It may not seem like it, but the Ferrari 458 is starting to show its age when compared to its competitors’ newest models like the Huracán and 650S . It’s conceivable then that this white stallion prancing around in the snow might be the 458’s replacement.

Caught drifting around snow banks in Northern Sweden, this Ferrari test mule is definitely helping develop something. The first and most noticeable thing are the front fenders. It looks like some engineer needed more room to mount snow tires, so a Sawzall was used to open up the wheel wells. Around the side, black tape seems to be holding body panels together just forward of the rear tire. We’re not too sure what’s going on here, but Ferrari certainly has something up its sleeve.

We suspect the 458’s replacement would generate more power than the current car and matching, or more likely, exceeding the 610 horsepower from the Lamborghini Huracán and getting close to the 640-horsepower output of the McLaren 650S McLaren 650S . A dual-clutch transmission is an inevitable return, and could either the be same seven-speed unit the 458 currently has or perhaps Ferrari is working on a unit with more gears. Only time will tell.

This does seem to be a very early prototype in the 458 replacement program, given it’s the first one photographed and its body panels are ill-fitting. Keep posted to TopSpeed for any developing information.

Scheduled to be unveiled sometime in the third quarter of the year, the 2015 Smart ForTwo is almost ready to go into production, as company engineers are conducting final road tests in different environments. Although our spy photographers have spotted the new tiny vehicle in all shapes and sizes, and stretching their legs in both warm weather and near-freezing conditionss, the ForTwo’s design is still a mystery. However, with the brand new Renault Twingo out in the open, we can imagine what the next Smart will bring styling-wise.

Why should we look at the Twingo to figure out more about the ForTwo? Well, it’s already common knowledge that the ForTwo and ForFour pair of Smarts have been developed in conjunction with the French car. All three will share a rear-wheel-drive architecture with an engine mounted it the back, while both the Twingo and the ForFour will wear a similar shell.

Because the two share about 70 percent of their components, they will be built at Renault ’s Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia. The ForTwo, which will sport the same body panels as the ForFour minus the rear doors, will continue to be assembled in Hambach, France, the tiny vehicle’s traditional home.

A new batch of spy shots of the 2015 Mercedes M-Class has found its way onto my desk, making these the fourth set of photos we’ve seen of the German SUV since the first batch arrived in early December.

Compared to what we’ve seen, these photos of the M-Class come with an even deeper camouflage with pretty much every body panel covered in the hypnotic camo. But from what we’ve seen in the past, our initial notion that both the front and rear sections of the M-Class are going to be updated looks to be spot on.

Since the current generation model was revealed in 2011 as a 2012 model, you can notice that the front end has a more elaborate grille setup with more accessible openings for the air to cool the engine. The main grille looks to have been split in half, possibly to create a unique space for the Silver Arrows logo. The headlights also appear to be more rectangular in design compared to the swept back almond look of its predecessor.

As for the rear, it’s hard to make out any distinctive changes, given that the rear lights don’t look like they’ve been changed. But a particularly interesting tweak are the twin-tailpipes that are now on the front passenger side of the SUV.

You’re not seeing double – This is the second camo-covered 2015 Porsche 911 we’ve brought you today, though this one is the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, instead of the 2016 911 Turbo . What this 911 does have is a reworked, more aggressive front fascia with more angular air inlets under the headlights. The turn signals appear to have the same design as the upcoming 911 Turbo S we caught testing, yet still similar to the current 911. And though it’s hard to tell from these new pictures, the previous set of spy shots show three bars lying horizontally across the inlets. Also very apparent on this test mule is the radar-based cruise control mounted in the center grille.

Out back, things look very similar to the 2015 911 Cabriolet we caught testing in January. Quad exhaust pipes protrude from the lower fascia, while what appears to be camouflage covers up the rear air extractors just aft of the rear wheels. The taillights are covered in the same transparent covering with the oval shapes to throw off any signs of reworked shapes underneath. Lastly, the engine bay louvers are hidden behind the same black metal mesh, protecting their appearance for a latter date.

Unlike in January, this test mule has its top down. The ragtop material is hidden nicely within the rear deck lid. Giving away its Carrera S status are the grey, 10-spoke, aluminum-faced wheels and round exhaust tips — providing Porsche keeps the same combinations currently found on the 2014 911.

It’s doubtful Porsche will change too much with the 911 Carrera S’ 3.8-liter powertrain. Naturally aspirated and making 400 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, the current 911 Carrera S scoots to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds. The possibility always exists for Porsche to increase the 3.8-liter’s outputs, however.

This isn’t an April fools joke, but Porsche already seems focused on the next iteration of the 911 Cabriolet, despite the refreshed version just hitting the market for 2014. What you see here is a 911 Turbo S Cabriolet dressed in very light camo as it rolls down a sleepy European road. And because the new car smell has yet dispersed from the 2014 911, we’d expect Porsche to hold off until 2016 for another refresh, at the earliest.

The noticeable changes include reshaped turn signals up front, new rear heat extractor just aft of the rear tires, reworked taillights, and possibly revised styling on the louvered rear deck lid as evidenced by the metal grates covering them.

Those front turn signals look quite similar to the one found on the 911 we spotted cold-weather testing earlier this year . The shape is just different enough from the current model to be new, yet it still holds that iconic 911 look. Around back seems to be the most heavily modified. It’s hard to tell from these shots, but it appears the heat extractor just behind the rear wheels have been reworked. Instead of the large grille of the current model, these seem to just be slats in the bumper. However, the slats could just be a clever camouflage of the vents underneath.

The taillights look revised as well. Just like the front turn signals, they are covered in a transparent film with oval shapes to break up any discernible pattern underneath. The way the taillights meet the bumper may also be revised since it’s covered in tape. Lastly, metal grates camouflage the louvers over the engine bay. It appears the louvers have been turned to face outward rather than rearward as before.

Something is brewing inside Volkswagen’s lab over there in Germany, and if these recent spy photos sent to us by our photographers are any indication, we might be in store for a special-edition Golf GTI sooner than later. The car itself is a little curious because the appearance of this mysterious Golf GTI caught us by surprise, something which you usually attribute to a special-edition model that’s in the middle of testing and development ahead of a unexpected reveal.

If that’s the case, we already know where the car is going, but that still doesn’t take away the fact that this model it’s suspected to be a more performance-oriented version of the Golf GTI. All the elements are certainly there to make that assumption. After all, the car was spotted taking in some hot laps at the Nurburgring and we all know that when somebody’s taking that route, it’s not because they’re in on a joyride.

On top of that, certain markings and components can be clearly seen that leads us to believe that this isn’t your ordinary Golf GTI. For one, there’s a new front lip spoiler, a can’t-miss, roof-mounted rear wing, lowered suspension, and a new set of 18-inch wheels, among other things.

Oh, and if you look just past the doors, you’re going to see a Wiechers sticker plastered on the sheet metal — as good a sign as any that there’s a racing pedigree to this Golf GTI. Wiechers, after all, is a German motorsport company that’s made a name for itself with its track-car parts and reason stands to suggest that there are a lot of Wiechers items inside this Golf GTI.

We’re hitching our wagons on this vehicle being a Golf GTI Club Sport that could make its debut at the 2014 Wörthersee this coming May. The timing seems to fit the schedule, so don’t be surprised if Volkswagen, who has a history of bringing along tuned-up versions of its lineup to Wörthersee, makes the official introduction then.

If you listened to the Episode 004 of the TopSpeed Podcast , you’ll know that we all love the idea of Volkswagen creating a Golf R Wagon. While there are plenty of questions we don’t have answers to - will it be sold in the US, will it get more power to make up for the extra weight, will it even be affordable, etc. – one thing is certain, Volkswagen is making sure it will be blast to drive.

Just after we got our first spy shots of the Golf R Wagon sitting still, we now have photos of Volkswagen blasting this thing around the Nurburgring. Yes, that Nurburgring . Talk about having confidence in your cars.

If you missed the first post, the new Golf R Wagon will essentially just be a stretched version of the new Golf R . That means it gets motivation from a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that is good for about 300 horsepower, and power is sent to all four wheels through Volkswagen’s trick Haldex-based AWD system.

Be careful not to drool on your keyboard. We hear it can cause electrical issues.

As we inch another day closer to its official debut, we have gotten even more spy shots of the all-new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. As the most powerful and fastest version of the C-Class , this machine is going to go head-to-head with machinery like the new BMW M3 , the upcoming Cadillac ATS-V and the Audi RS5. Mercedes needs to get this one right.

This is our clearest look yet at the new sedan, and things are shaping up nicely for Benz in the style department. Except for some heavy cladding over the front intake vents on the bumper, we can see basically every curve and crease of the new bodywork. In true Mercedes-Benz fashion, it is just aggressive enough to separate it from the rest of the C-Class family, but not quite as wild or outlandish as something that Subaru might make.

There are subtly flared fenders, larger wheels and brakes, plus a more aggressive front clip. The rear is fitted with a quad exhaust setup as well. If you have a sharp eye, you will also notice the small rear spoiler integrated into the deck lid.

Despite the C63 name, this AMG will not get the mighty 6.2-liter V-8 that powers the current car. It will instead be replaced with a 4.0-liter V-8. Expect the car to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Earlier this year, our spy photographers managed to catch the next-generation BMW 5 Series Touring while it was being towed to a test facility in Europe. Today, the next 5 Series was caught once again, but this time we caught both the sedan and station wagon variants.

As you can see, the 5 Series that we caught testing is covered in tons of camouflage, which shows us that BMW BMW is planning a pretty significant overhaul. Unfortunately, it looks like the 5er is still in its early production stages so what you see may not carry over into the production model.

Rumors suggest that the next 5 Series will lose some weight, thanks to the use of next-generation 7 Series -derived CFRP technology. We also believe that the model will feature an exterior design inspired by the Vision Connected Drive concept and an interior stuffed with tons of safety gizmos.

Under its hood, BMW will place an update range of engines, starting with a new 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine and capping off with a V-8 in the M5 — if BMW decides not to replace the V-8 with the new six-cylinder engine from the 2014 M3 .

The next-generation BMW 5 Series is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2016, making it a 2017 model year here in the U.S.

Updated 03/27/2014: British magazine AutoExpress revealed a series of new info on the next-generation BMW 5 Series set to be revealed in 2016. According to the magazine, the next 5 Series will feature a range of modular engines that use 0.5-liter cylinders, similar to the three-cylinder engine found in the new Mini lineup. BMW i BMW i s still weighing whether customers would actually buy a three-cylinder 5er, but at least the architecture and cost spreading is in place. Additionally, this will be the cleanest engine lineup in the class, set to deliver under 100g/km.

The current-generation BMW 3 Series has only been around for a couple years, but keeping with the company’s LCI ethos, it’s not surprising to see that the 3 Series is due to get a facelift. This fresh batch of spy photos straight from our photographers is proof of that.

For the most part, the camouflage on the 3 Series was left on the front end, but our curious eyes did find a few hints of change on the face of the 3er. Looking closely, you might notice that the front bumper has been redesigned to accommodate the more upright air intakes.

On the flip side, the unmistakable kidney grilles appear to be taking the inverse route as the intakes, looking more and more like its veering towards the grille design on the i3 and the i8 . Maybe our eyes are fooling us, but that’s what the photo is showing.

What we can at least expect are more details of the revised 3 Series in the coming months with the model set for its debut later this year.
