Hyundai i20 WRC

Hyundai Motor Co. has launched a new sub-brand called "N." The new brand will consist of high-performance road cars, as well as the ambitious rally car project. As we know, Hyundai will be a part of the 2014 World Rally Championship and its resident rally car, the i20 WRC , will be the first product built under this new N brand.

By now, you must be wondering why the letter "N;" well, Hyundai is based in Namyang, Korea, and that is where the "N" comes from — easy enough. In an odd twist, the Hyundai N performance division isn’t actually based in Korea; it is actually stationed in Alzenau, Germany, which just outside Frankfurt.

This German plant is home to the 2014 rally car, and it is where the company has plans to build its road cars under the new N sub-brand. Having said that, we can’t say for sure whether these N performance rigs will be bespoke sports car or just tuned versions of existing Hyundai models.

Speaking at the press briefing, Hyundai motorsport president, Gyoo-Heon Choi, said: "This is the start of a new chapter in Hyundai’s history, one that we expect to have a positive impact on our brand around the globe."

The BMW Z4 lineup has remained change-free since its 2010 redesign, but this doesn’t mean tuners have lost interest in the 2014 Z4 roadster .

MB Individual Cars from Augsburg, Germany is one tuner with plenty of interest in the Z4, and it developed a pretty bad-ass for the sports roadster. The kit is mad entirely from carbon fiber and is limited to only 25 units that will be released in early 2014.

This Z4’s body is coated in a slick Mineral White, with the exposed carbon-fiber components that make up this kit. These components include the front spoiler lip, kidneys and air inlets, side-view mirrors, direction indicators, swords in the side sills, rear spoiler lip, rear diffuser insertion and some small swords for the lateral parts of the rear apron.

MB continued by adding in a set of wheels and interior improvements, but the tuner is also considering offering some engine upgrades in the near future.

For those looking to own a piece of a supercar without having to burn their pockets, a new Canadian kit-car manufacturer may have the answer.

Dubuc Super Light Cars, a straightforward name for a company if there ever was one, has officially unveiled the Tomahawk, a mid-engine kit car that looks the part of a sports car, albeit one that comes in a 2,000-pound package.

According to Dubuc SLC, the Tomahawk will come with a lightweight polymer body and a 300-pound aluminum monocoque. Both components have been bonded and bolted together, ensuring that the car’s overall dimensions aren’t compromised by the infusion of the two parts.

From there, prospective customers will have the choice of dropping any type of engine they want on the bay, including a gas engine or an electric motor. The suspension setup was developed using components from a C4-generation Chevrolet Corvette .

Owing itself to looking like a bonafide sports car , the Tomahawk also comes with a number of sporty components, highlighted by doors that actually open at a 75-degree angle. Even as a kit car, this bad boy also has door panels, an ergonomically-designed cockpit, a dashboard, console seats, a see-through Targa roof, side mirrors, and a DOT-approved windshield.

Given the dimensions of the cockpit, Dubuc SLC says that the Tomahawk can accommodate a wide range of body types, even somebody who’s 6’3" and weighs 275 pounds.

The Dubuc SLC is scheduled to make its debut at the Montreal International Auto Show this coming January. Once it goes on sale, the body and the frame kit will be priced at CAD$19,995, which is a little under USD$19,000 based on current exchange rates. All in all, the price for a complete bid is estimated to be around CAD$30,000, or somewhere in the USD$ 28,000 range.

Lightweight, track-ready sports cars have turned into its own market these days, so much so that more and more companies are coming out with their own versions. We’ve seen a number of them in recent years, including the Ariel Atom , the KTM X-Bow , and heck, even the Flip Car from Fast & Furious 6.

Recently, two companies are joining in on the fun, and they’re preparing a car that will pack a chest-caving punch.

The companies are Palatov Motorsport and Sector 111 and their mission is to build an 1,800-pound sports car that will not only make use of an emissions-compliant, V-8 engine, but do so while also producing 430 horsepower. Using Palatov Motorsport’s D2 racer as the base car, the vehicle, which has been coined "Project Dragon," is being developed with the purpose of turning it into a full-fledged pocket rocket that can give its more esteemed competitors a serious run for their money.

Other than their ambitious plans and stated goals, both Palatov and Sector 111 are keeping tight-lipped on the progress of Project Dragon. Rest assured, though, the two are serious are about this project, and with Sector 111 having some experience in building the US-market BAC Mono s, this project figures to gain more traction in the coming months.

Someday, we’ll probably see Project Dragon get an official name and someday, we might even see it go toe-to-toe with the Atoms and X-Bows of the world. Like everybody else, that’s a day we can’t wait to see.

Toyota Supra

Hold on to your seats, fellas. That Toyota -BMW partnership may give birth to its first (concept ) model pretty soon.

It’s been widely believed that the tie-up between the two companies would spawn a variety of performance models, including one that would mark the return of the beloved Supra .

Well, according to Autoblog, it appears that our wishes are about to be answered at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show when the Toyota Supra Concept officially makes its debut. Christmas is still two weeks away, but this is about as cool as an early holiday present to have if you’re a fan of the Supra.

Neither Toyota nor BMW have confirmed this rumor, but for what it’s worth, this is the closest we’ve come to an official date to see the return of one of Toyota’s most beloved models.

Everything really points towards the return of the Supra, too, because a number of Toyota bigwigs have made it known that they want to see the model, or at least a worthy successor to it, return as soon as possible.

Should the NAIAS be the setting for this highly anticipated comeback, expect the Supra Concept to be one of the most talked about models at the event, possibly even for the entire year.

The guys over ThatRacingChannel wanted to see if two European supercar — the McLaren MP4-12C — can take on some of the most modern muscle America has to offer in the 2014 SRT Viper . Why on earth you would want to put two cars that aren’t exactly competitors in a head-to-head competition? Well, the answer is simple: because it’s a whole hell of a lot of fun! And if you have the cars at your disposal, why not?

The SRT Viper is powered by a 8.4-liter, V-10 engine that delivers 640 horsepower at 6,150 rpm and 600 pound-feet of torque at 4,950 rpm. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds and up to a top speed of 206 mph. On the other hand, the MP4-12C is powered by a 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V8 with an output of 616 horsepower that allows it to sprint to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and up to 207 mph.

You can always leave it up to Hamann to churn out aftermarket programs for cars that are affordable enough to own, yet still possesses that incredible look to make the power upgrades all worth the price in the end.

Such is the case with the program the German tuner built for the BMW 4 Series Coupe . At a starting price of just over $41,000, the 4er won’t burn holes on your pockets, so owning one isn’t that difficult to do. But having one in your garage is only the first part of the equation to thoroughly enjoying the spoils of the 4 Series .

That’s where Hamann comes into the picture, or to be more specific the myriad of performance kits it has developed for the sports coupe . It’s an extensive list that covers a large boat of trim levels for the 4 Series.

For the 420d/420d xDrive, power spikes from 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque all the way up to 216 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. Moving up to the 430d, you get the treat of seeing the standard 258 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque increase to 295 horses and 446 pound-feet. If you have the 435d xDrive, you receive the most powerful tuned 4 Series of the lot, thanks to a new output of 355 ponies and 512 pound-feet of torque.

Far be it to leave the ’i’ models alone, Hamann also gave them their own line of power boosts, led by the 420i/420i xDrive TwinPower, which now has 208 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque, up from the stock 184 ponies and 199 pound-feet of torque. Then, there’s the 428i/428i xDrive TwinPower models, both of which now get 272 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque from the stock 245 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, the 435i/435i xDrive TwinPower models come into the picture, boasting 348 ponies and 331 pound-feet of torque, which is a significant increase from the 306-horsepower and 295 pound-feet output of the standard model.

Who said you can’t enjoy a supercar while it snows? This driver certainly didn’t want to stay indoors on a frosty morning, so he decided to crank up the C7 Corvette Stingray parked in his garage and head to a parking lot.

Yes, an empty parking lot on a snowy day with no one around except for a friend with a camera in his hand. Let’s do some donuts, shall we? And this isn’t just any Chevrolet Corvette Stingray . This one has a supercharger from Pfadt Race Engineering, which spools to bump the power output to 650 horsepower.

Pfadt Performance also offers a Stage 2 conversion for the C7 Corvette Stingray that includes headers, exhaust, tweaked ECU, etc. Also available is a body kit and wheels for the new C7 Vette.

That is more than sufficient to get the rear tires loose on an icy parking lot. And of course, a lot of fun despite the miserable weather.

Aftermarket company, BBM Motorsport, has pulled the covers off of its new program for the BMW M6 Cabriolet and by all accounts, this is one of the more impressive takes we’ve seen of the German saloon .

The first order of business was to change the color of the M6, and BBM Motorsport called in SFT Carwrap for the job. With the latter responsible for the dress-up, the M6 Cabrio was treated to a fancy matte steel-blue body wrap and accented with gunpowder shades that came from SOTT / Arlon. A set of alloy wheels - 21-inch Breyton Spirit R types - was also installed, as was a KW suspension kit that keeps the car handling supremely even with all the power upgrades it received.

Speaking of such, BBM Motorsport wasted little time giving the M6 Cabrio a huge engine modification, something it achieved by remapping the ECU and installing a complete Akrapovic exhaust with carbon end pipes. With these upgrades, the aftermarket company was able to increase the output of the M6 to an insane 705 horsepower and 636 pound-feet of torque, a significant rise from the standard 560-horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque output of the standard model.

No performance numbers were given, but we assume the BBM Motorsport-tuned M6 is now capable of hitting 60 mph in 3.5 seconds to go with a top speed of 190 mph.

Every Monday, Motor Trend rolls out a new episode of its Ignition show and the latest one brings into focus a great sports car: the 2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S .

Carlos Lago checks out the V-12-powered sports car to see if it is really worthy of all the praise that is heaped upon it. He also checks out just how well the Vantage V12 S performs, relative to Aston Martin’s claim that this model is indeed the second-fastest-accelerating car the company has produced. This is where Carlos got to have all the fun in the world, as he pushed the Aston to its limits. Lago also lets us in on whether or not the controversial single-clutch automated manual transmission really hampers the performance of the Vantage.

As a reminder, the V12 Vantage S is powered by an AM28 6.0-liter, V-12 engine that delivers a total of 565 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 3.7 seconds — Lago noted a much slower time — and up to a top speed of 205 mph.
