A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is a type of passenger vehicle which combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. They have been the hot car to own for the past 10 years, but lately they are regarded as gas guzzler and substantially dangerous because of high potential to roll over.

The G63 AMG is the coolest of the of the entire G-Class bunch, but even a great car can be improved now and again. The folks over at German Special Customs did just that when they came up with an amazing upgrade kit for the G63 AMG that transforms the off-road machine into something truly bad-ass.

The base G63 AMG pulls power from a 5.5-liter, V-8 biturbo engine that delivers a total of 544 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. That’s well and good, but GSC decided to bump this up by way of reworked software and a modified exhaust system. As a result, the GSC-tuned G63 AMG now delivers a total of 620 horsepower, 1,000 Nm (738 pound-feet) of torque.

In addition to the engine upgrade, the tuner is also offering lots of exterior new parts made in carbon fiber, a new set of wheels and an updated interior with a 320 km/h speedometer.

The G63 AMG also received some upgrades on the outside, but we could definitely live without those. That body kit a bit odd looking, and those low-profile tires on fancy rims all but negate its off-road capabilities. It’s not our cup of tea, but it may strike your fancy...

BMW X3

The BMW X3 is getting a tech refresh in the next year or so, with nearly production-ready versions testing the new LED lights on the roads. Blinkers and low beams and DRLs... oh my!

We expect no major changes under the hood, so the revised X3 will offer the same engine lineup as the current model: a four-cylinder engine and an inline-six for the top version. Most likely BMW will work a bit on improving fuel economy and the output level.

Snappers managed to catch the upcoming revised version of the BMW X3 testing on the roads of Munich, Germany.

The car started to loose more of its camo, and reveals something very interesting:as revealed by the indicator stripe on top of the headlight, it appears that the revised X3 will focus its looks on the new 3 series LED and grille style.

"Iconic" is a word that is thrown around far too often in the automotive world, but after 100 years and dozens of colors and text styles, the lasting importance and brand symbol of the Chevy bowtie emblem is a sure thing.

As the bowtie evolved over the ten decades, its transformations were barely noticeable versus the complete revolution in transport they adorned - from the first Chevy ’Classic Six’ model to today’s industrial heavy-hitter with more than 50 global model lines.

General Motors’ Chevrolet brand was launched with a script logo with the words Chevrolet written in stylized cursive.

Legibility and pronunciation of this French name were a real problem versus monosyllabic "Fords " across the street.

Soon, a baby blue bowtie logo appeared along with Chevrolet written in all caps in 1913, but the exact origins of this bowtie are unknown.

What we do know is that the Chevy bowtie instantly means cars.

Along with Ford , Coca Cola and General Electric, the emblem of the Chevrolet lineup is a globally-recognized symbol of freedom, prestige and mobility.

Logo changes are often fraught with peril for the companies who fail to understand the symbol’s importance to their most loyal consumers. Just a brief look back shows disastrous results followed when Gap Inc. tried to remodel their emblem, or the huge drop in real-life sales following Tropicana’s disastrous package redesign.

With the new 2014 Cadillac logo (without the wreath!) in place on the Elmiraj Concept , here’s a look back at the evolution of the Chevrolet bowtie over the Chevrolet bowtie over the last hundred years.

Seeing a line of pristine Carrera White Audi ’s from across the paddock at Autobahn Country Club was almost enough to make a guy start jogging to get the first seat time. The brand-new S Q5 was on the pre-event list of attendees, and the new grille finish of the Q5 in brilliant white was very promising.

Within closer range, the “TDI clean diesel” script was visible on the side of almost all ten Audi ’s on offer for the car writers to sample. The A7 and A8 were common sights leaving the club gates, but at least one car writer was mildly disappointed.

Not only was the S Q5 not present, but diesel engines all around? Eek. One bright spot was visible: a gigantic white Q7 with some snazzy fender flares on anthracite grey alloys.

Also... a diesel, but this was more TopSpeed style.

A quick blast up to my gravel road photo spot was enough time to fall head-over-heels for the big Q7, even as its replacement is firmly on the horizon for 2014 or 2015.

This Audi is a creamy beast with torque for days even in the 3.0-liter TDI specification. The real clue to its fresher-than-average looks is the S-line trim worn by the tester, which brings along a host of sporty programming options and décor inside as well.

When a Cayenne is too bouncy, and an Escalade is too soft, look no farther than the Q7 TDI S-line for a seven seats and a ride that is ’juuusst riight’.

Click past the jump for all the beautiful sunny photos of the 2014 Audi Q7 TDI S-line, plus some first-hand observations on how the small-capacity diesel engine performs.

Ever since Aston Martin re-introduced the Lagonda name in 2009, the super-lux SUV has been stuck in limbo with no production plans set in the near future.

Widespread revulsion at its styling froze the crossover in its tracks from day one.

But even with the Lagonda’s future not certain, Aston Martin boss Dr. Ulrich Bez isn’t closing the door on both the Lagonda brand and the Lagonda SUV. Or at least not yet.

Speaking to Drive, Dr. Bez intimated that he still believes that the Lagonda has a production future, although a specific timetable can’t be disclosed just yet.

So, in short, Aston Martin still has hopes for the Lagonda down the road. It’s just a matter of finding the right time to do it. Dr. Bez did say that when the Lagonda does get its production date, one of its biggest draws will be the way its built. Despite being billed as an SUV, the Lagonda will be less "utility" and more "luxury", a straight reference to the kind of image Aston Martin has come to be known for.

That’s good news for those waiting for the Lagonda to return, but not as good as the string Dr. Bez threw out in saying that the door isn’t closed on the SUV and the model for that matter.

Out of the shadows of all the major auto shows happening all over the world at this time of the year, the Johannesburg Motor Show is scheduled to open its doors on October 16th, and at least one automaker will be in attendance to introduce a new concept vehicle.

That automaker is Renault and recently, the French company released teaser photos of the concept in question, aptly called the Duster Detour Concept. The vehicle is based on the Renault Duster , the company’s resident budget off-roader that was penned and developed by Renault Design Central Europe in partnership with a Johannesburg-based design studio.

Four teaser images were spliced together to give us hints of what to expect of the Duster Detour Concept. The two-tone Pearl Yellow and Matte Grey paint is inline with past Renault concepts, and the edges and curves appear to suggest some inspiration on the Dakar rally, as well as what Renault calls a mix of a little "Mad Max with a touch of the Terminator."

Nothing like cinematic references to get our interests going.

Fog lights were also included just under what looks like a newly designed front grille. A set of five-spoke alloy wheels with orange accents is also part of the concept, as is what the company says is a spacious and revised interior cabin.

The Renault Duster Detail Concept will make its debut on October 16th, at which time we’ll get to see how much Mad Max and how much Terminator was inspired in the design of the concept off-roader.

Land Rover Defender

It is indeed a sad day as we learn of Land Rover’s plans to end production of the iconic but barely road-worthy Defender .

Automotive News reported that recent sales stats of this lovable truck are in a tailspin during its last years on the market before saying ‘bye bye’ for 2015.

U.S. federal safety, emissions and import duties on small trucks keep the go-anywhere vehicle from roaming our shores with its lack of compliance to such thing as crumple zones and airbags. The one Defender we did get is long gone even in England: the V-8 automatic convertible two-door. Almost all green and very charming, these were the rich-guy Wrangler Jeep of the 1990s.

In the markets where it is sold outside the UK, like continental Europe, 50 years of history is almost a negative feature versus ultramodern crossovers. The Defender’s main problem is that it drives like a ’lorrie’ and is more uncomfortable and thirsty with diesel than one too.

Europeans have simply lost interest in the Defender, with Land Rover selling a mere 561 units in the first eight months of 2013, according to JATO Dynamics.

The historic SUV first saw production in 1983 and was sold within the US in very limited numbers. It was built on both a 90-inch or 110-inch wheelbase and featured a variety of different powerplants - both gasoline and diesel – and body configurations.

The Defender ’s extreme prowess off road and its rarity have earned it a cult following among enthusiasts. Such conditions have kept values for Defenders rather elevated for those in the US – even causing some to enter the country via the black market and away from Uncle Sam’s watchful regulatory eye.

However, there may be a silver lining in losing the Defender . A replacement for the hard-hitting rover is likely in the works and would be built well within the safety standards of governments world-wide and feature amenities buyers no longer consider optional. Power steering, a suspension that absorbs bumps and strong A/C are all features the Defender lacks.

Much of JLR’s cash is tied up trying to resuscitate Jaguar, so the Defender is taking a back seat in the new world of Euro6 and Cafe fuel standards.

"The Defender replacement remains far from ready due to a lack of volume and weak business case," analyst Max Warburton with Bernstein Research wrote in a recent report on Jaguar Land Rover.

Land Rover did show the DC100 concept at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show , but according to Warburton, the project has since been scrubbed.

He says Land Rover is currently mulling over an aluminum-bodied vehicle that would employ the current Range Rover’s underpinnings as a possible Defender replacement.
