Smart->ke83 UK is celebrating the beginning of the new year with a new special edition Fortwo->ke1744. Called the ForTwo Lightshine Edition, this new model emphasizes the enhancements to the latest new generation smart Fortwo and reaffirms the cdi model as the CO2 world champion for combustion engine vehicles.

"The smart ForTwo Lightshine Edition epitomizes the values of smart, the model offering an unrivaled fusion of eye-catching style, comfort and environmental compatibility in a fun-to-own and drive package," said Gary Savage, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"Based on the cdi, the ForTwo Lightshine Edition demonstrates how the innovative brand continually evolves to meet customers’ requirements, the special edition being the perfect choice for today’s car buyers who wish to drive something that is both unique and entertaining but who do not wish to compromise on economy, practicality and affordability."

Exterior and Interior

On the exterior, the Lightshine Edition is distinguished by light green matte body panels, LED daytime running lights, color coded headlamp bezels, "lightshine" badging, and a new set of wheels in 3-double spoke design and an exclusive paint finish.

For the interior Smart is offering a new upper dashboard and glove box design along with improved materials and new fabric patterns. There is also a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel with paddleshift gear change and floor mats with the "lightshine" logo.

The list of technologies includes a new larger touch screen, CD/DVD/SD functionality, and iPod interface.

The Engine

As far as special editions go, brands typically don't supply them with anything but exterior and interior modifications, which means that the standard cdi engine is still hiding underneath the hood of the ForTwo Lightshine. This engine is mated to a softtip transmission and produces 54hp. This isn't necessarily a bad thing considering this engine only emits 86g/km CO2 – the lowest figure in the world for a combustion engine car.

Prices

The Smart Fortwo Lightshine Edition will go on sale at a price of £11,405. There will only be 86 units produced.

The Competition

On the US market, one of the most successful competitors for the Smart ForTwo is the new Toyota iQ. It is offered with two engines choices: Toyota's Optimal Drive 1.0-liter VVT-i engine delivering 68hp and the 1.33-liter Dual VVT-i engine delivering 98hp. These figures dominate the power supplied by the ForTwo, so we can't imagine anyone would opt for the Smart, special edition or not. The iQ is even cheaper than the ForTwo with a sale price of just £10,158.
