From the folks that gave us the SR3 SL comes another race car set to get your hearts pumping on the track. The new SR1 by Radical Motorsports->ke3734 is an entry level sports-prototype racing car aimed at the track-day driver and club racer. It is priced at a measly £29,850, or $37,800 at the current exchange rates.

The new SR1 was designed by the same guys responsible for the Radical’s SR9 LMP2 racecar, so it follows in the same design direction, but tweaked for current track regulations. It has been designed to be ideal for both the driver and the passenger.

Under the hood, the racing prototype gets an RPE-Suzuki four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 210 HP and is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox as standard. The SR1 can go up to a top speed of 138 mph and sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.

UPDATE 08/23/2012: The Radical SR1 has begun testing at Bedford Autodrome, one of the locations for next year's Radical SR1 Cup championship for novice drivers and trackday enthusiasts. Radical has marked this time in their history with a new video introducing all drivers to their new Radical SR1. Check it out by clicking on the image above.

Exterior and Interior

The new Radical SR1 was built on a carbon steel space-frame chassis with an integral safety cell - complying with MSA safety requirements - and an aluminum front crash structure. The car's body is comprised of four-piece lightweight fiber-glass so it weighs just 1146 lbs.

The SR1 is equipped with rear view mirrors, composite side pods with radiator inlet and internal ducting, composite side-skirts, a removable composite tail section with integral induction intake and ventilation grilles, a rear wing with end plates, and rear brake and fog lights. It sits on 13" Radical cast aluminum wheels combined with 240mm× 25mm, 30-vane ventilated discs front and rear.

The interior of the SR1 received seats made of molded composite, a carbon fiber dashboard, and a display unit that offers details on the engine parameters/speed and warning lights. To fill safety requirements for the track, Radical is offering a comprehensive safety cell and deformable crash structure tested to FIA standards, racing-specification harnesses, and an integral fire extinguisher system.

A nice little added touch to the finesse of the vehicle is the owner's name placed on the side of the cockpit. Nothing says "mine" like a little tattooing.

Competition

If you're looking for a track alternative to the new Radical SR1, you'll find it in the Caterham SP/300.R, a more powerful and fastest alternative. It is powered by a 2.0-liter Ford Duratec Supercharged engine that delivers 301 HP and can go up to a top speed of 180 mph. Still, the extra power comes with a huge price: $135,000.

The choice really comes down to what you will be using the car for. If taking your racing prototype to a competition is in the cards, then a more powerful model may be better. If you just want to have fun, then the Radical SR1 will get the job done.
