First shown at the 2000 Paris Auto Show, the Skoda Fabia Combi boasts 63% more carrying space than its hatchback sister (it has a potential boot capacity of 1,225l) while offering the same level of handling. This estate has a wide range of engines and is available in three trim levels - Classic, Comfort and Elegance. Power steering, driver's airbag and engine immobiliser are standard on all models.

ENGINES

The Skoda Fabia Combi has a wide range of engines: four petrol and two diesel. Almost all petrol engines fulfil the strictest EU 4 emissions standard, which will apply in EU countries from 2005. The car can be also supplied with engines that comply with the valid EU 2 standard. Diesel engines conform to EU 3.

1.4 LITRE ENGINES

The basic power unit for the Combi is the 1.4-litre petrol engine, which produces 50kW/68bhp and a maximum torque of 120Nm at 2,500rpm. The maximum speed is 164km/h and the average consumption is 7.1l of 95 RON petrol per 100km. The knocking sensor permits the use of cheaper 91 RON petrol, with only a nominal reduction in performance. The engine complies with the EU 4 standard, but an EU 2 version is also available.

The other 1.4-litre engine differs from the previous one in that it has two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. It produces 55kW/75bhp and a maximum torque of 126Nm at 3,800rpm. The maximum speed is 170km/h and average consumption is 6.7l/100km. In combination with automatic transmission, this engine conforms to EU 3.

55 KW PETROL ENGINE

The Skoda Fabia Combi is also available with the 55kW petrol engine and automatic transmission. It is a four-speed automatic transmission with a hydrodynamic converter. In third and fourth gear, the converter has a clutch lock-up to transmit the drive force so there is no loss of performance. The automatic transmission electronic system works on the "fuzzy logic" principle: gear changes adapt to both road conditions and driving style.

SPORT VERSION

The 1.4-litre power unit is also available in a sportier version. It develops a maximum of 74kW/101bhp. With this engine, the Combi can reach a maximum speed of 186km/h and accelerate from 0-100km/h in 11.6s. The average fuel consumption is 7.1l/100km.

2-LITRE ENGINE

The top power unit is the 2-litre engine with 85kW/115bhp, producing a maximum torque of 170Nm at 2,400rpm. With this engine, the Combi can reach a maximum speed of 197km/h and accelerate from 0-100km/h in 10.1s. This engine complies with the strictest EU 4 standard and has an average consumption of 7.8l/100 km on 95 RON petrol.

SDI DIESEL ENGINE

The Skoda Fabia Combi gives the customer the choice of two diesel engines with the latest direct injection, both have a displacement of 1.9l.

The SDI engine produces 47kW/64bhp and a maximum torque of 125Nm in the range of 1,600 to 2,800rpm. The maximum speed is 158km/h and average consumption is 4.8l/100km.

TDI DIESEL ENGINE

The top diesel power unit is the new TDI engine with high-pressure direct injection and pump nozzle system. It delivers 74kW/101bhp and supplies its greatest torque of 240Nm at 1,800 to 2,400rpm. It has a maximum speed of 187km/h and acceleration from 0-100km/h in just 11.6s. The average consumption is 4.9l/100km.
