Scion's->ke79 FR-S Tuner Challenge will pit three different - and talented auto builders - against one another to see who could build the ultimate custom-tuned FR-S. One of these tuners is Daniel Song from Orange County, California.

In his quest to build the winning FR-S, Song decided to center his program around a performance sports car that driving enthusiasts will come to enjoy. So he set about to build his take on a "no-nonsense, function built, raw, aggressive, and sinister race bred" sports car that he appropriately billed as the "FR-S GT."

His creation, together with the other custom tuned FR-S models that will be competing at the FR-S Tuner Challenge, will be on hand at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show->ke216. As a first time contestant to the Scion Tuner Challenge, Song is leaving no stones unturned with the FR-S GT. He's coming to impress, and by the looks and specs of the car, he did a splendid job in doing just that.

Exterior

Daniel Song certainly went balls-to-the-wall with his FR-S because the car's body alone comprises of a plethora of new components from some of the best specialty makers the industry has to offer. For starters, Song went and used Meguiar's 3M Carbon Dinoc vinyl on the FR-S' body while also using embossed effects courtesy of Daley Visuals.

From there, Song commissioned noted auto designer Jon Sibal to design the wide boy kit, the splitters, and the canards. With the designs on hand, Song called the fine folks of APR to build NACA hood ducts, formula GT3 mirrors, a rear air foil and upright stabilizer, and a rear spoiler with custom trunk mounts. Conversely, the new front lip, the side skirts, and the rear valance were all taken cared of by MV Designz.

Meanwhile, the headlights and taillights, as well as Scion and 86 emblems, have all been blacked out, while the antenna of the FR-S was replaced with the shark-fin variety. Other modifications on the car's body include a new custom intake inlet headlight and aerocatch hood latches.

The last piece of development on the FR-S GT's exterior are a new set of 18" SSR 3-piece Professor SP1 wheels with custom offset SST aluminum race lug nuts and Toyo Proxes 4 Plus tires.

Interior

To give meaning to his mission of turning the FR-S GT into a fully-fledged "race-bred" sports car, Daniel Song got down and dirty in customizing the interior to become as such. A full spec roll cage, an integrated harness bar, and a dimple-died aluminum floor mat from Garage Life were all installed and/or fitted into the car.

Song also made use of plenty of components from Sparco Competition, highlighted by a circuit-race bucket seat, a suede steering wheel and hub, a quick release steering system, a shift knob, and a four-point racing harness. From there, Song made sure to add some carbon fiber touches on the interior with custom components on the door panels, the radio delete trim panel, and the HVAC delete trim panel.

A push start ignition was also added, as well as a Kidde Auto fire extinguisher and bracket.

Last but certainly not least, the entire interior was refinished in matte black, giving it a cold and somewhat sinister presence.

Performance

Song understood that the real key to building a race-bred sports car lies in what he does under the FR-S GT's hood. Knowing that full well, Song enlisted Vortech to provide the heart of the engine enhancement. A Vortech V-3 H67 self-lubricated supercharger with its own billet impeller was installed. The program also carries a Vortech Maxiflow air-to-air frown mount charge cooler, an integrated oversized MAF housing, a compressor bypass valve, and a roto-molded intake air box.

Even the FR-S GT's radiator was changed to a Koyo Race version while the battery bracket kit and the battery itself were commissioned from Braille. A Billet Pro short shift kit is also part of the program. As for the clutch, that was replaced too, with Song opting to go for Clutch Master's FX300 Stage 3 clutch.

Suspension

Yet another part of the FR-S GT that received modifications from Song is the car's suspension. Instead of using the stock component, the OC-based tuner went and used suspension components from Air Runner, including an air suspension with KYB 4-dial dampening control, a 2-gallon black air tank, a 380C Viair chrome compressor, and a custom, one-off air management bracket.

Pricing

Don't expect Song's FR-S GT to be sold anytime soon, so pricing is out of the question.

Competition

Normally, we'd incorporate competing brands and their respective sports car models as key competitors of the FR-S, but in this case, the FR-S GT's competition is of its own kind, particularly John Toca's "Carbon Stealth" FR-S and Chris Basselgia's "minty FResh" FR-S.
