  Sports Cars are engineered to go around corners and straight lines as fast as possible. They are usually expensive, dangerous and so much fun that everybody wants one. Owning a sports car is a gratifying experience but it will cost you money and back pain as they are usually expensive to maintain and not very comfortable. But who cares as they look like supermodels at the beach.

For my money, the Porsche 918 is one of the most exciting and important cars to be released in the last 25 years. Since it was introduced as a concept in Geneva in 2010, I have gobbled up every morsel of information and video of it in motion. The latest entry into my vault of Porsche knowledge is this video from the Nurburgring.

What we get to see is a track-side video showing a 918 wearing the Martini livery chasing after a new 991-generation 911 Turbo. It mates a 4.6-liter V-8 to a pair of electric motors for a combined power output of nearly 900 horsepower. The 991 Turbo is the latest in a long line of forced-induction 911s. the 2014 911 Turbo uses a 3.8-liter, flat-six engine that produces 560 horsepower, enough to launch the 911 to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.1 seconds.

As this is a standard test session there are very few cars on track, and aside from one slow moving BMW , the video is pure Porsche.


The demise of the Jaguar XK doesn’t necessarily mean Jaguar is leaving a hole in its entire lineup. A new model is set to replace the XK and from the looks of it, the British automaker is looking to field a coupe version of its bigger Jaguar XJ with styling cues attributed to the F-Type .

Given how the F-Type has been an enormous success and is largely the reason why Jaguar decided to drop the XK, it’s a smart move for Jaguar to make the proposed XJ Coupe look similar to its current meal ticket. That appears to be the plan for Jaguar, as it continues to make aggressive move after aggressive move to be a player in the luxury performance market.

The reported arrival of the XJ Coupe also means that Jaguar won’t necessarily drop out of the 2+2 grand tourer market where models like the Bentley Continental GT and the new Mercedes S-Class Coupe reside. On the contrary, Jaguar is preparing the XJ Coupe to be a direct rival to these models. With that, you can at least expect the model to be bigger than the XK with a similar aluminum architecture as the F-Type.

Engine options will likely also be varied and could range from either a supercharged V-6 to a V-8, or possible both. A six-cylinder diesel is also expected to be in the mix.

Discussions on price will likely be shelved at least until there’s confirmation for the model, but reason dictates that the model could be priced somewhere in the neighborhood of at least £100,000.

Jaguar F-Type Coupe

Things are heating up at Jaguar , and if CAR magazine is to be believed, the F-Type is going to get lots of fun, new models. From the start Jaguar wanted the F-Type to be a true competitor for Porsche’s venerable 911 . As such, the little F-Type lineup will grow to include an entry level four-cylinder model, an AWD model, an R-S Coupe with as much as 600 horsepower and a Speedster version. The Speedster version will be a special edition model that is loosely based on the bonkers Project 7 concept car Jaguar brought to Goodwood.

No word on a Targa model.

I think CAR’s thinking and information is likely solid, but don’t expect full production runs of all these cars next year. Some of the models like the Speedster and R-S will likely be 2016 or 2017 at the earliest and will only be produced in very limited numbers.

With such a breadth of F-Type models, Jaguar has the room to kill off the XK and create a higher-end competitor to cars like the Aston Martin DB9 and Bentley Continental.

Overall, I think the plan is ambitious and very exciting. The F-Type is already one of the most exciting new cars on the road today, and having even more choices is only going to make things better.

After numerous starts and stops, Alfa Romeo’s return to North America now has a definitive date. The Italian automaker has cirlced the 2014 New York International Auto Show as the date when it finally touches down (again) on American soil with the presentation of the Alfa Romeo 4C .

Sans the very-limited 8C action.

And outside of the NAIAS , you can make a case that the New York Auto Show is as big a stage for Alfa Romeo to introduce the 4C in the American market. So there’s a lot riding here for Alfa Romeo, particularly how well it’s going to be received by a new client base, a majority of which are probably young enough not to remember the last time the company was catering to this part of the world.

This bit of news, plus the recent proclamation by Alfa’s head of marketing Alberto Cavaggioni that a new update is in the cards for the 4C every year for the next four or five years, should make for tremendous interest in the 4C in the US.

The 2014 running of the Festivals of Speed is in full swing, and it is on its way to St. Petersburg, FL from April 4th through 6th. Since this show is right in our stomping grounds here in the Sunshine State, we wouldn’t dare miss it. We’ll be there live and in person on April 6th, and you can be there too.

Tickets to the April 4th Jet Port Reception at Tampa International Airport will set you back $100. This event kicks off at 8:00 p.m. on April 6th and runs through 11:00 p.m. The cost of the ticket gets you entry into the hangar-based show, which will have on display vintage and contemporary aircraft, exotic cars, custom motorcycles, high-performance watercraft and luxury products. You also get access to an open bar and themed food, while a jazz orchestra delights your ears.

If that’s not your cup of tea, you can opt to hit up Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg on for the April 6th Festivals of Speed Motorsports Display for just $12 per person. This is the show that I will be at, and it kicks off at 10:00 a.m. on the 6th and runs until 4:00 p.m. Not only do you get to drool over some of the finest cars, motorcycles and watercraft in the U.S., but you also have access to fine cuisine, jazz music, and cigar and wine tasting.

If you want the full treatment, you can opt for the VIP Weekend Package for $190. This package include entry to both events and all sorts of VIP treatment at the Motorsport Display on the 6th.

With the last year of the second generation TT upon us, we’re taking one last look at the car before it drives off into the golden sunset of classic car history. While it still looks similar to the original TT, the 2015 car is a lot sportier and more contemporary looking, while yet beginning to show its age. A little grey around the edges plays well for the masculine Hollywood types, right?

When Audi introduced the TT back in 2000, the car was a great addition to its lineup, as it helped reinforce the brand’s upward movement into the premium performance segment it currently enjoys. Audi let the car soldier on unchanged until the much-needed refresh of 2006 as the TT’s second generation rolled off the assembly line.

Now, as the 2016 third generation looms above, the outgoing car is left with a simple update to bookend its production. The S line plus carbon package adds what Audi calls “5-arm Dynamic design” wheels, unique yellow or grey exterior colors, and a fixed rear spoiler. Inside, the package adds Baseball Optic leather seats with Imola Yellow accents and contrasting stitching.

Power remains unchanged for its send-off, with both TT and TTS models getting the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four backed by Audi’s DSG transmission. As always, the TTS models get a modest power increase and slightly sportier suspension setting. In top-dog trim, the TTS makes 265 horsepower and 258 pound-feet or torque that is capable of launching the TTS Coupe to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Alfa Romeo appears to have some cards up its long-range sleeve for its wildly popular 4C , with “something new” happening every year over the car’s projected lifespan of “at least” the next four to five years. Giving an indication of what’s to come, Alfa’s first ace in the hole was the 4C Spider that debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show .

Alfa’s head of marketing Alberto Cavaggioni had a chat with TopGear.com about the topic. “We made a promise, and that was every year we will tell you something new about 4C," he said. The plan is to keep the 4C “animated” and continually changing so its enthusiasm stays alive. What’s more, those changes don’t exclude a souped-up ‘RS’ version with more power to act as a range-topper in the 4C lineup.

The continuing excitement isn’t necessarily to stay relevant with a direct competitor, however. Cavaggioni points out that even though the Porsche Cayman and Boxster are often matched up with the 4C, the Alfa gives a level of sport Porsche doesn’t match. “If you want a carbon fiber chassis, you have to get a McLaren . For the price and technology, the 4C doesn’t have any competition.”

The 4C has already garnered a respectable following, netting some 1,700 orders already placed in Europe, the Middle East , and Africa, with more markets being opened in the future. Sadly, there’s still no definite word on when/if Alfa will make a return to the U.S.

When Jaguar first brought the new F-Type Roadster to market last year, we marveled at its beauty; its swooping yet subtle lines that flow into expressive shapes, exuding what a proper gentleman’s roadster should be. Now as the coupe version of the F-Type becomes available, all those same feelings come swelling back, but somehow exponentially more. The coupe’s design seems more true to what the F-Type should have been in the first place. We can’t fault Jaguar for releasing the convertible first, but oh the coupe takes the cake in every way.

Speaking of cake, Alex Goy of XCARFilms draws a simile between the F-Type Roadster and a gooey slice of chocolate cake. The F-Type Coupe , on the other hand, “is like adding a whole ’nother cake on top of that slice. It simply is that awesome.”

Besides making us hungry for cake, Goy‘s positive comments continue throughout his 11-minute review — and for good reason. The F-Type Coupe he pilots is of the R variety, which means it gets the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 that makes 550 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 502 pound-feet of torque at a low 2,500 rpm. The ZF-sourced, eight-speed Quickshift transmission directs that feline power to the rear wheels, and with enough traction, will launch the car to 60 mph in just 4 seconds. It’s V-max tops out at a way-faster-than-feasible 186 mph. Meow

As suspected, the masterfully-executed video review is chocked full of raving comments regarding Jaguar’s new “visceral” machine and its decision to make a pair of cars so juxtaposed from the cushy luxo-mobiles in its current lineup.

The Porsche Boxster S and its hardtop twin the Cayman S are formidable sports cars with a capable engine, well-engineered transmissions, and enough track presence to out maneuver a majority of its competition. However, Porsche is pushing for more with the introduction of the souped-up GTS version of each car.

The GTS package simply brings more good stuff to the table. More power from the 3.4-liter flat-six engine, better handling thanks to revised suspension components, and a unique exterior appearance separating the GTS version from the less S models and lesser base Boxster and Cayman cars.

Diving into the details of the Boxster reveals an added 15 horsepower and 7 pound-feet of torque, bringing the total to 330 horses and 273 pound-feet. Porsche’s Sport Chrono package and Active Suspension Management (PASM) come with the package as well. Dynamic engine mounts, selectable damper stiffness, and throttle response are all modified at the push of a button. Put everything in sport mode, and a PDK-equipped Boxster will hit 62 mph in 4.7 seconds. For those who’d rather row their own gears, Porsche is offering the six-speed manual in the GTS, though its performance suffers a few tenths. Also optional are carbon ceramic brakes along with Porsche Torque Vector Vector ing, the latter of which utilizes the brakes and a locking differential to control how torque is applied to the ground.

Separating the GTS from the lesser Boxsters are a number of GTS badges, including one on the headrest of the Alcantara-appointed sport seats. Like other GTS models , Alcantara is heavily used. The steering wheel, headliner, and center console are all covered in it. Blacked-out 20-inch wheels are unique as well as they match the subdued headlight surrounds.

There’s a lot of news coming out of Stuttgart these days, as Porsche has revealed a multitude of new developments regarding its future engine lineup. One, in particular, that has gathered a lot of steam is the recent confirmation coming from CEO Matthias Mueller that both the Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman are in line to receive a new 395-horsepower, four-cylinder engine.

Speaking with Auto Motor und Sport, Mueller the Porsche CEO specifically singled out the Boxster and the Cayman as two cars that will follow in this strategic downsizing of engines. Both models won’t receive the same four-cylinder as the 919 Hybrid because that one was specially modified for that particular vehicle.

Instead, the Boxster and the Cayman are expected to receive a new four-cylinder boxer engine that will reflect the company’s new engine direction, a strategy Mueller indicated was done to adhere to increasing industry practice of being more eco-friendly.

“We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2,” the Porsche CEO said.

Mueller did not point to an exact number as far as the output that could be produced from these new four-cylinders, although he did say that the turbocharged engine could have in excess of 395 horsepower under its hood. That’s a significant increase from the current 3.4-liter, normally aspirated six-cylinder that powers the Boxster and Cayman, good enough to hit "only" 335 horsepower.

This, combined with the new GTS versions of the Boxter and Cayman, point toward just how important these two models are in Porsche’s future. These once-looked-down-upon models are primed to lead Porsche into the next generation of compact sports cars .
