Even though Subaru->ke86 left the WRC->ke523 at the end of 2008, the six-star brand is definitely staying busy when it comes to the slidey stuff. In fact, you can find Subarus competing in local and national rally->ke191 competitions the world over, including a very strong presence here in the U.S.

Just take a look at the Red Bull Global Rallycross and X Games Rallycross. Successful iterations of Subaru’s legendary WRX->ke4657 rally fighter have been running in these series since their inceptions, and so far, show no sign of drawing down.

As such, Subaru Rally Team USA (SRT USA) is unveiling its new 2015 WRX STI rallycross car, set to make its world debut at the upcoming New York Auto Show.->ke226 Dubbed the VT15x, this AWD monster was built for competition in both the GRC and X Games, and is the culmination of years of secret development.

Built by technical partner Vermont SportsCar, the VT15x is the third version of an STI-based competitor for Subaru in four years. “We made huge strides in durability and competitiveness last season,” stated Vermont SportsCar Team Principal Lance Smith. “The VT15x is almost entirely new technology. This car is a revolution, not just an evolution."

Pros
Cons

Exterior

Pro skateboarder turned race car driver Bucky Lasek will pilot the VT15x, so it’s his livery you see proudly layered across the beefed-up bodywork. A rallycross-spec widebody kit helps engulf the orange Method race wheels, while the addition of a roof scoop, aggressive carbon-fiber aero and competition side mirrors keep it battle-ready. Fender rubbing is expected in this sport, so each panel is sure to be both strong and easily replaceable.

However, beyond the broader stance and stickers, I’d argue the lines closely resemble something you’d see in a dealership window. The basic form remains the same, which should make it easy for fans to hoot and holler when Lasek dices it up with opponents.

Interior

While pics of the interior have yet to make it online, there are a few basic assumptions I can make. Bare metal and composite materials are sure to compose the majority of the cabin space, with a fixed-back Recaro bucket seat mounted low and a racing harness installed. An intricate structure of beautifully welded steel bars make up the rollcage, crisscrossing throughout for both safety and rigidity, while digital readouts keep tabs on vitals.

Drivetrain

The powerplant under the hood scoop is Subaru’s iconic 2.0-liter flat-four, turbocharged to provide 580 horsepower through a sequential six-speed transmission from Sadev. When that much power hits the all-wheel-drive system, this rip snortin’ racer will hit 60 mph in just two seconds flat.

SRT USA says updates over last year’s car are widespread, with attention paid to the optimization of weight balance, center-of-gravity, suspension geometry and aero, all in the name of better handling. The wheel travel is long to provide a marshmallow cushion when regularly catching air. Additionally, the engine power was increased and the throttle response was sharpened, leading to higher speed and greater launching capability.

“The foundation of every great race car is the chassis you start with. Using the 2015 WRX STI, we have seen gains in handling and cornering in both our stage rally and rallycross cars; which is a testament to advancements in design from the factory” Smith said.

Competition

Ford Fiesta ST Olsbergs MSE

In 2013, this supermini took victory in nine of the 10 scheduled races, with 22 of the 30 available podiums occupied by Ford->ke31 drivers. Last year, it took an additional three overall race victories and 18 podiums.

Clearly, the blue oval has a winning formula when it comes to American rallycross, and odds are, this will continue to be the team to beat. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter Duratec-HE four-banger brimming with go-faster pieces to produce 560 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 620 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Like the Subie, 0-to-60 takes only two seconds, and curb weight is a scant 2,866 pounds.

Conclusion

Even without a car competing in the WRC, Subaru’s tuning division, Subaru Tecnica International (STI), is looking to share its experience in the creation of top-shelf racers: “STI is increasing their support of our U.S. based efforts in rallycross. Their expertise and development resources will take our program to an even more competitive level,” said Rob Weir, Subaru Motorsports Marketing Manager.

SRT USA experienced a continual rise in performance throughout the 2014 season, with five Red Bull GRC podiums, a silver medal at the X Games, and an overall victory from Sverre Isachsen at GRC Seattle.

For 2015, Lasek and Isachsen will lead Subaru’s factory race effort, with Travis Pastrana joining them for competition at the X Games and select rounds yet to be announced. “Confidence is high within the Subaru camp that we have a winning package of driver talent driving faster cars for this season,” said Weir. “Our goal in 2014 was getting to the front row of every final and being on the podium. This year, our only goal is winning.”

However, that’s easier said than done. Ford has been absolutely dominant in the GRC so far, taking three consecutive driver's championships and manufacturer’s championships since the inaugural 2011 season. Will 2015 prove to be Subaru’s breakout year?

The first round of the GRC is May 31 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. followed by the X Games June 5 in Austin, TX.
