sedan

A sedan car is a four-door vehicle, with a separate hood covering the engine in the front, and a separate trunk for luggage at the rear — the achetypical 3-box car. However, other variations of the body style exist as well, including two-door and hatchback/fastback models.

This morning at the Detroit International Auto Show , Subaru has officially unveiled the car that every enthusiast has been waiting for, the next-generation WRX STI .

Unfortunately, it appears that Subaru has not fulfilled all the dreams of the Internet masses. The new car makes no major strides in terms of engine output or design, and a wagon variant is still nowhere to be found.

What the latest STI forgoes in engine changes, it more than makes up for in chassis redesign. With a stiffer chassis and a new Active Torque Vectoring system, this latest STI should set a new a benchmark for how a bargain hoonmobile should handle. As an added bonus, the new STI looks to change perceptions on interior build quality and refinement.

Does this new AWD rocket really have what it takes to make the faithful fans of this rally-bred machine happy?

Ever since 2011, rumors have been swirling that once the new-generation Impreza hits the market, Subaru will separate the Impreza and WRX models. Of course, both will share the same platform, but the WRX and the WRX STI versions will be radically modified and each part on it will be unique.

As no surprise, shortly after the WRX Concept was unveiled at the 2013 New York Auto Show, our spy photographers caught the production version testing around the Nürburgring race track. Now, after many testing sessions, teasers and speculations, the 2015 WRX made its world debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The model offers a new design language, a powerful four-cylinder engine — not as powerful as hoped though, as it was rumored it will deliver more than 300 horsepower — and, for the first time, the choice of two gearboxes: a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT.

Updated 02/14/2014: Subaru announced today prices for the 2014 WRX set to be put on sale this spring. Prices for the base WRX will start from $26,295 for the base version, but it can go up to $31,195 for the WRX Limited Edition.

Proving it’s more than just safe station wagons, Swedish car company Volvo is entering one of Australia’s toughest races, the V8 Supercar Series with its highly modified S60 sedan .

As Volvo teased earlier this week, the S60 is powered by a monstrous 5.0-liter V-8 kicking out 650 naturally aspirated horses and 487 pound-feet of tire-shredding torque. The result is a zero to 62 mph time of only 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 185 mph. The engine was developed by the famous Volvo tuner Polestar from Volvo’s existing 4.4-liter V-8 found in the S80 and XC90 . Polestar modified the aluminum block and bolted on new aluminum heads to help achieve a 10:1 compression ratio while eight individual throttle bodies carry E85 fuel to the cylinders.

Today the Volvo race team showed off their S60 racer for the first time by driving it across Australia’s most famous bridge and holding a press conference in its shadow. On Saturday, the team to hit the track at the Sydney Motorsport Park in a shakedown day before competing in the Clipsal 500 on March 1st though 2nd.

Volkswagen has been on a multi-year mission to sell more cars than any other company in the world. The next step in its ambitious plan involves making one of their larger European brands even more attractive. At the Geneva Motor Show in March, Volkswagen is rolling out the new Skoda VisionC Concept.

Designed as a concept study based around the Skoda Octavia sedan, the VisionC Concept is being created to demonstrate the future of Skoda design and visual aesthetic. All we currently have is this preview sketch, but we can see the design is a four-door coupe with sharp and aggressive lines. The squared off features and headlight detail are very reminiscent of Audi ’s newest vehicles.

We know that many vehicles will be produced using the general design language shown on the VisionC Concept, but we are as yet unaware if the actual concept car will be made into a road going model. The VisionC may become the new Octavia, or there may be a new swoopier model that is created much in the way Volkswagen has the CC and the Passat.

Check back here in March when the concept is officially unveiled in Geneva. We will have all the photos and details for you then.

Chevrolet Cruze

It’s no secret that General Motors has been working on a update for the hot selling Chevrolet Cruze. We’ve seen spy shots of camo-covered Cruzes before, but none have been so revealing as these.

Looking past the digital zebra print, it’s apparent the 2015 makeover will be fairly extensive. The windshield is more steeply raked, while the rear roof section gets a more coupe-like fall towards the C-pillars. The front fascia is much lower and pointed than before with a more aggressive stance. The larger, reshaped grille starts a belt line that runs over the headlights, through the finders, and circles around to the rear taillights. The exterior door handles have been repositioned further up, integrating within the belt line.

Out back, reworked taillights look more detailed, while the third brake light is been moved to the trunk lid in the from of an LED light bar. The rear fascia is more detailed as well with a black, non-functional spoiler at its base.

The interior of the 2015 Cruze is said to be much more upmarket with a new, large touchscreen and revamped multifunction steering wheel. Stitching and chrome accents abound on the instrument panel and then carry throughout the cabin. Also visible is an “Eco Mode” button, a voice command button, and a lane-departure activation switch. Park assist looks to be among the switchgear as well.

Unfortunately for U.S. buyers, the Cruze will likely go on sale in other countries a few months before production ramps up within the two U.S. plants. General Motor rolled out the current Cruze in the same manner in order to deplete dealer inventory of older models the Cruze was replacing.

BMW 3 Series Plug-In Hybrid

Our spy photographers have yet again captured the 3 Series Hybrid out in the wild – this time, with even less camo on. The recharging door just aft of the driver-side front tire is clearly visible. Even with the missing camo, the 3 still sports its “Hybrid Test Vehicle” sticker on the driver’s door; eliminating all doubt of this car’s future green intentions.

Like we said before , not much is know about the hybrid system that BMW is employing here, but our best guess is something similar to what the X5 eDrive was testing with: a turbocharged four-cylinder paired to a 95-horsepower electric motor and advanced Li-ion battery pack. In the X5 application , the combo was good for a 0 to 60 time of less than seven seconds. An all-electric range of roughly 20 miles and a reported average of 62 mph combined when both systems worked simultaneously.

The 3 Series Hybrid would likely outperform its SUV brethren, as its lighter weight and lower center of gravity would help it achieve better fuel consumption numbers and better times around a track.

With all these pictures surfacing, it’s highly likely that BMW will bring a hybrid model to its wildly popular 3 Series lineup. Only time will tell, however. Stay tuned to TopSpeed for all the latest spy photos and info as it becomes available.

Koenigsegg Agera R BLT

I have come to know and love Tesla , though I try to keep our love affair under wraps for the most part. It’s not fair for myself — a journalist — to attest my love for a brand, but in this case, I feel I am in good enough company to let that little tidbit of information out.

The reason I feel so comfortable doing so is that Christian von Koenigsegg — yeah, the dude who some of the most bad-ass supercars in the world are named after — wears his love for the electric car manufacturer on his shoulder. Yup, he actually drives a Tesla Model S every day. Let that sink in for a second; the guy could drive any one of his hypercars to work, but he prefers his Model S.

He went on to say that he feels that about 80 percent of the cars sold by the year 2020 will be electric.

An added twist to this story is that when Koenigsegg was in the market to snatch up the now-defunct Saab , its intentions were to manufacture and sell all-electric cars. This may have led to Mr Koenigsegg singing a different tune had that gone through.

No matter what way you slice it, it is pretty cool to have him give Tesla the ol’ hat tip.

Last week Tesla undertook a world-record continental crossing with what it dubbed the Tesla Cross Country Rally. The goal was simple; take a pair of Model S sedans from Los Angeles to New York while spending an absolute minimum of time charging by using the new Supercharger network.

As if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, the team decided to take a northern route during what has been one of this country’s worst winters in decades. Along the journey the team encountered temperatures well below zero, closed interstates, and more than a foot of snow in some places.

Despite all these challenges, a full seventy-six hours after leaving Los Angeles, the team rolled into New York City. The total trip was 3,427 miles and the team only spent 15 hours and 57 minutes tied to a charger.

The going was tough enough that one of the gasoline powered support vehicles for the trip suffered a breakdown.

I was part of a cross country record attempt last year with Audi , and I can attest that this type of journey is anything but easy. It is a grueling punishment of your mental and physical health. Aside from the sleep deprivation, sitting in a car for that length causes cramps, muscle spasms and many other maladies.

I personally applaud Tesla for their outstanding effort.

If you would like to see some of the crazy weather they traveled through, as well as see a few more facts about the journey, click the play button on the video we have above.

It has become abundantly obvious to the majority of the world that we are running out of oil, and by proxy, out of gasoline. With every automaker scrambling to find a way to get cleaner and greener cars, the are surprisingly few marques trying to perfect the art of alternative fuels.

Honda is on the cutting edge of alternative propulsion. Cars like the FCX Clarity prove that Honda has that ability, guts and know how to produce and sell a production version of a hydrogen-powered vehicle.

Honda is taking that same drive and innovation to its Civic line, and now you can purchase a new 2014 Honda Civic Natural Gas. With an updated exterior, and better nationwide availability, the Civic Natural Gas is proving that you don’t necessarily need gasoline to get your motor running.

Learn about the new Civic Natural Gas and where you can buy one below in our review.

The Honda Civic is a perennial favorite among buyers and auto writers. With consistently great build quality, competent handling and bullet-proof reliability, it is hard to beat. Honda had a slight hiccup with the 2012 model, but it revised everything again for the 2013 standard sedans .

Now that we have hit 2014 and the Chicago Auto Show , Honda has decided to updates all its coupes and special models. That means we have a brand-new Civic Hybrid to talk about.

The 2014 Hybrid gets the freshly upgraded exterior styling of its sedan siblings, and it gets even better fuel economy than last year as well. It even gets enhanced interior amenities with a new stereo, and the safety equipment has been improved as well.
