special editions

Special Editions and limited production cars. Those cars usually offer packaged options and interior trims to celebrate special events such as model anniversary, movie release, celebrity signature or co-branding. They usually come up a few month to a year before the car get a more serious facelift

There’s nothing like special-edition MX-5 s, but in the U.S., we so rarely get a crack at them. Another non-U.S.-bound, special-edition MX-5 is this Sport Venture model — this model will also be available on Mazda5 and Mazda2 .

The Mazda MX-5 Sport Venture starts off with your choice of two all-new colors — Titanium Flash and Chrystal Blue Mica — bright-silver mirrors, bright alloy wheels and exterior badges.

On the inside, this special model gets a high-performance navigation system with a 6.1-inch display screen and Bluetooth connectivity to help set it apart from the rest of the MX-5 lineup. It also includes a stone leather interior with heated sport seats.

Under the hood, the MX-5 Sport Venture is available with a 1.8-liter four-pot with 126 PS (124 horsepower) in its soft-top and hard-top variants, or an optional 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 160 PS (158 horsepower) in the hard-top model. Sure, that’s not a ton of power, but the MX-5 never has been about raw power.

The price for this special-edition MX-5 starts at £18,995 ($31,170 at the current exchange rates).

If exclusivity is your fancy, then a 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo might suit your needs. But if that level of exclusivity isn’t exclusive enough, then the kind folks at Porsche have an answer: Porsche Exclusive.

That’s right, contact Porsche and for the right price, they’ll build your sports car almost any way you like it through their in-house customizing division. Case in point, this 2014 911 Turbo painted in a unique shade dubbed Lime Gold Metallic. The paint, however is only the starting point with this car. Blacked-out bi-xenon headlights and clear taillights, along with a deeper tint on the windows help move this 911 further away from normalcy.

Inside the story is much the same. The owner wanted everything finished in a deep chocolate brown contrasted by seats finished in the same Lime Gold Metallic hue the exterior is treated to. Talk about melting in your mouth…

Porsche will happily take your custom order with the help of two U.S. salesmen – one on each coast – who’s sole job is helping Porschephiles make their German sports car or SUV a personalized statement of their individualized taste.

Mechanically, this 911 Turbo is bone stock. Its 3.8-liter, twin-turbo flat-six still produces a monstrous 520 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque sent to all four wheels. Zero to 60 mph times are laughably quick at 3.2 second, while the quarter-mile will likely scare you as the 3,500-pound car rockets past the line in a hair’s breath over 10 seconds. Phenomenal.

We’ve already shown you the 2014 Dodge Charger SRT and Chrysler 300 SRT Satin Vapor Editions, and now we present the last of the special edition trio, the 2014 Dodge Challenger SRT Satin Vapor Edition.

Just like the other two Mopars, the Challenger is left mechanically stock with this appearance package, but that’s not a bad thing. Its classic 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 (That’s a 392 for you cubic-inch guys) sends a raucous 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Zero to 60 and quarter mile times remain the same at 4.4 seconds and 12.8 Seconds at 115 mph, respectively.

The differences here are only skin deep. Unique 20-by-9-inch forged aluminum split five-spoke wheels get a black satin chrome finish with massive red Brembo calipers hugging the huge vented rotors just behind. Satin-black mirrors and a satin-black fuel door stand out, while grey "392 HEMI" badges remind on-lookers of what evil lurks under the long, double-scooped hood. And just like the other two, the Challenger comes with its own set of unique exterior colors: Bright White, TorRed, Header Orange, and Graphite.

Charcoal-colored Nappa leather seats with ultra-suede inserts, along with the instrument cluster treated with a mini-carbon bezel help set the interior apart from lesser Challenger SRTs.

Adding the Satin Vapor Edition package to a new Challenger will cost and extra $1,700 beyond the SRT’s $40,485 MSRP and it will be in showrooms the second quarter of this year.

The Hyundai Veloster continues to grow up right before our eyes. First was the Turbo model, then came the R-Spec , and now Hyundai has introduced the RE:FLEX Edition, which it is limiting to only 3,000 units. Sure, it does not have the performance credentials of the other two variants, but it does add all sorts of goodies to the up-and-coming hatchback .

The RE:FLEX Edition starts off by adding in projector headlights with LED accents, LED taillights, a set of 18-inch alloys with a PVD chrome finish, chrome hood accents and door handles, some red and black "RE:FLEX Edition" badges, and a set of fog lights. The mods are not overwhelming by any means on this new special edition, but they are just enough to really make it pop, particularly the rims and door handles.

Buyers can choose from five colors, one of which is exclusive to the RE:FLEX model. These colors include Ice Pearl (exclusive to the RE:MIX), Century White, Vitamin C, Ultra Black and Boston Red. I am not a huge fan of white cars, but that Ice Pearl is pretty sharp.

Don’t go thinking the mods stop there. Nope, Hyundai then moved its focus to the cabin where it added in the Style Package, which includes piano-black accents, thumping 450-watt audio system with eight speakers, leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, alloy pedals and auto-up driver-side window. Also included are RE:FLEX Edition floor mats. Yeah, there’s nothing exclusive inside the cabin, but these extra goodies help make buying the whole package an easier pill to swallow.

Under its hood, the Veloster RE:FLEX gets the typical 1.6-liter, four-cylinder that produces just 138 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. Fortunately, Hyundai did add one cool feature to the drivetrain, and that’s the six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. Despite the addition of the EcoShift DCT, the Veloster RE:MIX is still god-awful slow with an estimated 0-to-60 time in excess of 10 seconds. I think it’s about time to scrap the 1.6-liter engine in favor of the 2.0-liter from the 2014 Elantra Sport.

Hyundai did not release a price on this model yet, but expect about a $4,000 premium on top of the base Veloster price.

Here in the U.S., we are limited to the E350 and E550 in terms of E-Class Coupes from Benz, but Japan has one extra model that we do not get here in the states, the E250 Coupe. This entry-level E-Class Coupe features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-spot that cranks out 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

For Japanese customers that want a little extra something from their base E250, you can now opt for a Special Edition model that will be limited to just 100 units. On the outside, there are two color options, as 80 of said models are painted Polar White and the remaining 20 units are coated in Fire Opal. On top of the special paint, this E250 Special Edition also gets 18-inch, twin-spoke AMG wheels and the AMG Sport Package. For an extra ¥200,000 — about $2,000 at the current exchange rates — buyers can also add in a body kit that includes skirts all the way around, and front and rear spoilers.

Inside the E250 Special Edition it features a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Bengal Red interior on the Polar White model and Natural Beige on the Fire Opal model.

This package checks in at ¥7.12 million — roughly $71,000 — which is a ¥430,000 ($4,200) increase over the base E250. Not too bad.

Sports cars continue to infiltrate the silver screen in superhero movies, and now it is the Corvette Stingray ’s turn to have a taste of Hollywood fame. In the new "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" movie that is due out on April 4th, Black Widow — one of the many S.H.I.E.L.D. superheros — will drive an all-black 2014 Corvette Stingray .

There are no specifics on this deep, gloss-black `Vette, but it will be on display at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show . Unfortunately, the stunning and dangerous Black Widow herself will not be there. But, Chevy will be passing out a limited-edition Captain America comic book to commemorate the collaboration of Marvel and the Stingray.

On top of the gloss-black paint job, the initial images of the Black Widow Stingray show a set of black rims that help complete this the package. Stay tuned for more details on the 2014 Corvette Stingray Black Widow, but don’t look for a special edition model in dealers, as I’m pretty sure this car is for the movies only.

The Charger SRT is one of the sickest sedans available today, there is no question about that. But some buyers just need a little extra aesthetic oomph to make them happy. Well, SRT was happy to cater to these discerning buyers by releasing an all-new Satin Vapor Edition at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show .

There are no performance mods under the hood, so expect the Charger SRT to carry the same 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that gets down with 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of twist. You also get the same 23 mph on the highway, thanks to the active valve exhaust system and Fuel Saver Technology — a mode that mechanically and electrically shuts down four of the eight cylinders.

What this new package does net you is a ton of aesthetic upgrades, including 20-by-9-inch aluminum wheels in a split-five-spoke design and coated in Black Satin Vapor Chrome, a Satin Black Super Bee tail graphic, a Satin Black roof and center sections on the hood, Satin Black mirrors and spoiler, grey "392 HEMI badges," and red Brembo brake calipers. Buyers can choose from four available colors with this package: Bright White, TorRed, Header Orange and Graphite.

SRT didn’t just update the exterior either, as the inside received a healthy dose of updates to go along with the upgraded exterior. These updates include a Nappa leather seats with ultra-suede inserts for superior softness and a Uconnect Media Center with an 8.4-inch LED touchscreen.

This package will set you back an extra $2,330 on the MSRP of the Charger SRT, which totals out to a starting price of $46,715. It’ll hit showrooms in the second quarter of 2014.

Audi’s RS models represent the pinnacle of speed and performance. Every enthusiast knows that anything wearing the RennSport (RS) designation is something special. The entire legacy of RS models began 20 years ago with the creation of the RS2 Avant. A project that was developed in partnership with Porsche , the RS2 features a 311 horsepower, turbocharged five-cylinder engine and quattro AWD in a wagon shell.

Fun Fact: The RS2 was actually manufactured by Porsche , not Audi, in the same factory that produced the bonkers Porsche 959 supercar. Even today, RS models are not assembled on standard assembly lines.

To pay homage to the car that started it all, Audi is releasing a special edition version of the RS4 Avant . The new RS4 Avant Nogaro Selection will make its debut at the Geneva Auto Show . This special edition is coated in Nogaro blue paint, reminiscent of the blue hue that the RS2 was sold in.

With quattro AWD, a monster V-8 and five doors, the RS4 Avant Nogaro Selection is the perfect successor to the machine that started it all.

Rolls Royce announced today the launch of a new Bespoke Waterspeed Collection that will be applied to a series of 35 Phantom Drophead Coupé . This new collection pays tribute to a legendary record established back on September 1st, 1937.

On that day, Sir Malcolm Campbell took a Bluebird K3 hydroplane boat powered by Rolls-Royce’s R-Type engine to a top speed of 126.32 mph on Lake Maggiore on the Swiss-Italian frontier. The next, day he did even better, as he sped the boat to 129.5 mph, breaking a five-year-old world water-speed record.

Of course, this amazing result was possible, thanks to the incredible Rolls Royce engine that powered the boat, and immediately after the record, Rolls Royce managed to reaffirm the superiority of its engines. What better way to honor the record than by building a bunch of expensive cars?

Updated 04/02/2014: Rolls Royce unveiled a new set of teaser images and new details on its new Waterspeed Collection that will be officially unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

For the second time in its run, the Volkswagen Amarok is getting the Canyon special-edition treatment.

This time around, the Amarok Canyon makes its way to the UK market, where it will be sold in very limited quantities.

It’s based on the Amarok’s Trendline trim, which means that the pickup will carry a host of new amenities. After all, you can’t be called a "special edition" without these exclusive digs, can you?

In this particular instance, some of the most noticeable upgrades given to the Amarok Canyon include a choice of three different body colors — Deep Black, Reflex Silver and Copper Orange — as well as an exterior that now has a matte-black roll cover, a load area protective coating and a set of 19-inch Cantera alloy wheels.

Moving inside, the Amarok Canyon’s cabin is a picture of high-class amenities, a surprising move considering that the pickup is more well-suited to get down and grimy. But there it is, a cabin that not only has heated leather seats, but those seats have also been dressed in fine Nappa and Vienna leather. Likewise, the steering wheel also gets the fine-leather treatment with orange stitching, while the rest of the cabin boasts of a 6-inch color touchscreen display, Bluetooth, front and rear parking sensors, and even privacy glass.

The Volkswagen Amarok Canyon takes its power from a 2.0-liter BiTDI engine that produces 180 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Those aren’t staggering numbers by any means, but enough to tow up to 7,054 pounds when the situation calls for it.

Only 350 units of the Amarok Canyon will be made available with 300 units earmarked with automatic transmission and a smaller set of 50 units for the manual transmission models. Expect to see a price tag of £30,720, which is about $51,000 based on current exchange rates.
