Aston Martin Rapide Shooting Brake "Jet 2+2" Concept by Bertone

More and more coach-built cars are getting green lights for production, leading us to believe that the market is becoming more open for cars of such unique quality.

According to Autocar, it appears that the Bertone Jet 2+2 , which we first saw a few months ago at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show , is set to be offered as a production model by Aston Martin , albeit in limited quantities.

By ’limited’, word has it that the car will only be offered as a 10-unit lot, meaning that it’s going to be extremely exclusive and as such, far from our reaches.

There are still a lot of hurdles that need to be cleared, not the least of which is the use of the name "Jet", something Bertone has previously used in its concepts. As far as Aston Martin is concerned, should it give the go-ahead to have the car built, it’s leaning towards badging it as the Rapide Shooting Brake.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering that the Jet 2+2 Concept is essentially an estate take on the Rapide .

In the latest episode of DRIVE, Matt Farah took a trip to the UK where he had a dispute with Chris Harris about which car is better: a standard 2013 Porsche Cayman or a tuned Audi S4 ? It’s not that we have to see this video to give an answer to this question, but is always nice to see what the two of them behind the wheel.

The Audi S4 has been tricked by the folks over at Revo Technik to deliver a total of 400 horsepower, while a base 2013 Cayman gets a 2.7-liter flat-six-cylinder engine with an output of 275 horsepower. That’s a pretty hefty gap between the two…

We think that in the end, Harris had to agree that a S4 is far better than the Cayman, because, as we reported yesterday, he decided to sell his Porsche and buy a Ferrari 599.

Next to the Insignia Sport Tourer, Opel is also testing a new addition to the Insignia family: a Cross Four version aiming against models like VW Passat Alltrack or Audi Allroad. This decision shouldn’t be such a surprise for you considering that in Europe offering Off-Road look on wagons has become very popular.

This car was in fact previewed by Opel ’s in house tuner Irmscher back in 2011, but now Opel finally decided to make it official in order to improve sales on the Insignia . The new Cross Four version will be based on the Insignia Sport Tourer version, but it will add a raised ground clearance, bigger wheels, black flared fenders and different bumpers with aluminum details. There will also be different and wider side sills.

We expect the new Cross Four version to arrive in the same time with the revised Insignia lineup, so keep an eye on the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Opel Insignia

The revised version of the current generation Opel Insignia was caught testing for the last time back in February during extreme winter conditions. Now, the company took the Sports Tourer version out for a new testing session, but this time on the German roads.

As you can see the Insignia Sports Tourer started to loose its camouflage revealing more on the updates it will receive. Still, Opel decided to keep hiding the parts that will receive most of the updates: headlights, engine hood, front and rear bumpers. Opel will also offer some minor updates on the interior, including new materials and improved technologies.

Rumors suggest that the company will also work on some improvements under the hood, focusing on reducing the fuel consumption and lowering CO2 emissions.

Expect the revised Opel Insignia to be unveiled in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The sixth-generation BMW 5-Series sedan - or the F10/F11 - was unveiled in 2009 as a 2010 model and the station wagon version, also known as the Touring model, arrived one year later. This would make it a relatively young model, but BMW is already offering a revision for both the sedan and the touring models.

Just like with the sedan , the Touring version also received only minor revisions, including: different structured lower air intakes, a modified front apron and more sharply contoured taillights. For the interior, BMW offers a new chrome trim, more room in the storage compartments, and new upholstery colors and interior trim elements.

BMW is also adding a new 518d and, for the top version, a more powerful V-8 powertrain.

Holden Special Vehicles recently debuted their enhanced and refreshed line of Commodore VF variants dubbed the “Gen-F” across the eight specialty models built to satisfy power-mad Australians’ thirst for large and fast rear-drive performance models. One highlight in the diverse range is the Clubsport R8 Tourer; a svelte but practical wagon that can be had with optional SV Enhanced power package, forged wheels and launch control to manage the 455-horsepower surge.

Much more than a facelift, the Gen-F series new nose touts the 2013 models’ significant performance enhancements, technology upgrades, and far better infotainment and cabin design on the inside. The big news is that HSV is getting real-time access to the latest GM innovations in a quest to reinvigorate the stalling Australian large-car market with top-end performance models.

Best known for donating its butch platform to the genetic scientists at GM, the Commodore has been used for Cadillacs, Pontiacs and Chevrolets with little commercial success but a big fan following. Until the brand closed in 2009, the Pontiac G8 GT filled an enthusiast gap in the GM lineup with its V-8 grunt, manual transmission and laugh-riot tire shredding – it even won its own re-birth as the current Chevrolet Caprice PPV .

The latest VF series Holden Commodores share a great deal with the 2014 Chevrolet SS . These HSV bruisers, however, count the 2014 Corvette Stingray as their closest relative for shared suspension, safety and technology solutions.

The Qoros 3 made its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show . The sedan is a Chinese car that looks to crack the western market.

The new Qoros automotive brand is looking to go International with their cars. Chinese cars do not have a great sales history in Europe or the United States, but the new brand is trying to change all of that.

The first car that will be available for sale is the Qoros 3 Sedan. The compact sedan was designed with marketing to China and Europe in mind. Unlike other cars to have come out of China that have a reputation of being knockoffs, the new car has styling all its own. Beyond what looks like good styling, the company is promising to build a quality car. If the quality can match the styling of the car then Qoros could do for the Chinese car market what Honda did for the Japanese market.

Beyond the compact sedan that is close to production, a 3 hybrid hatchback concept was also presented in Shanghai. A 3 Estate concept was also unveiled at the show, which showed the direction that the young company wants to take their cars.

High-performance station wagons are becoming more and more common with each passing model year, making great canvases for various tuners to take their customization brushes to. Next up on the list is a custom is an oldie, but goodie: a W211 (2003 - 2006) E 55 AMG Estate.

From the factory, the E 55 AMG Estate was one bad wagon, boasting a 5.4-liter V-8 supercharged powerplant with 469 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. RENNtech and ADV.1 teamed up to push this wagon to the extreme and make it a true grocery-getting rocket. The 5.4-liter engine received upgraded pistons and connecting rods, which allowed for a bump in the supercharger’s psi. Additionally, the E 55 AMG received ported and polished heads, SLR camshafts, new ECU software, full exhaust system from stainless steel and an 82 mm throttle body.

All of those upgrades gave the E 55 a slight boost in power. By “slight,” we mean a 40-percent bump in horsepower and a 43-percent bump in torque to 660 horsepower and 739 pound-feet, respectively.

What good is all of that power if the car can’t handle it all? To address this, the team installed an upgraded transmission to prevent grenading the standard one. Also added in was a lowering module to drop the ride height a little and a performance brake kit with 15.2-inchs and 14.2-inch discs on the front and rear, respectively.

ADV.1 added its own touch with a set of ADV08 Track Spec wheels measuring 9-by-20 inches up front and 10.5-by-20 inches on the rear.

Not too bad for an aging wagon, right?

Mercedes CLA-Class

We brought you a rendering of a shooting brake version of the CLA-Class last year and now we have gotten a little confirmation of the car. In a conversation with What Car?, Mercedes’ design boss, Gordon Wagener, admitted that the company is currently planning to add a shooting brake variant sometime in the future.

With the CLS Shooting Brake receiving rave reviews for its careful mixture of utility, luxury and sportiness, and the CLA looking to add a little affordability to the mixture, a shooting brake model is nearly a no-brainer. For now, the report stops here, but we can say that this one is all but in the bag, considering the rather reliable source it comes from.

We’ll keep a close eye on this developing report and let you know as soon as Mercedes releases a little more confirmation.

Mercedes C-Class

If you want to buy a German mid-sized sedan, you have three choices: Audi A4, BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class. Still, the C-Class has lost lots of ground in the past few years and it was about time for Mercedes to do something about it.

The next-generation Mercedes C-Class has been caught testing in many times, but until now we had no details on the engines to be featured in the new model. However, in a recent interview Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon revealed that the next C-Class will be offered with a series of firsts: the first diesel and hybrid powertrains, first time with an all-wheel-drive system will and the first time the next C-Class will have an engine built in the United States: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder developed in cooperation with Nissan.

Also, next to the current sedan and coupe variants, the next C-Class will also add a convertible and station wagon versions. All these changes were required to make the C-Class more competitive with the BMW 3 Series.

Mercedes will unveil the next-generation C-Class at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show; the coupe and convertible will arrive in 2015. The hybrid version will also arrive in 2015.
