A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is a type of passenger vehicle which combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. They have been the hot car to own for the past 10 years, but lately they are regarded as gas guzzler and substantially dangerous because of high potential to roll over.

Volkswagen Taigun

Volkswagen unveiled the Taigun concept (pictured here) at the 2012 São Paulo International Motor Show and announced that it previews a new small family SUV. Now, it has been rumored that a production Taigun will arrive sometime in 2016 at a starting price of €15,000 - around $20,000 at the current exchange rates.

The production version will be based on either the Golf or Up! platform and will sit below the Tiguan . However, German magazine Autobild reports that Volkswagen will likely opt for the latest version, because itis rumored that the VW plans an SUV based on the Polo platform and priced at about €20,000 (around $26,500).

The production Taigun will measure about 3.86 meters (151.96 inches) long, which is about 32 inches longer than the Up! and 11 inches shorter than Polo.

Under the hood, Volkswagen will place a new family of four-cylinder engines, with displacement up to 2.0 liters. We also believe that the company will offer a four-wheel version, while front-wheel drive will be offered as standard.

Porsche Cayenne

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne was caught testing for the first time back in April and now, Porsche engineers took it out for another testing session. This time around, our photographers caught it on public roads in Germany.

With most of the new 911 family out and official, the Boxster and Cayman fresh out of the box, and the Macan still under development, there is only one model left to work on: the Cayenne .

The second-generation Cayenne was unveiled back in 2010 and it still looks relatively fresh and young, but now Porsche has started to prepare a facelift to keep it fresh for the next couple of years.

The prototype caught testing today wears camouflage only in the parts that are going to be updated: bumper and lights up front, plus new slimmer-looking taillights and a changed rear bumper. The wheels will also receive a new design, and rumors suggest that there are some new engines in the works too.

Expect to see the revised Cayenne sometime in late 2014.

On the eve of a new 2014 Touareg launch from Volkswagen later this year, here is a look back at the model’s mechanical and style evolution during its 9-year run in the U.S. from 2004 through 2013 – between 2002 and 2004, it was available in other markets. No fewer than seven unique engines have powered this PL71-platform VW behemoth in production form. Even including its stable-mates the Porsche Cayenne or Audi Q7 , no other SUV in the history of the automobile has packed more mechanical variations over a relatively short run.

From basic I-5 diesels to V-6s up to the monster V-10 TDI and W-12 gasoline engines and even a hybrid in the mix, the Touareg has been a true jack-of-all-trades and a phenomenal global success for the Volkswagen group. It is worth remembering that the platform development and manufacturing partnership between VW and Porsche had long been dead until this SUV project brought it back to life in 1999.

The first Porsche-VW baby of the new era was born a healthy, slightly pudgy infant with the Volkswagen Touareg. A name only a mother could pronounce, it is said as both “twa-reg” and/or “toar-reg.” If you don’t already know, the Toureg – the real ones, not the car – are a North African group of people that speak Berber.

Ostensibly a response to the success of the Mercedes-Benz ML series launched in 1998, the Touareg’s mission was to be all things to all buyers. The goal was complex: Range Rover comfort, BMW 5-series road-going abilities and G-Wagen strength when all paved roads turn to dirt.

Tested on public roads for more than a year now, the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg, a mid-life refresh for the second-generation SUV, is about to make its public debut at the Beijing Auto Show in China later this month.

As expected, the facelift arrives with updated front and rear fascias, the former sporting a slightly more aggressive design, bi-xenon headlamps standard across the entire lineup, as well as new exterior colors and new wheels.

Interior upgrades are less extensive, but Volkswagen has spiced things up with a new button/control configuration, while adding more leather and wood trim options.

Although horsepower and torque updates were also rumored, the 2015 Touareg will hit U.S. showrooms with the same engine lineup as the 2014 model. However, the minor aerodynamic improvements and the optimized eight-speed automatic have enabled Volkswagen to enhance the fuel efficiency of the SUV by up to six percent.

The Lexus LX 570 is an important model that’s reaching near-icon status by delivering a blend of luxury and off-road ability that sets it apart from other $80,000 full-size SUVs. It helps define the brand and add some much-needed cool points based on its redesigned exterior and massaged features for the 2013 model year.

It is easy to dismiss the LX 570 as a big player on the super-SUV scene that also includes the Audi Q7 , Infiniti QX56 and the Land Rover Range Rover . After all, the core Lexus high-dollar models like the LS and LF-A make up an increasingly slim portion of sales for the luxury heavyweight, as prices ratchet ever upwards and the competition grows increasingly fierce.

In fact, the biggest, toughest Lexus has a strong global following in high-dollar markets as diverse as Russia, North Africa and the Middle East region. The reasons are easy to fathom: unstoppable off-road, a seriously opulent interior, and the hard-earned reliability of the LX’s Land Cruiser sibling all bolstering its image.

The LX has been a fixture since launching in the U.S. exclusively in 1996 as the LX 450, a true bruiser only slightly dressed up for the occasion. The most recent iteration has been around since 2008 and is on a bit of a sales up-swing to nearly 28,000 units globally in 2012. The United States only accounted for 18 percent of that number, but remains a trend-setting market among international consumers.

As such, the 2013 model features heavily updated styling to bring the LX into the latest “spindle grille” and “arrowhead LED” styling themes embraced by the rest of Lexus line. Dozens of detail tweaks also help the LX 570 stay current with the leading luxury off-roaders.

L.A.-based tuner, Misha Designs , is offering some of the greatest tuning kits for basically every Porsche model under the sun. And the Porsche Cayenne 955 and Porsche Cayenne 957 are the latest ones to catch the tuner’s attention.

Misha is offering a wide-body kit that will completely transform the look of your Cayenne . The entire body kit is coated with white primer and is ready for whatever color you want to slather on it. As an option, you can have the front bumper lip and diffuser done up in carbon fiber.

Updates on the exterior include: a more aggressive front bumper; a vented hood; super-wide front and rear fender flares; stylish side skirts; a roof-mounted spoiler; and a rear bumper with matte-black diffuser.

Unfortunately, Misha left the bit and pieces under the hood alone, opting not to go with an engine tune. No worries though, the Cayenne is plenty powerful from top to bottom.

This new kit can be applied to all 2003 through 2010 Cayenne models and is available now.

The new-generation Range Rover Sport made its world debut back in April at the 2013 New York Auto Show and after only two months it already set its first world record.

It all happened yesterday at the famous Pikes Pike International Hill Climb course where a 2014 Range Rover Sport established the record for a production-standard Sport Utility Vehicle and broke the long standing record for any kind of production-standard vehicle.

The SUV managed to run the 12.42-mile asphalt course in just 12:35.61 at an average speed of 59.17 mph. The record was independently timed and sanctioned by PPIHC (Pikes Peak International Hill Climb).

For those of you who think this is not an impressive result, we have to remind you the Pikes Peaks features 156 corners and goes way up to an altitude of 14,110 feet where the air contains just 58% of the oxygen it does at sea level.

Tell us if you’ve seen this song and dance before.

The Rolls-Royce SUV , which has been killed and brought back to life more times than the villain in a slasher movie, appears to be back on the optimistic side of Rolls Royce management.

According to Automobile Mag, the British luxury maker is back to considering the possibility of building the Rolls Royce SUV, provided that the BMW X7 , which has had its own uncertain future, hits the market.

Remember, BMW initially had plans for a super luxury SUV a few years ago but ultimately canned those plans. But now, Automobile Mag points out that the market has changed with the introduction of high-end SUVs, including one from Maserati .

So, speculation of BMW revisiting the X7 might not be as farfetched as they once were. And if Bimmer does push forward with it and builds the SUV, Rolls Royce may finally follow suit and built its own, especially if it has a platform - the X7’s - that it can use.

Also, don’t sleep on how the Maserati Levante does as far as sales are concerned. In the event that it ends up becoming a hit, will Rolls Royce just sit back and let its competitors have the spoils? We think not…

About the only thing we know at this point is that the Rolls Royce SUV is neither alive nor dead. It’s stuck in limbo and for those waiting for it, that’s probably the best place for it to be on at this time.

In conjunction with the next-generation X5 , BMW is also working on the M version of the SUV. The model has been caught testing for the first time doing some quick and loud laps around the Nürburgring race track.

Although the SUV is still fully camouflaged, there are some distinctive M elements that confirm this is the future X5 M. These special elements include the quad M exhausts, the active differential, and blue brake calipers, which have become the signature color for M model brakes. Behind the M brakes, there are drilled rotors which are being used for the first on any X5 model.

At the front of the car, there are huge air intakes and a path that connects the headlights to the kidney grilles, a feature found on the F30 3 Series.

Under the hood, there will be the same engine that can also be found in the M5 : a twin-turbo V-8 delivering some 560 horsepower.

Expect to see the new BMW X5 M sometime in 2014.

UPDATE 06/03/2013: Now that we have gotten a look at the new BMW X5, it is pretty easy to imagine how the new M version will look. Today we have created a rendering of what we think the upcoming X5 M will look like.

It looks like this week Kahn Design decided to take a break from all the Land Rover kits we are used to seeing from it and turned its attention on a German SUV: the Audi Q7 with a 3.0-liter diesel engine. As usual, all the tuner did was upgrade the exterior and the interior, but it was more than enough to completely update its overall look.

For the exterior, Kahn prepared an aerodynamic kit that helps optimize the SUV’s efficiency, and make it look significantly better. On the inside, Kahn focused on improving the car’s luxury level.

As expected, Kahn Design will offer its customers the possibility to opt for any imaginable color on both the exterior and the interior of the Q7, but we think the carbon black color that Kahn chose for the example vehicle fits it just fine.
