  Sports Cars are engineered to go around corners and straight lines as fast as possible. They are usually expensive, dangerous and so much fun that everybody wants one. Owning a sports car is a gratifying experience but it will cost you money and back pain as they are usually expensive to maintain and not very comfortable. But who cares as they look like supermodels at the beach.

The Wankel engine appears to have a bright future ahead as Mazda spills the beans about a revival of the rotary in an upcoming replacement for the sporty RX-8. U.K.-based AutoExpress says the automaker is eschewing the idea of turbocharging its rotary in favor of its trendy and efficient ‘SkyActiv’ engineering methods. Though no solid details have been confirmed, Mazda seems to have conveyed a few "understandings" to AE in regards to the car’s structure and engine performance targets.

Besides the high-revving rotary, the upcoming car is said to be based on a stretched version of the soon-to-be-unveiled, next-gen MX-5 Miata. It’s likely the chassis will have to undergo some strengthening in order to deal with the larger amounts of horsepower. Though it will be beefed up, Mazda will surely work hard to keep the new vehicle under the old RX-8’s 2,888-pound curb weight.

The RX-8 replacement is expected to hit showrooms for the 2017 model year after it makes its world debut in 2016.

Renault has just regained its Nurburgring record as the fastest production car with front-wheel-drive. As promised earlier this year , the French automaker stormed the German track and lapped the Nordschleife in less than eight minutes with a brand-new iteration of the Renault Megane RS .

The new benchmark was established only a couple of months after Spanish manufacturer Seat put the Leon Cupra atop the front-wheel-drive record list. The hatchback lapped the German course in 7:58.4, stealing a record that has been with Renault for about three years. Renault’s previous accomplishment was achieved with the Megane RS 265 Trophy, a sportier, 265-horsepower version of its Euro-spec C-segment vehicle.

Now, the French reclaimed their Nurburgring crown by using an updated version of the Megane: the RS 275 Trophy-R. Make no mistake though, it’s not the same hot hatch we met last month. The vehicles might be similar in appearance and sport the same engine under the hood, but that extra "R" added to the moniker means the record car is even lighter than the exclusive, limited-run hatch.

It appears things are stirring amid the design studios and development laboratories at Aston Martin these days. Reports have surfaced of Aston’s plans to completely reinvent itself, starting with a series of revamped products. An all-new DB9 is set to be the brand’s first product, destined to hit showrooms for the 2017 model year.

The news comes on the heels of the announcement of Aston Martin’s deal with Mercedes -AMG to source powertrains for upcoming models. What’s more, Mercedes may supply Aston with electronic equipment, such as in-dash infotainment systems, electronic safety aids, and of course, the engine management software.

Though AMG will supply the go-fast bits, Aston is relying on a revised version of the architectural platform the automaker developed while under ownership of Ford Motor Company from 1994 through 2007. That’s not a bad thing, however, as the platform was developed with help from Lotus Engineering, so it will likely be a competent performer.

The platform is said to be largely constructed of Aluminum and will have the ability to take on multiple widths and wheelbases, alleviating the one-look model lineup that Aston currently suffers from.

In 2011, Alfa Romeo debuted an all-new sports car that it dubbed the 4C . Upon initial inspection, this beastly compact model looked to be more of a "future styling" concept, which means it will never see production. However, as time went on, Alfa Romeo decided to make the 4C a reality. Even better, Alfa Romeo plans to release the 4C in the U.S., making it the first U.S.-sold Alfa Romeo since the 2008 8C .

The 4C takes its name from Alfa Romeo’s storied racing tradition. The company first used the 8C and 6C names back in the 1930s and 1940s for both racing and road-going version. The 4C name is a clear indication that it has been inspired by the sports cars of yesteryear, like the 8C that it borrows the carbon fiber, aluminum and rear-wheel-drive configuration from.

The brand-new Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is still three months away from revealing its metal, but development of the sports car continues as the German manufacturer keeps bringing it back to the Nurburgring track. It’s the third time the AMG GT has been spotted on the iconic track, and its behavior suggests the Germans are getting closer and closer to obtaining the final production form.

Unfortunately, the sports car is still wearing its swirly disguise. The black and white camo has kept the car’s shape and details hidden from our eyes ever since Mercedes took it out for the first spin, so there’s not much we can gather in the visual department. Of course, the SLS AMG -like shape is obvious and some of the details have already been discussed and rendered .

What matters is that the AMG GT is busier than ever at the ’Ring, as company engineers and test drivers are busting their humps to find that magical recipe ahead of the official unveiling. And the stakes are high, because it will take a lot of skill and power to give the Porsche 911 Turbo a run for its money. Especially on the "Green Hell."

If you haven’t heard of Ermini , you aren’t alone. After all, it isn’t like people casually mention it in the same breath as Ferrari or Lamborghini when they talk about Italian supercars around the office water cooler. You might be surprised to learn, however, that they aren’t just a startup looking to make some pipe-dream millionaire’s toy. Ermini may not have been active for the last 50 years, but before it closed its doors in the early 1960s, it had quite a history of racing success.

Now, in 2014, they’re back with the Seiottosei, a two-seat roadster that weighs in at only 686 kg (1,512 pounds). Ermini claims that the Seiottosei’s inspiration comes from the Barchetta roadsters that were popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Instead of going for big engines and lots of power, it keeps the focus on low weight, small engines, and driving dynamics. Thanks to this approach, Ermini claims that the Seiottosei’s fuel economy will be more in line with a family sedan’s than a typical sports car’s.

Anyone who’s interested in buying one needs to hurry up though, as only 46 examples will be produced.

The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany holds many of the automaker’s treasures. The likes of which we won’t see any where in the world. One of them is Louise Piëch’s 911 Turbo , which was given to her as a birthday present. And the above video puts this car in the spotlight.

Who is Louise Piëch, and why is her 911 Turbo in the Museum?

First of all, Louise Piëch is the daughter of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche. She is also the mother of current Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piëch, making her a pretty big deal inside Porsche’s world.

So why is her 911 Turbo so special? It’s because that specific 911 Turbo is considered the very first example of the model.

It was produced in 1973, one year before Porsche officially released the 911 Turbo. The 911 Turbo has since become the crown jewel of a lineup that has no shortage of awesomeness.

This video is the story of the first 911 Turbo, a car that ironically didn’t have a Turbo badge because Piëch apparently didn’t want to draw any attention to it. She also didn’t like anything obstructing her natural view of the environment; so at her behest, Porsche didn’t add tint on the car’s windows.

One thing she didn’t mind about the 911 Turbo was the power, as its 3.0-liter engine packed a healthy 260 horsepower. On top of that, the first 911 Turbo has quite the reputation for being rather challenging to handle, thanks to the slow spool and instant-on power once the turbocharger gets moving.

Yet another episode of Jay Leno’s Garage has hit the comedian’s YouTube channel and this one is all about the details. Jay and his Corvette -expert friend Mike McCluskey take a deep dive into the rare 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray that Mike painstakingly restored to factory specifications. Everything from the radiator hoses to the flat-top bolt holding the master cylinder’s lid on tight are talked about.

As it turns out, the 21,000 1963 Sting Rays made were nearly hand-built and each car can almost be considered a concept car . The 1963’s parts differed so greatly from the previous generation that the designers and engineers essentially designed it as they went. Then in 1964, the car’s assembly process was smoothed out, making them easier to build. The ‘63’s hubcaps, for example, are comprised of 17 separate pieces rather than the single stamping piece used from ’64 on.

Besides the 1963’s rarity, especially for its one-year-only split-window design, the car also helped mark the beginning of fuel injection in American cars. Until that time, only a select few European cars came equipped with such a fuel delivery device. Jay’s particular Sting Ray is powered by a 327-cubic-inch small-block making 360 horsepower. That’s an output rating well beyond what other performance cars of the era were making.

Though it’s 22 minutes long, the video holds your attention with facts and interesting tid-bits that only make the C2 Sting Ray that much more special to today’s car culture.

BMW and Toyota are already working on a joint-venture hybrid supercar that’s rumored to be more powerful and faster than the already legendary Lexus LF-A . That’s plenty of news to get excited about, but it appears the collaboration is about to spawn yet another enticing product. According to CAR, the said companies are planning to develop a range of mid-engined sports cars to go against the Porsche 911 . Talk about big ambitions.

Codenamed Silk Road 2, the project includes a mid-engined two-seater for both brands that will reportedly hit the market as the BMW Z7 and the Lexus ZC/ZR in late 2018 or early 2019. Both sports cars will be developed at BMW BMW ’s headquarters in Munich and have 3.0-liter, inline-six engines fitted behind their seats. Aided by a pair of turbochargers, the mill is said to deliver between 400 and 500 horsepower. That’s right between the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the 911 Turbo .

Since sports cars are also about lightness, BMW will focus on reducing weight too. Word has it the aim is for the vehicle to tip the scales at around 3,637 pounds. Not bad considering other BMW or Toyota Toyota products, but certainly not enough against the 911. Both the 911 Carrera S and the 911 Turbo are lighter at 3,040 pounds and 3,538 pounds respectively. This will likely slow things down in the performance department, but four to five years are long way to go and many changes can occur.

Once they are ready to hit the market, the BMW Z7 and the Lexus ZC/ZR will retail for around €90,000 ($121,960 as of 6/12/2014), the report adds, which makes them cheaper than the Porsches they’re designed to challenge.

Also included in the project is a hybrid powertrain that will include a still unknown twin-turbo engine and an electric motor rated at around 150 horsepower. The drivetrain will also include a quick seven-speed, dual-clutch, high-performance batteries, composite brakes and active aerodynamics.

Things at Jaguar Land Rover have just gotten more interesting. The British car company has just announced its own skunk works department, called Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations. The new division is charged with making high performance and ultra luxury editions of standard production Jaguar and Land Rover products on a bespoke, individual level.

Much like BMW Individual, Special Operations will build vehicles to specifications outside the normal assembly line ordering guide. Customers can order their choice of colors, interior amenities, trim packages, and add-on accessories. The shop will also handle the company’s limited-edition collectables that run with small production numbers.

Even more, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations will work on vehicle restorations and servicing with parts gathered through salvage or recreation of specialized historic parts. The Heritage Team already has their first major project lined up. You may recall the six lightweight E-Types we reported Jaguar is building from parts left over from the 1960s.

The operation will be led by John Edwards and overseen by Dr. Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Executive. Paul Newsome, formerly of Williams Advanced Engineering, is heading up the team of designers and engineers under Edwards. In the media statement after the jump, Speth says the new Special Operations division was created in an effort to “reinforce the global reputation of both Jaguar and Land Rover in building exciting and desirable products.”

The Special Operations division will be located in the company’s new Technical Center, located in the West Midlands area of the UK, just outside the corporate headquarters and will employ some 150 team members.
