If you pay any attention to the TopSpeed Podcast , it will have become abundantly clear that we all like Porsches, and that the Cayman is top on our list for greatest driver’s cars. With the recent spy shots of the Porsche Cayman GT4 , we thought it was time we took a quick look at what makes the new potential Cayman special, and what it may mean for the rest of the Porsche family.

The birth of the Cayman was purely to fill a gap in Porsche’s lineup. It was an artificial car with artificial specifications. It had an engine, horsepower rating, top speed and price, that was exactly between the Boxster and the 911.

Thanks to its mid-engine design the Cayman has always felt like the better handling car, but Porsche refused to let it eclipse the power or performance of the 911. That seems until now, anyways. If the rumors about the GT4 Cayman are correct, it is positioned to be a better car than the base 911 Carrera , and potentially even the RWD Carrera S. If true, this could make the GT4 Cayman one of the best driver’s cars Porsche has ever created.

Ferrari will have five new cars to release in the next five years. And that number doesn’t include special editions, one-offs or anything like that. Doesn’t that sound super amazing?!

Well it does sound cool, but the news is not as big as it sounds. Ferrari has been on a yearly update schedule for quite a while now. That is simply their main business plan. Every year we get a revised model, and every four years, that model gets a heavy update. So we had things like the 599 GTB that became the 599 GTO . For the current lineup, we got the California, then the 458 , the FF came after that, and now we have the F12 Berlinetta . Then the cycle began its repeat with this year’s California T , the first major refresh. Next year should see a faster, modified version of the 458 arrive.

Ferrari is also still enforcing its 7,000-car maximum production limit, so there won’t be any more available than there already are. I think the really big takeaway from the announcement was the fact that Ferrari said they are still exclusively using V-8 and V-12 engines. There were rumors of something like a forced induction V-6 in a potential 458 update, so those are now basically dead. Ferrari also is not going to heavily invest into hybrid systems until the tech reaches a level they deem satisfactory.

As cool as the announcement of a new lineup of Ferrari’s seems, it’s actually just business as usual.

But what if Ferrari didn’t do business as usual? What if Ferrari decided it wanted to dramatically increase sales, and didn’t care so much about its brand prestige and message? It worked wonders for Porsche with models like the Cayenne .

Well we know it is coming, but we finally have the first solid, rolling evidence of the new four-cylinder Porsche Boxster .

Our spy photographers have captured a new mule doing the rounds at the Nürburgring. While there are no visual cues that this taped up convertible is only running on four-cylinders, our spies report that the exhaust note was anything but the traditional flat-six wail the usually exits the rear of the Porsche .

While there have been some rumors that the upcoming four-banger Porsche may be using a more traditional in-line design engine than a flat-four setup, our spies were only able to catch it for two laps, so there was not enough listening time accurately gauge the engine note.

Beyond the engine note, this appears to be a fairly standard Porsche Boxster with some tape and sensors collecting loads of fancy data for the German engineers to salivate over.

If you ever really doubted all of Porsche’s plans to bring a four-cylinder car to market, this should finally put all those doubts to rest. We may even get shots of the new four-banger Cayman soon as well.

Expect to see a full announcement before the end of the year, with an on-sale date early in 2015.

Once BMW confirmed that the coupe and convertible versions of the 1 Series would be marketed as the 2 Series , it was clear as daylight that a high performance M2 version is underway.

We’ve already rendered the successor to the cool 1M and strolled through plenty of details about the upcoming coupe, but the time has come to have a look at the real deal, as our skilled paparazzi have caught a prototype version of the M2 stretching its wheels somewhere in Germany .

Far from being a production-ready vehicle, this mule wears front and rear fascias similar to those seen on the M235i Coupe , but it appears to be fitted with wider fenders. Other details that highlight the vehicle’s ankle-biting nature are the M-style wheels wrapped in Michelin tires and the cross-drilled rotors paired with blue brake calipers.

As development continues, we’re expecting to see a more aggressive front bumper, a more pronounced rear diffuser, and quad exhaust pipes.

Naturally, the M2 will be the most powerful model in the 2-Series range, with its twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six to deliver around 400 horsepower. That’s about 80 horses more than the M235i, just enough to turn the M2 into a heck of a coupe.

With Toyota still mum on details, the much rumored Scion FR-S Sedan is still a mystery, but with plenty of speculation floating around it. The only thing we’re sure of is that the FR-S platform has been designed to support a sedan body style , as Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada revealed last year.

Up until now it was believed that the four-door would be powered by the same 2.0-liter boxer engine - good for 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, found in the coupe. Today, however, a report from Motor Trend quoted inside sources claiming the sedan will actually be sold with two different powertrains.

One of them will be a Subaru -sourced turbocharged, 2.0-liter unit found in the current-generation Legacy that’s tuned to deliver at least 300 horsepower and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The second model will reportedly gain a hybrid drivetrain, but actual details are unknown except for the fact that Toyota is working on a system "that’s compatible to Subaru’s boxer engine."

The conventional FR-S Sedan is expected to hit showrooms by mid-2016 with the hybrid variant featuring all-wheel-drive to arrive several months later. Compared to the FR-S coupe, the sedan will be 20 inches longer and 4 inches taller for improved interior room.

Rumors about an SRT -prepped Dodge Dart have been floating around ever since the compact sedan was unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show . But hopes of a successor for the Neon SRT-4 – phased out in 2005 – were somewhat crushed when SRT CEO Ralph Gilles said at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show that the brand has yet to find the right powertrain for the car.

Months have passed since we’ve heard anything about the Dart SRT, but it appears Dodge finally came to its senses and started working on a high performance compact. The good news came straight from the Fiat Chrysler alliance, who has just unveiled its massive five-year production plan.

With the SRT brand now back under Dodge , a host of new models will be built by 2018, with a high performance version of the Dart among them. Although the company has yet to confirm whether the compact will roll out with a SRT4 badge, it did say the vehicle will arrive in late 2016, right after the current-generation Dart gets its mid-cycle refresh.

The big news is that the brawny version of the sedan will be motivated by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, just like the Caliber SRT4 and the Neon SRT4, and sold with an all-wheel-drive configuration. Specific details aren’t available at the time of this writing, but expect for the Dart SRT to get a beefed-up 2.4-liter Tigershark engine tuned to deliver at least 260 horsepower.

Naturally, the sportier version of the Dart will also arrive with a host of visual upgrades (check out our rendering here ), including a pair aggressive bumpers, a larger apron intake, a rear diffuser, and probably a hood scoop. Under-the-skin improvements are likely to include a stiffer, performance-tuned suspension and additional driving modes.

When it comes to Japanese sports roadsters, there’s nothing better than the Mazda MX-5 . That much a lot of people can agree on. But while the MX-5’s status within this segment is undisputed, a host of automakers are determined to break in and make a name for themselves.

One of these companies is Honda and a few month ago at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show , we were introduced to the Honda S660 Concept , a prototype mini roadster that pays homage to the beloved 90’s model, the Honda Beat.

The Beat ended its production in 1996 but it seems that a successor in the S660 is expected to be produced in the near future. According to a report from Japanese site Response, Honda is preparing to build a production model of the S660 Concept at the company’s plant in Yokkaichi. Yes, that’s the same factory that built the Beat, so there’s a little case here of the Japanese automaker coming full circle with its entry-level sports roadster.

Honda reportedly expects to see a production model of the S660 next year so we’re looking forward to seeing how that one’s going to look and perform. There’s a chance that we’re not going to see anything bigger than a 660 cc, three-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces just 64 horsepower.

But we’re crossing our fingers that Honda opts for a full liter under the production S660. If anything, it deserves as much if its going to line up against the Mazda MX-5.

Is it possible that we could be seeing a lot more Ferrari models in dealerships in the near future? And by a lot more, we’re not just talking about the usual four or five models that Maranello has at any given point in time. Apparently, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne seems to think that more Ferrari models out on the streets would be an ideal scenario, or at least that’s what he told Autoblog recently.

According to Fiat-Chrysler’s main man, the Italian automaker is planning to launch a new car every year between now and 2018. Do the math and that’s five entirely new models that will be launched in the next five years. Marchionne didn’t dive into the specifics of what models are being prepared, but don’t be surprised if somewhere along the way, a successor to the 458 Italia is one of them.

Looking at the company’s current lineup, the 458, believe it or not, is now the elder statesman of the group. The FF , the F12berlinetta , and the just-launched California T are still relatively new compared to the 458. Once you add the LaFerrari to the mix, that’s five unique models Ferrari currently has in its portfolio.

Now, Marchionne also mentioned that these future models will have a four-year lifecycle and from there, "M" versions will be built, of which another four years will be tacked on to them. What these models are, we still don’t know, but we’re certainly curious as to how Ferrari can pull it off given that it has no plans of exceeding the 7,000-unit cap it has for its models in a given year. There’s talk that the company plans to ramp that up to 10,000 units, but such discussions aren’t expected to be taken seriously for a few more years.

All this, of course, leaves us with a mix of excitement and anxiety regarding Ferrari’s future. Introducing one new model a year is the exciting part, but not knowing what these models are is making us really anxious.

If you’ve been drooling at the sight of the Maserati Alfieri since its introduction at the Geneva Motor Show in March, then the latest news coming from Italy should make you very happy: both the Coupe and the Cabrio versions will make it into production.

The good news arrives via Fiat ’s five-year masterplan for all of its brands, with Maserati set to launch five all-new vehicles by 2018. The Alfieri Coupe will hit the market two years from now - sooner than initially anticipated - with the roadster to follow in 2017.

The Italians have also released an "engine grid" for their current and upcoming models and, surprisingly enough, the Alfieri won’t get the proven 4.7-liter V-8 under hood. Both the Coupe and Cabrio will be powered by V-6 engines offered with different outputs.

The rear-wheel drive versions will benefit from 410 horsepower, while the all-while drive models will have 450 horsepower and 520 horsepower at their disposal. There’s no word whether the Alfieri will borrow the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo unit from the Ghibli , but it appears the range-topping sedan will have the same output as the base AWD Alfieri.

Additional details are still under wraps, but expect for the Coupe model to be unveiled in production guise sometime next year.

Jeep has finally confirmed that the highly-anticipated Grand Wagoneer nameplate will return to its lineup. Unfortunately, that won’t happen until 2018, according to the Chrysler five-year plan that was unveiled today by Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne.

There are very few details we can cling on right now, but we do know that the Grand Wagoneer will offer seating for seven and will climb atop the Jeep lineup in both size and premium features. It is currently unknown whether or not the SUV will share underpinnings with the Dodge Durango , which is scheduled to receive a mid-cycle refresh in 2017.

But until that happens, Jeep has numerous goals to achieve, like expanding its lineup from five models built in one country to 6 nameplates assembled in six countries. Specific details haven’t been released, but the brand is expected to start building vehicles in Asia and South America as well. So far, we only know that the 2015 Renegade will be built in Italy, alongside the Fiat 500X .

Aside from that, Jeep is also looking to increase global dealerships from 4,706 to 6,023, with the largest expansion to come from South America and Asia to help double its sales by 2018.

As far as new models are concerned, a yet unnamed C-segment SUV will arrive in 2016, the year that marks the iconic brand’s 75th anniversary. Details are slim to say the least, but the new SUV is likely to replace the Compass and the Patriot , both scheduled to retire the same year. Also in 2016, the Cherokee is scheduled to get its first facelift since being revived.

The larger Grand Cherokee will also get a refresh, but that will happen in 2015, two years before a brand-new generation will be unveiled. 2017 will also see the introduction of an all-new Wrangler to replace the current JK. And if previous reports are correct, the new iteration will arrive with a redesigned frame, a power-retractable top, and a fixed windshield.

As you might have noticed, there’s no word in regard to a future Grand Cherokee SRT . With the SRT performance brand axed and its entire lineup handled over to Dodge , the Grand Cherokee might have to do with upgrades provided by Mopar.
