A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is a type of passenger vehicle which combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. They have been the hot car to own for the past 10 years, but lately they are regarded as gas guzzler and substantially dangerous because of high potential to roll over.

Lamborghini Urus

The long-rumored and often discussed future of the Lamborghini Urus Concept finally got a huge jolt in the arm courtesy of Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann.

Numerous rumors have indicated that the Urus will eventually hit production soon, but it wasn’t concrete until recently when Winkelmann put all the speculation to rest.

"We’re working on it [the production Urus] and it will come, which will be good for the brand," Winkelmann told Automotive News in Japan last week.

"We’re going low profile now. I can’t tell you much on details now, but when we get close to the launch, we will have more."

Those two statements, while falling short of exacting specific details about the production Urus, are as clear as any statement we’ve heard about the fate of the Lamborghini SUV since the concept made its debut at the Beijing Auto Show last year.

The mere fact that it came from Lamborghini’s CEO means that it’s about as credible a statement as it gets.

So if you’ve been pining to see the Lamborghini Urus hit production, you can rest easy knowing that Winkelmann has confirmed its headed there. At this point, the only question is "when?"

At the end of 2012, Infiniti announced plans to change its naming strategy once again. The usual G, M, FX, EX names were dropped and all models will get new names prefixed by Q for sedans, coupes and convertibles, and QX, for crossover and SUV models.

Next to the Q or QX lettering, each model will also get a double digit representing its level within the range. The first model to adopt the new strategy was the Q50 — a sedan that replaced the G37. It will be followed by the Q30 Coupe, plus there are rumors that suggest there will also be a flagship model called either Q70 or Q80.

Now, Infiniti released a video that explains why the company opted for this new naming strategy. The company launched its first model in 1989. It was named Q45 and the new naming strategy pays tribute to this original model.

Porsche Cayenne

We are still awaiting our first "official" peek at the Porsche Macan , but all of the spy shots have pretty much given all of its details away. For 2015, it looks as if Porsche is preparing to debut another SUV in the form of a revised Cayenne . We don’t expect this to be a complete overhaul, but we do expect it to receive a healthy and much needed facelift.

The 2015 Cayenne , which we expect to see hit the show circuit sometime in 2014, will carry a nearly identical design as the Macan. The most notable of similarities, at least according to the spy shots, are the taillights. Much like its little brother — the Macan — the Cayenne has some stickers shaped just like the current Cayenne’s taillight covering up the revised taillights. What is it with VW products and wearing pasties over the goodies?

We anticipate the 2015 Cayenne to carry the current engine lineup into the 2013 model year, but we do expect a slight power increase across the board.

AS each week closes out, Mo and the folks at KAhn design roll out another fine example of the designer’s customization skills. This time, Kahn based its upgrade on the Land Rover Defender , and Kahn describes it as "a unique interpretation of an iconic vehicle." We couldn’t agree more.

As per usual with Kahn, the new Chelsea Wide Track package includes only exterior and interior updates, and the Defender is a good canvas for this, since it has never been about speed or power. Kahn took to task updating the look of the rugged Defender , and to enhancing its notorious off-road capabilities.

For this, Kahn added in a new aerodynamic kit with new front and rear wings, hood and side vents with mesh stainless steel, stainless-steel mesh for the front grilles,military-style headlights, and Kahn badges on the wing and tailgate.IT’s subtle, but it manages to give the rugged defender a refined look; kind of like putting an unshaven Clint Eastwood in a Armani suit.

Ford unveiled the Explorer back in 1990, and since this debut, the Explorer has seen five generations. The latest of these generations came in 2011.

The fifth-generation Explorer moved on a new D4 platform, a modified version of the D3 platform that is also used for Flex and Taurus . With this shift in platforms, the Explorer also received a completely revised exterior, a new line of engines and an interior that is both refined and very user friendly.

Like with pretty much all the other models in Ford’s lineup, the 2014 Explorer is offered in three trim levels: base, XLT and Limited, with prices starting from $29,600 plus $895 destination and delivery charges.

For 2014, the modifications given to the Explorer are minimal, and include a few new exterior colors and the shuffling of standard features.

Updated 06/13/2014: Ford released today details on the 2015 Explorer which will be available at dealers later this month. For 2015, Explorer will get a new appearance package for the XLT version, three new exterior colors, new 18-inch aluminum wheels and Class III trailer tow package offered as standard on Explorer Sport.

Ford unveiled the production version Flex at the 2007 New York International Auto Show and put it on sale in the summer of 2008. A mild facelift was revealed at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show , when the model received an updated exterior look with a single-bar grille replacing the old three-bar grille and "FLEX" lettering replacing the Ford logo. A more powerful V-6 version was also added.

Given all the updates offered for the 2013 model year, it’s no surprise that the 2014 Flex remains pretty much unchanged, with the only updates including new exterior colors — Sunset Metallic and Oxford White — and a series of new standard features.

The model will continue to be offered in three trim levels — SE, SEL and Limited — with prices starting from $31,100 plus $895 destination and delivery charges. Buyers can order it in six- or seven-seats versions, plus front wheel drive or all wheel drive configurations.

German tuner Cam Shaft is famous for the wrapping kits it offers for all kinds of cars. The latest kit, which is based on the BMW X6M , does not only include a cool exterior wrap, but also some pretty important updates under the hood.

Cam Shaft wrapped the X6M in its usual BMW colors: Frozen anthracite matte metallic combined with diamond-black matte metallic. This wrapping costs about €2,450 — about $3,300 at the current exchange rates.

The rest of the kit was developed in cooperation with PP-Performance and Vorsteiner. PP-Performance was responsible for updating the 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine, which produces 555 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque in the base X6m. The tuner managed to bump the V-8 engine’s output up to a total of 720 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque.

BMW X1

Rumors have been circulating about a the next-gen BMW X1 for quite some time now, but this is the first time we’ve caught one in the wild. Internally called F48, the next X1 was spied while being transported between two different test facilities in Germany on the back of a flatbed tow truck, so we still have yet to catch one in action.

The 2015 X1 will be built on BMW’s new front-wheel-drive platform, which is known as the UKL (German for "Unter Klasse" or "entry level"), and that same platform will see use on the new Mini and the upcoming 1 Series GT.

The new front-wheel-drive platform gives BMW the ability to offer more space in the upcoming X1,and reduce production cost. Though the X1 will come standard with front-wheel drive, BMW will offer all-wheel drive with the X1’s upper-level engines.

Expect the new BMW X1 to arrive late in 2015.

Full-size news this week in the world of truck-based SUVs: the new Tahoe , Suburban and GMC Yukons have all gone public with a bold revamp ahead of an on-sale date in early February. Remember this moment, because such drastic changes to these lovable family haulers only happen about once a decade.

Such a long model cycle makes sense once you live a few weeks in the life of one of these luxury trucks. For most of the Tahoe ’s and Sub’s out there, the key mantra really is Like a Rock. Just get the basics so right that buyers will forgive the shiny and nasty leathers, previous purple-power colored plastic interiors, and a thirst for fuel like a Nascar fan slamming morning beers in the infield.

The Yukon Denali and its siblings will soldier forward over almost any obstacle, tow any ski boat, and - usually - become part of the family identity itself after years of reliable service.

In a segment they once owned all to themselves, there are now far more premium entries to choose from than ever before. Bringing these buyers back into the fold is part of the GMC Yukon Denali’s mission: match or best the Mercedes-Benz GL and Range Rover not just on all-weather ability, but also on technology, performance and style.

Even a quick glimpse at the Yukon Denali’s glamour shots will give you a good idea of the refinements on the table for this generation of GM full-size models. The Yukon Denali gets the pick of all the best new tech, like third-gen magnetic shocks, blue-ray players and more USB ports than an Apple store.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR

The first rumors about a more powerful Range Rover Sport started to surface at the beginning of 2013 when the British magazine AutoCar reported that confirmation came from a Land Rover insider. Since then, we’ve caught it testing a few times, and today we have images from its latest testing session on Nurbugring.

Compared to the previous times that we’ve caught it, this time the prototype is singing its favorite tune through a new quad-tailpipe exhaust system, and there is also a nice space between these pipes for a diffuser.

On the front bumper, there are massive air intakes and there are some new heat extractors on the hood to help keep that hulking V-8 good and cool. There are no official details on the type of engine that these intakes and vents are keeping cool, but rumors suggest that the new R-S version could get a supercharged V-8 putting down a healthy 550 horsepower.

Expect the new Range Rover Sport R-S to hit a dealers in 2014, shortly after the Range Rover Evoque R-S .
