Competitors

Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 starts out at £9,960 ($15,161), which makes it significantly more expensive than the smart fortwo Edition 21. The 500 Pop – the base model – comes fitted with an 875 cc TwinAir engine that hits the pavement with 85 horsepower. That’s slightly more than the smart and iQ, but still only good for modest performance numbers. The 500 does. however, have significantly more interior room than both the iQ and fortwo.

Toyota iQ

Known as Toyota iQ – known as the Scion iQ in the U.S. – is priced from £10,995 ($16,736), making it significantly more expensive than the smart Edition 21. It comes standard with a 1-liter engine with a miniscule 67 horsepower, which crawls it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 11.6 seconds. But, it is good for an incredible 64.2 mpg combined.

Smart History

Smart is a small Daimler subdivision specialized in developing microcars. It was established in 1994 and has only two major models: fortwo and forfour. Between 2003 and 2006, the company also produced a special smart roadster, but only 2,000 units were built. As of 2006, the company started to develop its first electric model: a smart fortwo electric drive.
