It appears that the German luxury automaker, BMW is struggling with whether or not to replace the engine in their high performance halo car for 2011. The next generation BMW M5 will either powered by a more efficient version of the current car’s V10 engine or if speculators have their way, the next 5 Series super sedan could be motivated by a healthy helping of boost. That is because BMW is already running a high performance twin turbocharged V8 in both the X5M and X6M sport activity vehicles, and with a little bit of innovative German engineering the BMW boffins could have the mill screaming to the tune of over 600 HP.
Reports have shown that BMW are cautious about continuing to use the V10 because of the CO2 emissions regulations in the U.S. a problem that can be avoided by going with a pair of less pistons. However if the M5 is to maintain its status as one of the brand’s premier vehicles then it would help to have something special under the hood, something not found in any other Bimmer, something to make it even more desirable.
So the question that the BMW engineers have to ask themselves right now is, what would be the better plan for the future? An all out high performance naturally aspirated V10 might sound like a fantastic idea for a sports car power plant, but with the current trend of environmentalism and efficiency, the idea of downsizing and turbo charging is becoming a widely accepted practice in the automobile industry. Early this morning in the sleepy town of Stuttgart, a group of German police inspectors arrived at the Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen complete with search warrants in hand in an attempt to uncover some evidence of suspicious activity. The search order was handed down by their local public prosecutor’s office and dealt with the suspicion of breaching a publication duty as prescribed by the German Stock Corporation Act which means that they could have been manipulating the German market. The boys in blue who were on the scene were said to have seized numerous business documents by the end of their exploration.
Of course the German sports car manufacturer denies any allegations and are cooperating fully with the German officials in the hopes for a speedy resolution. Off the news that Porsche is making major moves on the financial market, recently selling 10% of their stock to a state run Quatar based investement group and only a short period of time after the Porsche/VW merger was completed, the perfect time for a world wide corporation to fudge some paperwork, not that this is the case. However now that the authorities are involved, this incident can’t help but make you think back to this past January when one of the richest men in the world, Adolf Merckle, took his own life after betting wrong in a big way on the German automotive conglomerate VW, which is now quite entangled with the sports car maker Porsche.

For the longest time, MINI has always catered to a specific compact car audience. But now that car buyers are becoming more and more sophisticated with their auto preferences, MINI has decided to follow suit.
We’ve heard for a while now that the BMW-owned carmaker is working on a Crossover vehicle, but the latest news to come out of the woodwork has MINI in the initial stages of producing a Performance Crossover that we can only expect will bolster the company’s intention of introducing new vehicles to a number of different demographics.
Proof that these guys are serious about branching out from their traditional compact car niche lies in the fact that, in addition to the ‘two’ Crossovers, the company has also been working on producing two other vehicles – the MINI Speedster and the Progressive Activity Spacebox – which, if everything goes according to plan, would be rolled out of the plant sometime within the next two years.

The Japanese automaker Nissan ran into trouble in the U.S. and even in its own country in the mid 1990s. Here in the states, almost all turbocharged imports were getting a bad name because of eager enthusiasts blowing up their rotary Mazda’s motor or the smog problems faced by cars like the almighty Toyota Supra. Even Nissan decided to pull the technologically advanced 300ZX TT off the market because it just became too expensive for a conservative market. At home, the twin turbo Z32 lived on until the year 2000, the all around excellent sports car found itself in a precarious position between the much more affordable and equally as desirable S15 Silvia and Godzilla himself, the R34 Skyline GT-R. At the end of the day Nissan killed off all of its turbo sports cars, but the Z was unfortunately the first to bite the dust.
Today the word turbo is more synonymous with efficiency than it is with power, so in an attempt to join automakers like Ford, BMW and Volkswagen with mass produced turbocharged vehicles, Nissan is adapting the World Class VQ engine to accept boost. The current VQ37HR engine, found in the Nissan 370Z and Infiniti G37 models, is an outstanding piece of engineering, however in order to get the most it has to bee run higher up in the RPM band which burns an excessive amount of gas. So the Japanese automaker is reportedly experimenting with downsizing and turbocharging the VQ as a means of efficiency. Hopefully there will be a few tricks from the the GT-R built in or even a twin turbo 3-something
The German luxury car builder, Mercedes Benz unveiled their Concept Fascination back a t the 2008 Paris Motor Show. What was once boasted as nothing more than a design study focused on bringing back the shooting brake, is now rumored to be going into production as another iteration of the new Mercedes Benz E-Class for 2010. With this final addition, the E lineup has now grown to 5 body styles: saloon, coupe, convertible, estate and now shooting brake. The estate/coupe combination should make its official debut some time in 2011.
Under the hood, the engine lineup will be the same as the E-Class Coupe. Power plants will range from four and six cylinder engines to a mighty V8 for the top of the line E-Class Shooting Brake. One thing is for certain, with this kind of sports inspired body, a high performance version will almost definitely be an option.
Until then we will just have to wait for the wagon to be revealed in Frankfurt, and for the convertible to come sometime after. When all of the new E-Class cars finally do make their debuts, Mercedes Benz is going to have a whole lot of attractive cars to get rid of.
Ok this is a big “if” rumor. If Pontiac survives the GM carmageddon that’s on the horizon, we may see a Firebird revival. Spreading the cost of the Camaro over another car, plus giving Pontiac an inexpensive way to boost sales, should be good enough for GM to reconsider a Firebird... but Pontiac has to survive first.
Rumors are going around that BMW has approved a two-seat speedster version of the Mini. Although the design will be different (including more angular design and rear tonneau cover,) underneath the skin it will likely share many components from the other models, including the 208 hp 1.6-liter engine from the JCW Mini.
Bugatti may have some big plans for the long-rumored sedan, which include a first showing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. 4WheelsNews is reporting the slow economy hasn’t stopped Bugatti from it’s sedan plans, but instead it actually may help Bugatti repeat history.
The new sedan is expected to be called the Royale and will possibly be limited to six units, just like the original. Ettore Bugatti intended to build twenty-five examples of his Type 41 (Royale), but the Great Depression limited production to less than one per year over the 1927 to 1933 run. So if this rumor is true, Bugatti may be once again introducing an ultra-exclusive sedan in a time when few will be able to afford it. The new Royale will likely borrow a version of the W16 engine from the Veyron, and it could be the world most expensive car considering the price should be well north of the Veyron’s $1.5 million retail price.
This kind of news always gets us excited, but we also have to be a little cautious. Earlier this year we were expecting something big from Bugatti at the Geneva Motor Show, and all we got was the Bleu Centenaire.
We’ve known Toyota has been working on a partnership with Subaru to bring back the Celica. But there has also been confirmation that plans were being delayed until at least 2012, if not indefinitely.
Now there’s a story coming out in next month’s L’Automobile Magazine that says the Celica will be here in 2010. The French publication says that this has been confirmed by Thierry Dombreval, vice president of sales and marketing of Toyota France.
We still are a little cautious about news of the traditionally frugal Toyota continuing plans for a sports sedan in unsure economic times (especially in addition to the rumored new hybrid MR2). But if Toyota is willing to take the risk on a new rear-drive car, we will be one its largest supporters.
Alright, time to travel back into the murky waters that is the Volkswagen Group’s lineup mash-up. Here’s what we do know: Audi will get a version of the Volkswagen BlueSport concept. How it fits into Audi’s family is the debate.
Audi has been using a codename R4 on a mid-engined project. The thought was that the R4 would be the Audi based off the BlueSport. This rumor itself was already pretty tricky, and was explained last month. Now Auto Express is using the codename R2 for the VW based roadster, which could move the playing field.
If plans for a R2 and R4 both exist then, it could mean multiple cars coming from both Porsche and Audi. Porsche is possibly getting a version of the BlueSport chassis that could go to a 914 revival. An earlier rumor pegged the R4 to share many pieces with the Porsche Boxster. So one possibility is that the R4/Boxster/Cayman could play big brother to the BlueSport/R2/914 chasis.
But all this is speculation also would mean that the Volkswagen Group is laying out a lot of money on new designs at a time when cash is tight. Plus there are plenty of questions still to be answered: Is there really room in the Audi lineup for a R2 and R4? How many chassises will Audi be utilizing? Is this just a case of one car going under two names?
Only time and Ritalin will give us the answer.
