2015 Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Toyota GT86 By Cosworth

There’s a storm brewing over at Cosworth , the kind that can redefine the way we look at the Subaru BRZ , Scion FR-S , and Toyota GT86 . The aftermarket company known for its engine forays in the world of Formula One prepared a new power package treatment for the FA-20 engine that powers all three.

After some teasing in early 2014, Cosworth has finally bared the details on this new power package and it has come at a perfect time for the trio of sports cars . It’s a performance upgrade that has turned the normally tame 200-horsepower sports cars into a fire-breathing bullets that are poised to dominate the automotive scene.

Finally, we can alleviate some of our issues with the BRZ/FR-S/GT86 trio with a healthy injection of power, courtesy of Cosworth. Now, if only we can get the automakers to finally add some of this power straight from the factory, instead of slapping on silly body kits and flashy wheels.

Cosworth’s program comes in three stages, with the details on Stage 1 being the only ones that are available as of June 2, 2014.

Stage 1

Cosworth’s objective has always been improved performance wrapped in a reliable program. This package proved that Cosworth is capable of hitting that level, turning the FA-20’s 200-horsepower output up to an impressive 325-horsepower in three stages. The Stage 1 Power Package adding 30 horsepower to the FA-20’s output for an impressive 11.6 percent increase through only light modifications.

Cosworth created a “Power by Cosworth” calibration kit to better facilitate the transfer of technology used in the system. This results in improved peak performance that allows the BRZ/FR-S/GT86 to hit higher output numbers without hefty engine mods.

Adding to the calibration kit is a 304 free flow sports exhaust with a pair of four-inch, double-wall tips and a Y-shaped muffler to increase the output to 220 horsepower. By slapping on an optional overpipe front pipe with its own resonator, output gets another subtle bump to 225 horsepower. Finally, the program’s thermally coated 4-2-1 manifold header option polishes things up, reaching the threshold of 230 ponies.

In addition to the extra horses, the optional 4-2-1 manifold is 22 percent lighter than the standard one.

To help keep the performance predictable, Cosworth will also toss in a performance filtration system and a low-temp thermostat.

Along with the performance mods, you also get a Cosworth badge and a uniquely number Cosworth plate.

The FA20 program isn’t just limited to a Stage 1 package. Cosworth is also preparing a Stage 2 and Stage 3 kit, which are set to be announced this summer.

Two years since it first arrived, the Subaru BRZ has done nothing to separate itself from its equally stagnant cousins, the Toyota Toyota GT86 and the Scion FR-S. We loved all three versions when they all came out, but with nothing to show for actual performance improvements, it’s hard to get excited anymore about these three models.

Of the three brands, Subaru has the most racing history among them so it’s a little more disappointing that the closest its come to increased outputs for the BRZ are those race-spec prototypes that none of us can even enjoy in the first place.

But we’re not giving up just yet on the BRZ (and the GT 86 and the FR-S, for that matter). There’s still time to improve on that boxer-style, flat four-cylinder that develops 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. We don’t know when it’s going to be so we’re relying more and more on aftermarket companies like Cosworth to do the work for Subaru Subaru . But when Subaru does bring out a more powerful BRZ like we expect it to, then consider our faith in humanity restored.

As an example of this modular approach, the first option of the Stage 1 Power Package includes a Cosworth free flow sports exhaust that features two 4” diagonally cut, branded, double wall tips and a stylish “Y” shaped back muffler/silencer. In combination with the other components, this high quality, 304 stainless steel exhaust, with a mirror polished finish, increases power output to 220bhp. By adding the optional combined overpipe front pipe, with its unique spherical resonator, the new calibration power output is raised further to 225bhp. The black, thermally coated 4-2-1 manifold header option has equal length piping and CNC machined exhaust flanges, which helps to significantly reduce under hood/bonnet temperatures, boosting output with calibration to 230bhp while bringing a 22% weight reduction on the standard manifold.
