With a tuning firm like Carlsson->ke1696, you can always expect a number of surprises.

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show->ke228, the German tuner has unveiled a race edition for a car you normally wouldn't associate the word “race” with: the smart fortwo.

Aerodynamically, the fortwo Race Edition comes chock-full with new components, including a modified body kit, a new set of LED daytime running lights, a sports exhaust system, an in-house sports suspension that drops the car's height by 15 mm (0.59 inches) on the front and 30 mm (1.18 inches) on the rear. Finally, Carlsson also fitted the compact car with a new set of 17-inch one-piece alloy wheels.

Since the car is a "race edition", Carlsson just had to make improvements on the fortwo's performance numbers. But thanks to some fine German engineering, Carlsson was able to drive up the output of the car's 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine from the standard 84 horsepower and 88 pound-feet of torque all the way up to 112 horsepower and 116 pound-feet of torque.

With the upgrades in tow, the fortwo Race Edition can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.9 seconds with a top speed of 96 mph, 6 mph faster than the stock fortwo.
