Welcome to the most beautiful wagon in the world. We know that might be hard to read as wagons are seldom thought of as beautiful, but with the new Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, those thoughts might need some additional pondering.
Unlike the old wagons, or even the current ones for that matter, the CLS Shooting Brake takes some of the four-door coupe design elements and translates them for wagon use. It might seem like an odd concept at first, but perhaps it’s genius. Wagons have long provided practicality, but that hasn’t exactly helped them fly out the door now has it? So, instead of pushing cargo space, Mercedes will be pushing style and that seems to work well in the automotive market place; just look at those terrible creations from BMW called the X6 and the recently announced X1.
The CLS Shooting Brake arrives eight years after the original CLS was dropped into the market and it borrows most of its elements from the sedan brother, except for its incredible 590 liter trunk capacity. The model will be offered with a choice of four engines - two diesel engines and two petrol engine - with the top version being the CLS 500 powered by a 408 HP V8 engine. How about that for a shooting brake?
UPDATE 07/20/2012: Automotive News reports that the new CLS Shooting Brake won’t be available for US customers. The decision was made while taking under consideration the "continued aversion to wagons by U.S. car buyers."

After debuting the standard CLS Shooting Brake just the other day, Mercedes has also decided to drop the official details of the AMG version - a model built to prove that even station wagons can be sporty and fun. The new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake version will go on sale in October 2012 with the first units being sold as the "Edition 1."
Just like the sedan version, the new Shooting Brake model is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine that delivers a total of 525 HP (557 HP if you buy the Edition 1 version) and is mated to a SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph will be made in 4.4 seconds (4.3 seconds for the Edition 1). Unfortunately, top speed is still limited to 155 mph.
When compared to a standard CLS Shooting Brake, the AMG version will be distinguished by an AMG front apron, an AMG radiator grille with single slat, an AMG-specific design for the bonnet, an AMG-specific rear apron with a diffuser look, and the AMG sports exhaust system with two chrome twin tailpipes.
UPDATE 08/16/12: Autoweek is reporting that the future Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake will have a starting price of 71,500 euros when equipped with the 250 CDI diesel engine. The CLS 350 CDI Shooting Brake will start from 79,922 euros, while the 4Matic all-wheel drive version is priced at 85,387 euros.
Gas-powered models will start at 79,250 euros for the CLS 350 Shooting Brake and 104,410 euros for the CLS 500 Shooting Brake. The CLS 63 AMG will run potential buyers 104,410 euros for the standard model and 108,990 euros for the version with 4Matic, while the top of the line CLS 63 AMG will cost a cool 146,300 Euros.

We absolutely just love talking about wagons that we’ll never get to see on our side of the pond. Wait, scratch that. It actually sucks to hear that Jaguar has finally unveiled the XF Sportbrake and Europe will be one of the few that will actually revel in its luxurious five door space. It’s not their fault that the British brand is going where the wagon demand is at its highest nor that we decided bigger was better before giving these in-between vehicles a chance, but we’re still a little envious.
The XF Sportbrake was supposed to make its world debut in March at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, but Jaguar decided to offer the first details one week before the actual event. While the car’s front is identical to the sedan version, the new XF Sportbrake is entirely new from the B-pillar and back. Under the hood, Jaguar has placed a range of four-cylinder 2.2-liter and V6 3.0-liter diesel engines with power going up to 275 HP.

The 3.0-liter BiTDI engine that Audi has developed has pretty much flipped what we think of diesel engines – that they are torque-loaded but underpowered – on its rear. MTM has taken the A6 3.0 BiTDI, which we don’t see in the U.S., and turned it into even more powerful of a ride, as well as helping look and handle a little better.
The A6 3.0 BiTDI’s body remains essentially unchanged with MTM’s package and we don’t mind one bit. The A6’s body is pretty sexy, for a station wagon, so we are happy to see that MTM didn’t go overboard with the body kit for it. The only styling change added to the A6 are a set of custom wheels. There are actually a variety of Bimoto wheels available from MTM for this package, which range from €1,729 to €5,230 ($2,140 to $6,471 at current rates).
Helping the handling and ride height is an aftermarket F-Cantronic ECU for the air suspension, which allows you to drop the car’s center of gravity up to 25 mm (0.98 inches). This increases both handling and gives the A6 a more stylish look. This ECU runs €1,740 ($2,153 at current rates).
Helping the A6 come to a halt is a brake upgrade that includes 380 x 34 mm (14.96- x 1.33-inch) rotors with 8-piston calipers squeezing them. This kit runs €4,900 ($6,063), but you can opt for another upgrade that includes 405 x 36 mm (15.94- x 1.41-inch) rotors for an additional €1,500 ($1,856), but to get this size, you must opt for at least 20-inch wheels.
The engine sees some significant increases too, as the base ECU modification, which costs €1,700 ($2,103) will net you 365 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. This is a 57-horsepower and 81 pound-feet bump from stock. You can pump this up to a full 381 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque for an extra €100 ($123).
In all, this package will run between €10,069 ($12,464) and €15,170 ($18,771), depending on the options you choose. That’s quite a hefty fee, but this will make your A6 a true screamer.
From a company that at one point produced tractors and military tanks, we guess it isn’t all that crazy to see Porsche expanding their automobile lineup to include SUVs and sports sedan models, but somehow the thought still sends shudders down the spines of select Porsche lovers. Well, get ready for those chills because the German sports car maker is preparing an estate version of their Panamera sedan and, according to Autocar, we’ll be seeing it in concept form at the 2012 Paris Auto Show. If enough people show interest in the concept, Porsche will eventually offer a production version for it as part of their plan to see 200,000 units by the middle of the decade.
The future Panamera Estate will be built in cooperation with Bentley, meaning that we could see a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 petrol engine in the upcoming Porsche model. Since this estate version is planned for 2016, expect it to carry design features from the future Panamera generation, which Porsche aims to be about 330 lbs lighter than the current model.
In addition to the Panamera Estate, Porsche is also planning on adding a coupe and a convertible version to their lineup.
Now that Mercedes has officially launched their new Shooting Brake, a few more automakers have announced their interest in developing such a model. The first rumors suggested that McLaren would bring a MP4-12C Shooting Brake, but now German magazine Autobild suggests that Porsche will also be offering a Panamera Shooting Brake version as a direct response to the recently announced Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake.
Before getting too excited about this, know that such a model wouldn’t arrive until the next generation 2015 Panamera, which would mean that a Shooting Brake version wouldn’t arrive until 2016.
The Panamera Shooting Brake will address those customers who are looking for the same level of luxury offered in the Panamera, but with a little more practicality. The Shooting Brake version will be identical to its sedan version, except of course for its wider shoulders and the larger trunk. Porsche will also be working on making the next Panamera lighter than the current model, so expect its total curb weight to drop about 330 lbs. The model will also be switched to Volkswagen’s new Modular Standard Platform and will adopt a series of more fuel efficient engines.
Station wagons will never be as sexy as coupes, but that doesn’t mean that the former can’t carry an extra slice of attitude. This is especially true since we’re talking about a car like the Mercedes C63 AMG Estate and a tuner like Wimmer RS.
The German sports wagon was given an impressive program by the German tuner, highlighted by a mighty impressive performance modification that you wouldn’t normally get on a sports wagon. In tuning the C63 AMG Estate, Wimmer made some modifications on the car’s cylinder heads and the throttle body. On top of that, Wimmer also added a pair of new sport cam shafts, optimized the air filter and intake manifolds, tweaked the stainless steel exhaust system with HJS high-flow sport catalysts, and reprogrammed the ECU unit. With all these improvements in tow, the German tuner managed to increase the C63 AMG Wagon’s output from 457 horsepower all the way to 615 horsepower.
While the highlight of the package is undoubtedly the engine program, it’s also worth pointing out that Wimmer dressed up the C63 AMG Estate in their standard outlandish garb, which in this case they’re calling an "Electric Yellow" wrap. Rounding out the program, of course, are a new set of 19" BBS CH Black Edition alloy wheels, H&R spacers, and a new KW Clubsport coilover suspension kit.
The Toyota Corolla is currently in its eleventh generation, but a wagon version hasn’t been offered since 2005 when Toyota decided to axe it. However, more and more customers have been asking for wagon models in the past few years, so the Japanese company has decided to bring the Corolla Tourer back onto the market. The model will be making its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and will be put on sale in early 2014.
The all new Corolla Tourer (known as the Auris in Europe) has been caught by our spy photographers during hot weather testing in Southern Europe. As you can see, the model is heavily camouflaged meaning that its exterior design will be significantly improved when compared to the current generation.
A few changes will also be made under the hood, but American customers will still enjoy the same 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, which produces 132 HP, found in the sedan version.
Now that we have seen both the Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, rumors have sprouted that the next CLA will also be offered in a Shooting Brake version. Just the other week, we brought out the first details on this upcoming model, and today we have a cool rendering that brings those facts to life!
Just like the sedan version, the next CLA Shooting Brake will be built on Mercedes’ new Modular Front Architecture (MFA) platform and will take its design inspiration from the recently announced CLS Shooting Brake. Under the hood, we will see the same engine line-up as in the upcoming CLA sedan: a 1.6 liter turbocharged petrol engine offered with either 121 HP or 154 HP. Mercedes will also offer a CLA AMG Shooting Brake which will be powered by a a 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit that will deliver about 330 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque.
The upcoming Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake will arrive on the market a few months after the sedan version, so don’t expect it before 2014.
Mazda has already spent some time testing the next generation Mazda6 in winter conditions, but now the company is turning up the heat on the wagon version with some hot summer testing. The best part is that our spy photographers managed to catch an interior shot while the vehicle was making its rounds.
It is believed that the next Mazda 6 wagon will be unveiled in August at the 2012 Moscow Motor Show and will be followed by the sedan version next year. As previously reported, the next Mazda 6 design won’t have anything in common with the current generation. Instead, Mazda will take design elements from the beautiful Takeri Concept unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Car Show. This means that the next Mazda 6 will get a new, bigger grille, swept back headlights, and beefed up wheel arches. These elements will offer the next Mazda 6 a sporty and aggressive look.
The interior, now clearly shown in these images, has been altered a bit to make the Mazda 6 more driver friendly. Drivers will now get a clearer look at the navigation screen, as it has been moved further up where the radio, clock, and temperature gauges used to be. Glimmers of light throughout the shot reveal that Mazda has used more chrome trims on this model year, particularly on the dials, gauges, and steering wheel.
Also, for the next Mazda 6, the company will adopt new Skyactiv fuel saving technology, including the Skyactiv-D Clean diesel engine, the new six-speed automatic transmission, and an engine start-stop system. For the first time, the model will also be equipped with a regenerative braking system which converts kinetic energy into electricity during braking and stores it in capacitors for use later in powering electrical equipment such as air conditioning, lighting, and the audio system.
