  Sports Cars are engineered to go around corners and straight lines as fast as possible. They are usually expensive, dangerous and so much fun that everybody wants one. Owning a sports car is a gratifying experience but it will cost you money and back pain as they are usually expensive to maintain and not very comfortable. But who cares as they look like supermodels at the beach.


The Mercedes news keeps on rolling in with the latest bits of information regarding the next-generation SLK roadster. Destined for debut as a 2018 model, it’s reported the new drop top will feature a hybrid powertrain similar to the new C-Class sedan.

According to AutoExpress, the new SLK will also ride on the modular sports car architecture (MSA), just as the larger SL roadster. The new underpinnings will allow the SLK to accept a larger variety of engine and transmission options not currently available. That, combined with the C-Class’ plug-in hybrid powertrain opens the possibilities for an all-wheel-drive option as well.

Living up to its name, the modular sports car architecture allows engineers to easily change the lengths, widths, and wheelbases. This will help differentiate the SLK from the larger SL-Class , while keeping engineering and manufacturing costs to a minimum. Even with the new platform, the SLK’s production will continue in the current factory in Bremen, Germany. The SL-Class will shift production to that location as well.

Mercedes’ crusade to improve fuel efficiency surely means some weight reduction over the current car. Weighing in at 3,163 pounds, the SLK is already a fairly light car, but could still stand to lose a few pounds. A reduced curb weight would also help it better compete again the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z4 Roadster.

It’s still years away from launching, but as early as now, talks of the next-generation Mercedes SL-Class have begun to take shape. The biggest news, other than the fact that it will be an all-new model, is the advanced new platform the SL stands to receive together with the next-generation SLK .

According to Auto Express, the 2019 SL-Class will be significantly different from the one running around the streets of the world these days. The biggest change, it seems, is Mercedes ’ ratcheting up the efficiency of its new models. In the case of the SL-Class, that comes with the adoption of its MFA and MRA common modular architectures for front and rear-wheel-drive models, allowing a multitude of vehicles to be built on the same platform.

It’s an easier approach that should cut production costs for these vehicles. Granted, neither the MFA nor the MRA architectures will be used on the SL and SLK-Class, but rather a third platform, the modular sports car architecture (MSA), that will be used on both models.

The adoption of the MSA platform on both the SL and SLK will be a stark contrast from the current setup, specifically the exclusive use of a bespoke chassis platform on the SL. But once the modular platform comes into the picture, the manufacturing process for both models will also shift and become geared toward sharing elements like the front bulkhead and parts of the suspension. Also, don’t underestimate the convenience of both models being built in the same factory.

On the flip side, you can still expect some unique styling details for both the new SL and SLK-Class. Even with the shared platform, certain elements, like the dimensions of the both vehicles, will still be kept different. This allows both cars to still have that unique look about them that differentiates one from the other. Diversity will still be there, even though the skeletons for both models are going to be the same.

It’s a bold new direction that really shouldn’t surprise anyone given the commitment Mercedes has to the SL-Class as one of its most important models. But like we said, changes aren’t imminent so don’t expect anything drastic.

It’s been less than a month since the 2016 Audi R8 was caught testing at the Nurburgring, and the redesigned sports car returned to the "Green Hell" for more performance adjustments.

Fortunately, our skilled spy photographers were on duty when the vehicle hit the course and provided us with the most revealing spy shots of the upcoming R8 yet.

The Germans finally ditched most of the camouflage and, although the signature front grille isn’t out in the open, it’s clear as day that the next-generation model won’t stray too much from the current R8 in terms of styling.

Up front, both the headlamps and the grille appear to be smaller than before, while the hood features a smoother surface with less muscular lines toward the sides. Around back, the new, slimmer LED taillights are joined by redesigned vents. Below there’s a new diffuser flanked by wide, rectangular exhaust pipes. The latter are now mounted lower than the old, rounded ones.

Although the silhouette of the car remains basically the same, Audi managed to make the new R8 look flatter and a little bit wider. We won’t get confirmation until the sports car is properly revealed, but, if this proves to be true, the 2016 R8 will deliver vastly improved performances on the track.

For a long time it was believed that the McLaren P13 would be the next sports car to come out of Woking. Details on the "baby" McLaren have been rather confusing, but now that the 650S is already in production, things are finally starting to take shape.

Aimed at the Porsche 911 , the P13 will go into production next year with a de-tuned, 3.8-liter, V-8 engine under the hood. The unit will deliver around 450 horsepower, which is nearly 200 horses less than the 650S . Pricing will be reduced as well, with the 911 fighter to retail for about $200,000, making it cheaper than the outgoing MP4-12C .

A smaller price tag also signals that the P13 will feature less carbon-fiber body parts compared to the 650S. According to Top Gear, the body will be mostly aluminum, although McLaren has yet to decide what processes will be used to make the vehicle’s panels.

This week has seen some shake-ups with the SL-Class lineup from Mercedes. The German automaker’s latest announcement centers on the mighty SL63 roadster. In an apparent move to streamline the lineup, Mercedes is cutting the Performance Package option, but adding even more horsepower to the standard car.

With the current Performance Package, the 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 got a 27 horsepower bump in output over the standard SL63’s 529 horsepower. But all 2015 SL63s will come with 577 horsepower standard. Adding to that, a new mechanical locking differential will help put power to the ground more effectively.

It’s likely Mercedes is stirring the SL pot in hopes of drumming up sales. Though it’s only two years old, the latest generation of SL-Class hasn’t seen a major update since its release. The car has historically been a slow seller, focusing mainly on quality over quantity for those well off enough for those who can afford a $100,000, two-seat convertible. For 2013, Mercedes sold just over 7,000 units — considerably more than the 4,899 units it sold in 2012.

This news comes directly after Mercedes announced the axing of the Euro-spec SL350 in favor of the new SL400 powered by a smaller, yet more powerful 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V-6. Luckily, the U.S. will also be getting the new SL400, adding to the SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG models already available here.

Well boys and girls, it looks like those crazy kids at Touriclips are at it again. This time they have gotten some video footage of what appears to be a hard-core Golf GTI blasting around the Green Hell. According to the YouTube description, Touriclips thinks this is a Club Sport edition of the GTI, or perhaps a mildly camouflaged Golf R EVO. Either way, they expect the car is being shaken down for a debut at the Wörthersee Tuning Festival in May.

I am not sure I buy that though. A quick eye will notice the Wiechers Sport logo on the flanks of the car in white. Wiechers is a company that specializes in roll cages, harnesses and other racing gear. I don’t see Volkswagen putting a sponsorship decal on a test mule.

I agree that this is likely a special car for Wörthersee, but I don’t think it’s something that Volkswagen is working on specifically. Every year, Wörthersee sees many cars from other companies that are designed to showcase new parts. With the Mk7 Golf just hitting showrooms around the world, I think Wiechers Sport is finalizing tuning for new suspension and roll cage upgrades to showcase at the show.

Secretly, I do hope they prove me wrong though. A tauter, lighter Golf GTI would be an amazing machine to spend time in. It is no secret that the Volkswagen Golf is one of my all-time favorite cars, but there seems to be too much amiss for me to take this as a new special-edition car. I mean we do have proof of a Golf R wagon , so I guess anything is possible.

What do you guys think? Did Touriclips get it wrong, or am I just an idiot that likes to make things up?

I have put in a line to Wiechers to see if this is their mule, or not. If they don’t claim it, then the Club Sport GTI rumors get a lot juicier. Keep your eyes here for an update.

The Fiat 500 Abarth is one of my all-time favorite cars. It is an uncommon dose of fun and lunacy in our increasingly beige automotive world. What is a mildly eccentric Italian company to do after creating such a machine? Apparently the answer is to create an even faster and hard-core version to take racing.

Meet the 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione.

Fiat already has an Abarth Assetto Corse for both the 500 and 695 cars, but this new Evoluzione model turns things up to 11. Power is up, weight is down, and in true race car fashion, there are a lot of minor improvements learned over the last few years of competition combine to make repairs and adjustments easier. The car obviously still retains the full complement of FIA-approved safety equipment.

If you already own one of the older 695 Assetto cars and want to stay competitive in the Trofei series, Fiat is offering the full Evoluzione kit as an upgrade.

Hennessey Perfromance ’s most recent projects included power updates for the 2014 Corvette Stingray and 2014 Chevrolet SS . If you’ve been with us the past couple of months, you may also know that its Lotus Exige -based Venom GT is the world’s fastest production car, albeit an unofficial record, at 270.49 miles per hour.

But these aren’t the only vehicle Hennessey has meddled with in its Texas workshop lately. The company has added its familiar HPE700 package to a couple of European sports cars , such as the recently-discontinued McLaren MP4-12C and the Ferrari 458 Spider, as well.

Tuning an already fast Ferrari 458 might sound insane to some, but nothing’s too extreme for the folks over at Hennessey, who have added a pair of ball bearing turbochargers in order to increase output up to a neck-breaking 738 horses and 532 pound-feet of torque.

The twin-turbo Ferrari was also enhanced with a new fuel system, a stainless steel exhaust system, among other goodies, while being fitted with the HPE Engine Management Calibration for optimized performance.

These updates enables the Texas-tweaked 458 Spider to launch from 0 to 60 mph in only 2.8 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds at 137 miles per hour.

Automakers taking the web series route have become prevalent these days. Koenigsegg has "Inside Koenigsegg" and Chevrolet Racing has the "Track to Street" series in the middle of the ALMS season. Now, Aston Martin is joining in on the fun with the debut of the "Discover Aston Martin DB9" web series.

Unlike the technical nature of Inside Koenigsegg and the action-packed episodes of Track to Street, Discover Aston Martin DB9 takes a dramatic look at one of the British automaker’s most esteemed models.

The first episode gives a full overview of the iconic DB9 , complete with interviews with two men greatly responsible for its development: design director Marek Reichman and director of product development Ian Minards.

WIth the history and pedigree of the DB9 as it relates to Aston Martin, it’s no wonder why the company holds the model in high regard, attributing its appeal to a legacy of style and innovation that has defined the model and the company.

Or simply put, as Reichman describes the DB9, "it’s the backbone of Aston Martin."


Naturally aspirated engines seem destined for the endangered species’ list as forced induction makes its way into nearly every mainstream category. The latest example is the new SL400 roadster Mercedes announced today. It’s a direct replacement for the SL350 roadster with the only real change centered around the new 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6.

The new biturbo V-6 might be down on displacement from its 3.5-liter predecessor, but it makes up for it with power — 26 extra horses and 81 extra pound-feet. Mercedes says 0 to 62 mph time will drop 0.7 seconds, doing the deed in 5.2 seconds on its way to its 155-mph governed top speed. While Mercedes does have a nine-speed transmission available for use, the German automaker decided the current seven-speed unit would suffice for the SL400.

The biturbo V-6 was first seen last year in the E400 sedan, though it made less power. Like that engine, the SL400’s mill features some pretty snazzy tech to create tire-turning torque while keeping the EPA (and customers’ wallets) happy. Its direct-injection fuel system features Piezo injectors that squirt fuel up to five times per power stroke for an even burn. The pressure at which they operate is varied based on engine mapping and certain conditions. Lighting the fuel is an ignition system that creates multiple sparks over during the same power stroke of each piston. Just like the fuel, the individual spark events are variable in their timing — all in an effort for the cleanest, most power-producing burn possible.

Mercedes says the SL400 will get 32 mpg while producing minimal tailpipe emissions.
