sedan

A sedan car is a four-door vehicle, with a separate hood covering the engine in the front, and a separate trunk for luggage at the rear — the achetypical 3-box car. However, other variations of the body style exist as well, including two-door and hatchback/fastback models.

The redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-Class is still nearly six months away from arriving in U.S. dealerships, and official pricing has yet to be announced, but thanks to a full order guide that surfaced on the Internet recently, we are able to have a look at the vehicle’s packages and optional features.

Before we dive into the details, we will remind you that the C-Class will be offered in three version in the United States. The C300, which is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, will be sold in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, while the C400, with the brawnier 3.0-liter V-6 under the hood, will come with all-wheel drive only.

According to Benz Report, the 4MATIC version of both the C300 and C400 will show up in Mercedes-Benz dealerships in September, while the C300 with rear-wheel drive will roll-out a bit later, sometime in the first quarter of 2015.

Two packages will be available for the C300 and C300 4MATIC in addition to the standard model, Sport and Luxury. The latter, which is standard on the C400, is priced at $2,500, while the former, which is exclusive to the C300, costs $650.

The more expensive bundle will add AMG-like exterior styling and 18-inch AMG wheels, sport suspension and perforated discs for the front brakes. Inside, Sport Package highlights will include sports seats, a flat-bottom sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals and a Black Ash, open-pore wood trim. The Luxury Package, on the other hand, will only bring a more comfortable suspension, a set of 17-inch multi-spoke wheels, a different front grille and a choice of Burl Walnut trim or Linder wood for the cabin.

With the long-wheelbase version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class already underway, it appears that Daimler is set to revive the Maybach nameplate for an even longer version of the luxury -packed limousine.

According to Reuters, the Maybach-branded Mercedes will be quite a land yacht, sporting a wheelbase that’s 20 cm (7.9 inches) longer than that of the extended version of the S-Class .

The added length and luxury amenities, such as "soft-touch leather and bespoke materials", will also reflect in the vehicle’s price tag, which is expected to be "more than double the €165,000 ($228,000) asking price" of the current Mercedes-Benz S600.

However, don’t expect for the Maybach to fetch more than $400,000 before options in the U.S., as the aforementioned price applies to the European-spec version — it will be lower Stateside. Nonetheless, the limousine will sit between the Bentley Mulsanne and the Rolls-Royce Phantom price-wise.

If you’re thinking that this all sounds familiar, it should, because the Maybach will likely be closely related to the Pullman that we’ve caught testing. The Pullman, according to the source, is actually even longer yet at nearly 260 inches, and will be aimed at heads of state and oligarchs, especially in its nearly $1 million armor-plated version.

We will find out more about the Pullman later this year, as the vehicle is scheduled to be showcased during both the Los Angeles and the Guangzhou auto shows this fall.

Well now, it seems the Volkswagen is doing its best to win hearts and minds the world over. Fresh of off news about the new Golf SportWagen , spy shots of a Golf R wagon and the announcement of the uber-awesome Golf R400 , Automotive News is reporting that the swanky New Midsize Coupe concept from the Beijing show will make it to production as a competitor the Mercedes-Benz CLA .

If you missed the news, the NMC concept is a swoopy, four-door, coupe-style car that is based on the Jetta. Think of how the CC is just a pretty Passat, and you get the basic idea.

The overall design is very reminiscent of the CC with its sloping rear profile and frameless doors. Currently the Jetta is a serviceable machine in the style department, but it is far from the prettiest thing on the road. I can see Volkswagen grabbing some conquest buyers with a more stylish vehicle. The real question is how much cannibalization of the Jetta will occur.

We have no confirmed details on this machine, but expect Jetta engine and transmission options to be carried over exactly, with a slightly higher price premium for the nicer sheet metal.

As you may recall, at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show we had our first look at the Mercedes-Benz C-Class L , the most recent and longest member of the brand-new C-Class family. The sedan will go on sale later this year, but, to our disappointment, it won’t make it to the U.S., being a China-exclusive model.

Today, a report coming from Autocar says the C-Class lineup is set to expand even more, with a performance-oriented sedan to join the ranks next year. This time we’re not talking about yet another AMG-prepped midsize, but a vehicle that will fill the large gap between the C400 model and the brawny C63 AMG that should break cover later in 2014.

Details are scarce at the time of this writing, but the aforementioned source states the new model will be launched with the C450 AMG Sport moniker and with a 3.0-liter V-6 engine under the hood. In order for the sportier C-Class to bridge the wide gap between the 329-horsepower C400 and the 450-horsepower (estimated) C63 AMG , the Germans will increase the V-6’s output to about 372 horses.

As the name suggests, the C450 is not an official AMG model, but it’s being developed in collaboration with the company’s performance arm. It appears that the C450 AMG Sport will also be offered in an optional 4MATIC configuration, which is very likely to cross the Pond into North American dealerships.

The development of the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge is inching closer and closer to production. At the Beijing Auto Show , we got a clearer picture of where Infiniti stood with the development of the car when it announced that it had already built and track tested a prototype version of the concept and that it had officially become an engineering feasibility study.

We’re trying not to be too excited, but really, how can you not be, right?

According to Infiniti, the Q50 Eau Rouge prototype is moving further along in its testing, having already done on-track dynamics testing at the Millbrook Proving Ground with four-time Formula One champion and Infiniti’s Director of Performance Sebastian Vettel at the center of all the testing.

It doesn’t get any better than that for Infiniti having Vettel part of the development of the Q50 Eau Rouge. But Vettel’s involvement is just one aspect of the overall scope of the process that leads to the production model of the vehicle. Apparently, Infiniti is also planning to refine and test out the car’s aerodynamic performance, as it announced that the prototype has been dropped by 15 to 20 mm (0.59 to 0.78 inches) and this has shown better under-car airflow, but they think they can do even better with flat, under-car panels.

Some people might scoff at the time and money Infiniti is spending on the developing the Q50 Eau Rouge. But people have to understand what the car means to the company. After all, you only need to look at Infiniti’s parent company, Nissan, and its GT-R to understand what it would do for Infiniti if the Q50 Eau Rouge lives up to all the hype.

This model could very well end up being Godzilla’s carbon-fiber-clad and better-dressed cousin. So, yeah, it’s a pretty big deal that Infiniti is doing all it can to ensure that every development phase of the Q50 Eau Rouge is given full and undivided attention.

"Taking the decision to build and develop a prototype of the Q50 Eau Rouge concept following the positive response we received in Detroit and Geneva, was a logical next step for us in our evaluation process," said Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited.

Once its completed, the high-performance sedan is being tipped as the crown jewel of Infiniti’s lineup, one that features the very best of the GT-R’s monstrous power and the technology of Formula One combined into one.

If a couple of weeks ago we were talking about how the new, beefed up C63 AMG will also get coupe, convertible and wagon versions , now we have to refocus our attention on the regular C-Class model and its brand-new family member, the C-Class Long.

Specifically developed for the Chinese market, where additional legroom is highly appreciated, the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Long broke cover at the Beijing Auto Show , the country’s most important automotive event for the year.

We’re not at all shocked that the elongated C-Class showed up this month, given that the vehicle has been confirmed since last year, but we’re pleasantly surprised to find out that the China -exclusive model is a full 80 mm (3.1 inches) longer than the standard version. For the record, Audi] added only 60 mm (2.4 inches) to the A4 when it created the A4L.

As the model kept its overhangs intact, the entire length of the C-Class L sits in a 2,920-mm (115-inch) long wheelbase, giving it a longer wheelbase than the regular Mercedes-Benz E-Class . The additional room the longer wheelbase spawns in the cabin is obviously available in the rear compartment, where passengers will be able to sit more comfortably and stretch their legs further before hitting the front seats.

Speaking of which, the front passenger’s seat can be adjusted from the rear for further legroom or to compensate for the extra 25 mm (1 inch) added to the rear bench.

The Germans have yet to reveal too many details, but they did mention the C-Class Long will be offered with two different exterior designs. The tame model will come with the classic front grille with the company’s star mounted on the hood, while the more aggressive version, dubbed the "Sport Sedan," will carry numerous AMG body components, including a front apron, sill panels and a diffuser-like rear skirt.

There’s no specific word on what engines will be motivating the C-Class L, but the company said the base model will get 156 horsepower, while the range-topping version can be equipped with a unit that delivers as much as 367 horsepower. This means that there will be at least a C 180L, which will cover the 156-horsepower version. As for the 367-horsepower version, the only Chinese-spec engine close to that is the 360-horsepower, 2.0-liter from the CLA45 AMG, and it is doubtful that this engine will be in a long-wheelbase cruiser, like the C-Class L.

BMW is continuing to enjoy great success in the United States. But as growing sales and local prosperity always come with high demand, the Germans need to find ways to boost North American production, especially when it comes to their best-selling 3 Series sedan .

BMW already has a facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The plant assembles X5 and X6 SUVs and is about to have its production capacity increased by 50 percent when it welcomes a brand new vehicle, the larger X7 .

Since squeezing 3 Series production in South Carolina is out of the question, BMW is planning on building a second factory in North America, Bloomberg reports, adding that the manufacturer has narrowed the list of locations within the United States and Mexico, with at least two sites south of the border still being considered.

There’s no indication as to where BMW might decide to assemble the 3 Series in North America, but Mexico sounds more likely due to a number financial considerations that also include less expensive workforce.

A timetable for this decision is not available at the time of this writing, but stay tuned to TopSpeed for further information.

Volkswagen seems to be shaking that bland, boring vibe it’s currently got going on, swapping it in favor for style and attitude in the German automaker’s latest concept just revealed at the Beijing Auto Show . Known as the Midsize Coupe Concept, the car is shorter than the Jetta but wider than the CC, , making for a much sportier appearance from the onset.

Skipping right to the good part, the VW Coupe Concept lives up to its sporty appearance with the familiar 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder banging away 217 horsepower on its way to a 6.5-second run to 62 mph. What’s more, it achieves an estimated 34 mpg while cruising the highway, and its top speed is listed at 152 mph.

Besides its size and sporty character, the VW concept sports some new design cues both inside and out. The three-bar grille’s chrome bars continue into the LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights, while a detail-rich lower air dam and side grilles pull in extra air and extra attention. Around to the side are large 20-inch, multi-colored wheels wrapped in performance 245-series rubber.

There is quite a rumble of excitement surrounding this concept, though VW hasn’t announced any official plans to build it. We do know the automaker plans to incorporate some of the design and styling cues into its product lineup in the future, but whether the Midsize Coupe Concept will actually live has yet to be seen. Beyond it getting a green light for production, we’ll have to further worry about its entry into the U.S. as VW has a tendency to hold back the performance-oriented products from burning rubber on our shores.

With a market that grows larger by the year, China is one of the most important automobile battlefields nowadays, and it’s no surprise that the 2014 Beijing Auto Show hosted so many important debuts, including Mercedes’ upcoming BMW X6 fighter , the Lexus NX or Lincoln’s MKX Concept crossover.

Likewise, BMW went to Beijing to showcase an array of vehicles, hoping to gain more leverage over its luxury competitors. But besides introducing already launched cars and a couple of special models, including the 7 Series Horse Edition , the Germans also debuted the Vision Future Luxury concept , which hints at the manufacturer’s next step in regard to large sedans .

As with most of its concepts , BMW declined to offer any information as to what to what kind of production model the Vision Future Luxury will spawn, but it makes a lot of sense for us to think about the next-generation 7 Series . Additionally, and based on previous reports, this study is also a forerunner for the upcoming 9 Series — the BMW-badged executive that will take on the Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman .

Toyota is turning up the fun factor with the heavily refreshed 2015 Camry, making it more exciting to drive, quieter inside, and more appealing to look at. A new interior includes better materials and even a handy wireless phone charger in the center console. This update comes only two years after the Camry’s last refresh, but in its quest to excite customers with a more upmarket sedan, Toyota is staying poised on its toes, jabbing at the competition.

Though much of the car’s underpinnings are not new, the car will have a fresh feel and character. Revised suspension components make the Camry a better handler while upgraded insulation keeps NVH levels to a minimum. Outside, every body panel except for the roof has been replaced in a effort to liven up the Camry’s demeanor.

While the Camry gets a new look, the greasy bits under the hood will carry over. The 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder and the 3.5-liter V-6 return, as does the six-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid trim carries over as well, utilizing the same Atkinson Cycle 2.5-liter I-4 mated to an E-CVT. All three engines are good performers and get impressive fuel economy numbers, though none of them will be setting lap time records or leaving burnout marks up Interstate on-ramps.

The Camry might not be setting records around a racetrack, but it sure has set plenty of sales records, leading the pack as the best selling sedan for the last 12 years. Toyota has sold nearly a million Camrys in the last two years alone. So is messing with success worth it? Click past the jump for all the details on the new 2015 Camry and decide for yourself.
