  Sports Cars are engineered to go around corners and straight lines as fast as possible. They are usually expensive, dangerous and so much fun that everybody wants one. Owning a sports car is a gratifying experience but it will cost you money and back pain as they are usually expensive to maintain and not very comfortable. But who cares as they look like supermodels at the beach.

It may not come as much of a surprise to many of you, but Ferrari has won a pair of awards for the engine its 458 supercar uses. Every year a collection of journalists from more than 30 different countries weigh in on the best and brightest powerplants in the business and hand out multiple accolades to congratulate those that push forward the art of internal combustion.

Ferrari’s 4.5-liter V-8 was chosen for two separate awards, the Performance Engine of the Year and the award for the Above 4-liter class. Ferrari has won these two awards every year since 2011, with the 4.5-liter taking both honors in 2011 and 2012 — the 2013 awards went to the V-12 engine in the F12 Berlinetta .

With an astonishing — and record-setting — specific output of 135 horsepower per liter in the 458 Speciale , this naturally aspirated engine is one of the most advanced units ever created.

Ferrari is not the only winner this year though, and competitors like McLaren are also racking up awards for their engines. Ferrari won’t just sit back on its laurels, and as the four consecutive wins proves, the Italians will keep pushing the art of high-power, high-revving engines.

Rumors about Ford ’s planned revival of the Focus RS have been flying around since late 2013, with many sources claiming the hot hatch will return with as much as 330 horsepower on tap. As of 06/26/2014, the Focus RS is no longer a rumor, as our skilled paparazzi caught the upcoming rocket testing disguised as a Focus ST .

Don’t let the "ST" badge around back fool you, this mule is more than that, with plenty of details giving its true identity away. Look closer at the front end’s uncamouflaged area and you’ll notice a lip spoiler and a larger air intake in the lower apron. Of course, that’s not what the front bumper will look like in production form, but the intercooler seen in the spy shots is certainly different from the one fitted on the Focus ST .

The mule’s RS-ness becomes even more obvious around back, where a different exhaust pipe configuration peeks out underneath the bumper. Whereas the ST has a center-mounted, twin-pipe arrangement, the RS mule comes with separate tips placed toward the sides. Lastly, the camouflaged roof-mounted spoiler appears to sport a new design.

It was in 2014 when the BMW 2 Series Coupe came to replace the outgoing 1 Series Coupe, and shortly following its release, BMW revealed a couple of cool iterations wearing the M235i badge. By time we turn the calendar to 2015, we will have the even more powerful M2 . For the first time in the compact’s career, BMW opted to develop a customer race car under the M235i Racing moniker. Lighter and more powerful than the standard version, the race car is already a common sight in the VLN Endurance Championship and a handful of them managed to run a full 24-hour race at Nurburgring this year.

With the M235i shaping up into a hell of a rival for the compact sports cars such as the Audi TTS or the Nissan 370Z , a brawnier version of the coupe is rolling out in Germany as we speak. This time it’s not BMW that’s responsible for the mighty racer; rather TuningWerk, a small company known for updating any BMW BMW and Mini it can get its hands on, is the mastermind behind this one. Meet the BMW M235i RS, the most powerful 2 Series ever created.

In 25 years, the Mazda MX-5 Miata has become a cult icon and entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling, two-seat, open-top sports car . But that is old news, and we are here to show you just what Mazda plans to do in celebration of the Miata’s 25th year in existence. The automaker is launching a 25th Anniversary Edition at the New York Auto Show to show buyers just how important the roadster is to Mazda.

This special-edition MX-5 Miata is based on the power retractable hard top (PRHT) version of the car, giving this drop-top a nice and quiet cabin when the top is up — I noted this in my recent test drive of the Club version . The 25th Anniversary Edition will be exclusively available in Soul Red Metallic — a proper color for the iconic sports car — with contrasting black mirrors, A-pillars and top. On the inside, the special model gets off-white leather seating and door trim, and a hand-finished decorative panel.

Under the hood, things will remain the same, as it will feature the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder mill that cranks out 167 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque when mated to the standard six-cog manual. You can also opt for the six-speed auto transmission, but that results in 11 fewer ponies under the hood. This special MX-5 also gets the added benefit of Bilstein dampers to keep it glued to the road in the twist.

Unfortunately, there are no real modifications to this car other than the exclusive colors inside and out, the hand-worked decorative panel and badges, but it is still a nice send-off for the NC-generation MX-5.

The Toyota GT86 and its Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S brothers were launched in 2012, with only the Suby and the Scion reaching U.S. shores shortly after. The triples share the same 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, boxer engine that generates 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The unit mates to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic and enables the sports car to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 to 7.6 seconds.

Granted, the GT86 is not nearly the fastest sports car you can buy nowadays, but its sub-£26,000 sticker makes it affordable to the average Joe and quite the bargain compared to its competitors. However, the Toyobaru triplets are slowly but surely losing their appeal due to the fact that no true performance updates have been added in more than two years since their launch. But that’s about to change, as Toyota is getting ready to drop Subaru from the partnership.

Once that happens, Toyota will finally be able to develop a more potent, next-generation sports car, likely powered by a turbocharged engine and hybrid technology. Meanwhile though, it appears the Japanese are working on a new iteration of the current GT86, as confirmed by a new batch of spy shots we just found in our inbox.

The 458 Speciale was a bit of a surprise when the details began leaking out in 2013, and we were in for an even bigger treat when it debuted during the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show with its 596 horsepower — 34 more horses than the base 458 — 398 pound-feet of torque, 200 pounds of weight loss, and three-second 0-to-60 mph time. Now on June 24th, 2014, rumors surfaced claiming that Ferrari is planning on removing the top from the 458 Speciale, creating a new, road- and track-ready Spider.

The news was broken by 4wheelsnews.com via "inside sources" within Ferrari, but the details behind the model remain a relative mystery for now. What we know for sure is that this model will weigh significantly less than the current 458 Italia Spider , carry the same engine as the Speciale Coupe and clip 60 mph in around three ticks of the second hand.

With the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed just around the corner, BMW is announcing its lineup of vehicles for the British event. The Germans are set to display a handful of Bimmers, most of which will also make their public debut in the United Kingdom. BMW will hoon five sporty cars up the famous Goodwood Hill, beginning with the i8 sports car . The hybrid will be joined by the M5 30 Jahre Edition , the fastest production M5 to date with 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque under the hood. The third vehicle to charge up the Hill and make its British debut is the X4 crossover .

Since no racing event is complete without the brand-new M4 , the Germans are also showcasing a pair of two-door rockets, in both Coupe and Convertible guises. The drop-top will parade the course wearing wearing a few Individual parts. As for the Coupe, BMW says it is bringing a "special" model to England. How special? Stick around to find out.

What seemed like an impossible scenario a couple of years ago might become reality within the next twelve months, as Ferrari is reportedly working on an entry-level version of the 458 Italia. That’s the word coming from Automobile, which claims the Italians are set to introduce a twin-turbo, 2.9-liter, V-6 engine, and create a more efficient and less expensive sports car based on the popular 458.

Shocked? You should be. Last time Ferrari used a V-6 engine in a road-going car it was 1974 in the soon-to-retire Dino . Since then, all V-6 units have motivated Formula One cars exclusively. It happened from 1980 through 1988 before FIA reintroduced V-6 power units to the sport for the 2014 season.

Details are rather scarce, but such a move would make a lot of sense given the market’s current shift to smaller, more efficient units. So what’s Ferrari hoping to achieve by rolling out an entry-level 458 ? Skip past the jump to find out.

Open top road/track cars have become the rage these days. That’s especially true in Great Britain where seemingly a new startup comes to life promising to take the segment to a new level. Elemental is the latest to try its luck and it has come out swinging, unveiling the RP-1 and promising to lay waste to the KTM X-Bow and the Ariel Atom .

It’s an awfully difficult segment to launch new products into, especially when it’s pitted against some very established competitors. But Elemental is undaunted and the British company is relishing the opportunity to prove its worth with the RP-1.

You can’t blame the company for at least being confident. After all, the RP-1 is being promised as an evolution of the road and track car and taking it to a new level with a package that includes a powerful Ford EcoBoost engine wrapped in a lightweight carbon fiber body.

In a perfect world, such proclamations are treated with wide-eyed admiration. But with so many of this kind of cars in the market, Elemental still needs to prove itself before it’s treated with the same reverence as a company like Ariel.

The company has gotten the ball rolling in that regard. Now comes the time where the RP-1 prove its worth.
