The history of the Dodge Ram began back in 1981 when the original model was launched onto the market. Since then, many things have changed, with the Heavy Duty version to be unveiled in 2009. And now, for the 2013 model year the new Ram Heavy Duty has been updated with an all-new interior, next-generation Uconnect Access, Powernet, new frames and new suspension.

2013 model year also marks the debut of the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine as standard equipment. It delivers a total of 383 HP and a peak torque of 400 lbs-ft and is mated to a 66RFE six-speed automatic transmission. Next to it the renowned 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output Turbo Diesel I-6 is now available in three versions: 350 HP, 370 HP and 385 HP.

The 2013 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty will go on sale in the first quarter of 2013.

The exterior

Exterior changes for the 2013 model year started with the addition of an all-new grille, new quad headlamp design featuring bi-functional halogen projectors and LEDs for park/turn and tail lamps.

Dodge has also added new power folding 6x9-inch outside mirrors that help to monitor traffic and obstacles on the side of the truck, plus an upgraded tailgate handle-mounted rear camera back-up system.

The exterior door and fender badges have been relocated in order to offer a cleaner appearance but more usable real estate on the door for a commercial customer’s signs and graphics. The pick-up is now being offered with a choice of new , crafted 18-inch and 20-inch wheel designs that incorporate trim level themes.

The interior

The Ram's interior has been significantly redesigned with material upgrades, improved fit and finish, new colors, HVAC controls and new multi-media systems. The driver will now enjoy an upgraded center stack with the next generation 8.4-inch Uconnect system.

All trim levels will now be offered with a 3.5-inch vehicle information center screen, while select models will be offered with a 7-inch multiview display.

The engine

Both the Ram 3500 and 2500 Heavy Duty will be offered with a standard 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine tat delivers a total of 383 HP at 5,600 rpm and a peak torque of 400 lb.-ft. at 3,950 rpm. The HEMI V-8 is mated to a 66RFE six-speed automatic transmission.

As an option, customer will can also opt for a renowned 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output Turbo Diesel I-6 available in three versions. The first version delivers a total of 350 HP at 2,800 rpm and 660 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,500 rpm and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The second version delivers 370 HP at 2,800 rpm and a peak torque of 800 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The third version delivers a total of 385 HP at 2,800 rpm and a peak torque of 850 lb.-ft. at 1,600 rpm. This version is paired with a new Aisin six-speed automatic transmission (AS69RC).

Chassis and suspensions

The 2013 Ram Heavy Duty is now being offered with new frames built with high-strength 50 KSI steel, including eight separate cross-members, hydroformed main rails and fully boxed rear rails for optimal strength and mass efficiency.

Dodge is also offering a new front and rear suspension system with advanced geometry builds upon the chassis improvements and greatly improves overall roll stiffness.

There is also a new conventional trailer hitch system upgraded to Class 5 with a 17,000-lb. load capability and 1,800 pounds of tongue weight for use with 2-inch or 2.5-inch receiver hitches.

Prices

The 2013 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty will be put on sale in the first quarter of 2013. Prices will be announced at a later date.

The competition

The list of competitors for the new Ram Heavy Duty starts with the Ford Super Duty - a pick-up offered with a 6.7 Liter Power Stroke turbo diesel V8 or the new 6.2 Liter gasoline V8 and 6.8 Liter V10. Another competitor, the Chevrolet Silverado is preparing for an update for the 2014 model year. The model will be offered with a new exterior and interior, plus a new engine line-up.
