The Shift

Smoothly delivering sporty power exactly when and where you need it.

Like the engine, the transmission is also mounted low. In addition, it is positioned in the wheelbase for less overhang weight. In turn, that gives great traction, agility and stability with terrific grip and a true sporting feel. Whether you choose the manual or automatic transmission route for your Outback, you can be sure of getting a sporty response that’s easy to use – especially with the paddle shift system on the 3.0R models.

5-speed Manual Transmission (5MT)

Nicely matched to the sporting abilities of the 2.5i models, this lightweight, compact transmission has multi-cone synchromesh for smooth shifts, and a centre differential with viscous LSD. The Dual-range Hi/Lo system is ideal for the Outback’s excursions on challenging rough-roads, climbing slopes or towing tough loads, combining sportiness and drivability in rough conditions.

Electronically-controlled 5-speed Automatic Transmission for the 3.0R models (SPORTSHIFT E-5AT)

With column-mounted, padded aluminium paddle shift for faster, smoother up/down changes, and SPORTSHIFT to let you switch to manual-shift mode when in D. The Variable Torque Distribution AWD transfers more torque to the rear, for sportier performance, and this unit is coupled with the Vehicle Dynamics Control System. Engine-AT coordinated control system also helps, as does the downshift blipping control regulating engine revs automatically for smooth deceleration.

Electronically-controlled 4-speed Automatic Transmission (SPORTSHIFT* E-4AT)

Standard on the 2.5i models, it uses Active Torque Split AWD to vary torque distribution as changing conditions require. SPORTSHIFT* lets you change to manual shifts as you want. The Engine-AT coordinated control system combined with ideal shifting programme at a sloping angle also delivers smooth gear changes, while the optional Vehicle Dynamics Control System adjusts the AWD to Variable Torque Distribution.

The Drivability

Secure, certainly. Thrilling? Absolutely.

Given its generous 200 mm ground clearance, you might expect the Outback to demonstrate some of the less desirable characteristics of high-riding AWD vehicles. But it just doesn’t happen. Because all the heavier items sit low in the chassis, to give a lower centre of gravity, you’ll find superb handling, stability and excellent traceability in corners, with less pitch and roll than you’d expect – making this an ideal AWD sporting vehicle, under different conditions.

Suspension

With a combination of high-rigidity long-stroke strut suspension at the front, and supple multi-link design to the rear, the latest Outback brings together a rigid body and supple yet taut suspension that offsets extra ground clearance with great handling and comfort. The result is a balance between sportiness and stability. Add in the self-levelizer and you can preserve driving poise whether you are carrying luggage or a heavier load in the back. It’s a ‘Crossover’ concept that’s perfectly in tune with sports driving and rugged practicality.

Lightweight body

The Outback’s lightweight body not only improves per formance and fuel consumption but makes no compromises when it comes to safety. We apply a range of different technologies to reduce weight in components, but without affecting overall strength in impact situations. Aluminium is extensively used – coupled with high-tensile strength steel and Tailored-Blank welding techniques, so that the Outback’s drivers inherit security, as well as agility and performance ability.

This outback driving is sporty and its interior is refined, but they still do not have the exterior design they should to convince any BMW or Mercedes buyers... they still look too .. korean !
