have some big shoes to fill at Arden as he is essentially replacing another Red Bull-backed driver Daniil Kvyat, who has since moved on to Formula One with Scuderia Toro Rosso.

From what we’ve seen of him, Mardenborough has a good head on his shoulders and he should be able to make a comfortable transition into GP3. That being said, we’re gonna keep a close eye on the kid to see how far he’s come along since winning the Nissan GT Academy in 2011.

We’ve already had a look and listen at Volvo’s engine for the V8 Supercars racing series, and now another equally uninspiring car is debuting. This time around, it’s the Nissan Altima Coupe that is showing that it can deliver on the race track.

There is no mention of what engine is under its hood, but it’s safe to say that there is some form of V-8, like the series’ name alludes to. This isn’t the Altima ’s first crack at the V8 Supercars series , but this is a new design for the team.

The new aero package slapped on this hot Altima includes smaller scallops on the front bar and redesigned rear wing uprights. Also tweaked is the livery, as it now features a pearlescent yellow paint and reflective white vinyl in the "Norton" logo.

There will be two Altimas running the series, with James Moffat at the helm of the No. 360 car and Michael Caruso in the No. 36 car. The racing kicks off February 27th in Adelaide, South Australia and end December 7th in Sydney Olympic Park, New South Wales.

Proving it’s more than just safe station wagons, Swedish car company Volvo is entering one of Australia’s toughest races, the V8 Supercar Series with its highly modified S60 sedan .

As Volvo teased earlier this week, the S60 is powered by a monstrous 5.0-liter V-8 kicking out 650 naturally aspirated horses and 487 pound-feet of tire-shredding torque. The result is a zero to 62 mph time of only 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 185 mph. The engine was developed by the famous Volvo tuner Polestar from Volvo’s existing 4.4-liter V-8 found in the S80 and XC90 . Polestar modified the aluminum block and bolted on new aluminum heads to help achieve a 10:1 compression ratio while eight individual throttle bodies carry E85 fuel to the cylinders.

Today the Volvo race team showed off their S60 racer for the first time by driving it across Australia’s most famous bridge and holding a press conference in its shadow. On Saturday, the team to hit the track at the Sydney Motorsport Park in a shakedown day before competing in the Clipsal 500 on March 1st though 2nd.

If last week Drive’s Inside quattro GmbH series too a look at the development process of the R8 V10 Plus. This time around, Drive took trip behind the scenes at Audi ’s home and spent some time at the Audi Sport Customer Racing program at Quattro GmbH — the home of the R8 LMS Ultra race car.

This video will teach you about how the R8 LMS Ultra race car is built, plus you get to watch various testing sessions and you will hear different opinions on how good or bad it is.

As a reminder, the R8 LMS Ultra is powered by a 5.2-liter, V-10 engine that delivers a total of 570 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. This power is transferred to the rear wheels through a a sequential, pneumatically activated, six-speed gearbox. The car is priced at €350,000 — about $475,000 at the current exchange rates.

Canada is fast becoming the home to a lot of start-up manufacturers. Maybe there’s something to all that maple syrup?

Whatever it is, another manufacturer has come to life bearing yet another sports car . This one is called the Felino CB7, a Quebec-born vehicle that Antoine Bessette, the man behind the project, describes as "purpose built for the track" that could also be street legal.

If you’re wondering if Felino hastily prepared this vehicle by slapping on components, dropping an engine, and drawing its design on a sheet of paper, you’d be wrong. As a matter of fact, the company took four years to develop and build the concept car using only the finest materials around. It’s a high-performance vehicle that certainly looks the part, although the rear end leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.

The Felino CB7 was unveiled at the 2014 Montreal International Auto Show, and from the looks of things, Felino built and developed a track racer that has the potential to be talked about by a lot of people for a long time.

There will probably come a time when Mercedes vehicles will look like this. That time hasn’t come yet, and we’re not really sweating t too much, especially when there are things like Gran Turismo that can give us glimpses of what the future could look like.

To this point, BMW and Mercedes have unveiled their Vision Gran Turismo Concepts . But Mercedes isn’t content with just one iteration of its concept; nope, it actually has two of these concepts and the latest is the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Racing Series.

According to Mercedes, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Racing Series was designed to compete in Gran Turismo 6’s "competitive racing scene." That’s all well and good and the concept looks really incredible. It’s also slightly modified from the "standard" Mercedes Vision Gran Turismo Concept to fit its racing credentials, including the addition of a a fixed rear wing that improves downforce on high-speed circuits and conventional mirrors in place of the CCS cameras the original concept had.

As far as performance goes, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Racing Series is powered by a 5.5-liter, twin-turbo, V-8 engine that produces an impressive 591 horsepower and connected to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. No performance numbers were given, but seeing as the car only weighs 2,866 pounds, it should be good for at least 200 mph.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo Racing Series is now available on Gran Turismo 6, and you can acquire it by participating in a new seasonal event that’s available in the game.
