One of the most impressive vehicles brought by Renault at the Geneva Motor Show is the R-Space concept, a simple, sensuous and welcoming family vehicle that express Renault’s new design philosophy in the MPV segment. Renault said nothing about a production version, but we believe that Renault won’t bring a concept car just as a simple exercise.

"R-Space brings together qualities long considered opposed: family, functionality, sportiness and sensuality," explains Axel Breun, Director of Design for Concept and Show Cars. "It answers the expectations of a large slice of our modern society."

the R-Space is 4.25 meters long and features a prominent grille, a panoramic windscreen and "suicide" rear doors that are already a mark for Renault’s latest concepts. The concept is powered by a turbocharged three-cylinder, 110 hp, 900cc petrol engine mated to an Efficient Dual Clutch transmission (EDC).

The exterior

The new R-Space concept is distinguished by a dynamic profile, large windscreen and panoramic roof. According to Renault the R-Space’s design language has been inspired by the human body. "With R-Space, it was the pent-up energy in tensed muscles that inspired me," reveals Fabrice Pouille, exterior designer. "I wanted to make people feel the urge to caress the body, to make it sensuous - despite the fact that this is an MPV aimed at families."

Up front Renault has placed a large, vertically-oriented Renault grille, while the body panels are shaped as sculptured volumes. The concept also gets a panoramic windscreen, 21-inch alloy wheels, "suicide" rear doors, and LED lighting units. The concept is finished in honey-gold paint.

The interior

Interior designer Alexandre Gommier explains: "To reinterpret this idea in a modern context, we provided a strong visual and functional contrast between the driver environment, where the focus is on driving pleasure, and a surprising and highly-original rear section conceived as a play space for children."

The concept’s seats and dashboard are inspired by the DeZir concept, while the rear has been specially designed for the children. There is a play space, flexible and infinitely versatile, and formed from a simple and universal shape - the cube.

The engine

The R-Space concept features an engine that was developed by the recent Renault-Nissan Alliance. it is a 900cc, this three-cylinder concept-engine that delivers 110 HP and 160Nm of torque, while consuming just just 3.7 liters/100km.

In order to improve the concept’s consumption, R-Space comes with a a system known as DRIVINGECO². With a simple push of the "Eco" button, this system automatically adapts engine response in relation to the various parameters influencing energy consumption (altitude, ambient temperature, use of heater, etc).

With a total weight of 2,866 lbs, the R-Space will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 11 seconds and hit a top speed of 124 mph.

The competition

Renault said nothing about a production version, but if put into production the R-Space will have serious competitors on the market. At the same show Ford has brought the B-Max, a concept powered by a three-cylinder 1.0-liter Ford EcoBoost petrol engine equipped with the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system that will go into production by 2012.

The European market also has the Opel Meriva, a model offered with a wide range of power train options with outputs ranging from a very economical 75 HP up to 140 HP. The Meriva’s engine will be mated to a choice of five and six speed manual transmissions as well as a smooth shifting six speed automatic.

When can I buy one?

Do not expect Renault to make a final decision on this concept by 2012, and if built a production version won’t come before 2013.

- Cool door design
- Looks great in gold
- Play space for children

- The engine is not very impressive
- The car’s front looks weird

This concept is pretty awesome. The 2011 Renault R-Space car looks so great with the gold color. I love every part of this car, especially the tires and the unique doors.

The concept maybe got from space. Well, this one is not a failure instead it could be a success. The wheels are stunning that opens new possibilities in designing even in the smallest parts of the car. The roofing system is impressive. I must say, this one was filled with art.

Is it an electric vehicle? Well, I just only noticed that it has a weak engine output that a hybrid car can actually deliver. However, I’m so fond with its cozy and comfortable interior.

It looks so futuristic on its abstract design, but I must say that it’s really very attractive on that. I also noticed that its wheels make it more looks perfect. However, I’m too disappointed on its engine.

The front design gives the aggressive looks of it, and it looks so fabulous on its gold body paint. The wheels are cool either, even the interior seems to have a futuristic touch.

I like the concept of R-Space, from a sporty look, smooth interior space and wide-opening suicide door plus the top view on the roof.
