A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is a type of passenger vehicle which combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. They have been the hot car to own for the past 10 years, but lately they are regarded as gas guzzler and substantially dangerous because of high potential to roll over.

The highly anticipated, next-generation Audi Q7 has yet to reveal its brand-new design, but a prototype vehicle spotted recently in Germany suggests development of the SUV is well underway, with no hurdles in sight. You probably remember Audi’s decision to send the SUV back to the design table because of its aggressive initial styling.

There’s a chance we’ll never find out the real reasons that prompted this setback, but the spy shots we just received in our inbox come to confirm the redesigned Audi Q7 isn’t something Batman would want to drive. And that’s because it won’t be out of this world when compared to its predecessor, and certainly not revolutionary in terms of styling.

Although the swirly camouflage keeps the details away from the eyes, we can clearly see the SUV is set to receive most of the styling cues seen on the smaller, facelifted Audis , including LED headlamps, large front grille and intakes, and reshaped front and rear bumpers. The big news is that the new Q7 will be a lot lighter, with the MLB platform rumored to help the vehicle lose at least 650 pounds.

The upcoming Q7 will receive four different powertrains, starting with the 3.0-liter TFSI and a revised turbodiesel unit. The range-topping SUVs will carry twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8s under their hoods, while a hybrid drivetrain will arrive to complete the lineup.

Ultra-luxury brands beware, another one of your comrades is falling down the shame spiral and building a - gasp - SUV! Sure that’s a little dramatic, but so are all of the people that are scoffing at the fact that Bentley has now confirmed a new SUV scheduled to hit their lineup sometime in 2015. If everyone remembers correctly, these are the same people that were horrified that Porsche decided to build the Cayenne and look how well that turned out for them.

Now, with a 37-percent increase in sales in 2011 (to 7,003 vehicles sold), Bentley is looking to double this number by the time this new SUV, rumored to have the name "Falcon Falcon " — comes out by making it "the world’s most luxurious 4x4" SUV and targeting growing SUV markets like the U.S. and China. The "luxurious" title will also match the price; rumors point to the starting price for this future SUV coming in at $271,000, making the $48,200 starting price of the Porsche Cayenne look like it belongs on a Kia Sportage .

So, what constitutes the jumbo price tag? Other than the supposedly tremendous amount of luxury built into the future SUV, rumors are swirling that a V-8 twin-turbocharged engine would be the standard powerplant and a W-12 engine is a possible option.

Bentley is taking a big step with its improving sales by giving an SUV a chance to flourish. Does the world need a strong competitor for the Porsche Cayenne? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean that high-end customers with deep pockets won’t be writing out checks for a chance to wallow in the luxurious nature promised by Bentley.

Updated 05/27/2014: Bentley launched a new website for its upcoming SUV. The automaker will update the site continuously with details on the future model. Described as the "world’s most powerful and luxurious SUV," the new Bentley will put its new SUV on sale in 2016, with a plug-in hybrid option set to follow in 2017.

Updated 06/30/2014: In a recent interview with the British magazine AutoCar Bentley boss Wolfgang Dürheimer confirmed that the company’s future SUV will be the most expensive SUV currently available on the market. It will be priced at about £130,000 - or $220,000 at the current exchange rates. This is a lot indeed, but its less than initially expected: £200,000 - or $340,000 at the current exchange rates.

As Americans give pause to remember those men and women who honorably gave their lives in defense of the United States, we take a look at the top-five military vehicles that our troops used. It’s by no means a comprehensive list, but one of that celebrates a wide variety of military muscle spanning over the last 70 years of American history.

These vehicles have demonstrated their ability to perform their duties with amazing skill, while traversing all sorts of hostile terrain from hilly landscapes riddled with mud and ruts to sandy deserts miles away from civilization. Some have rather specialized tasks, while others are more general purpose. Either way, they’re fascinating to look at.

These vehicles not only inspire cheers of patriotism and pride, but also awaken our inner child for all things military. And while there are tons of military vehicles the world over that demand just as much respect, our list focuses on those hailing from the U.S.

The Infiniti QX70 isn’t new, although the name might have you thinking otherwise. It’s still the sporty, five passenger crossover that first came ashore in 2003 and had its last major redesign in 2009. But amid the brands lineup-wide renaming shakeup this year, the QX has taken over where last year’s FX 35/FX50 left off.

Keeping the same overall idea as the original 2003 FX35, the 2014 QX70 represents the brands focus on continuous improvement. Over the last decade, Nissan USA has vastly improved in almost every area of its product line. Engines are more powerful and use less fuel, interior fit and finish has improved , and technological advancements have been heavy. Growing sales numbers continue to show Nissan’s hard work and attention to detail.

Being an Infiniti, the QX70 forgoes trying to be an all-in-one sports car/luxury sedan/off-road champ and simply dumps the latter, leaving rocks and mud to Land Rover . What the QX70 does, it does well. And that is providing an exhilarating yet smooth ride to five people in a luxury cabin surrounded by a sporty wrapper that neither goes unnoticed nor screams ostentatiously in other motorists’ faces.

Updated 05/21/2014: Infiniti today announced prices for the 2015 QX70 crossover which remains mostly unchanged. The only "additions" is a new Sport Package that will make the QX70 look sportier. Prices for 2015 will start from $45,850.

“Wait, didn’t that headline read ‘Bentley’?” Yes, it sure did. At first glance, this is just an Audi Q7 mule out for testing somewhere in England. Look closer though, and a few things start to look suspicious. First up are those UK plates. Audi is German, but Bentley hails from the land of tea and crumpets. Those fenders are also looking quite wide compared to a standard Q7. Perhaps this is just a clever disguise by the Volkswagen Group to hide Bentley’s first-ever SUV .

Diving into the details of the pictures reveals larger air intakes below the headlights. Also expanded are those fenders that cover a larger and wider wheel and tire package. Why have larger air intakes and wheels? At the mule-testing stage, it isn’t a design feature but a mechanical one. A premium Bentley will require the biggest and best brakes to slow the roll from a massive engine not normally found in the Q7’s engine bay.

This isn’t the first time we’ve suggested VW Group might be putting the 6.0-liter, W-12 engine into the Bentley off-roader. Remember, that engine is twin-turbocharged, and large intercoolers will be needed to keep temperatures in check.

However, this is basically an educated guess as to what Audi/Bentley/VW Group is up to. Stay tuned to TopSpeed for any further developments.

The luxury SUV bug has bitten its share of automakers in recent years. In all that time, Rolls-Royce has been the exception. But the luxury automaker is reportedly thinking about building one of its own.

Better late than never, Rolls-Royce.

News of Rolls’ new-found interest in developing a luxury SUV came to light after design chief Giles Taylor told Autocar that his design team has began tinkering with sketches of a potential SUV, possibly to gauge the feasibility of building one in the future. That being said, Taylor was also quick to point out that the team is still in the infancy stage of an SUV design and that any talk of "proportions and three dimensions" are premature.

Essentially, the SUV project is in its embryonic stage and there are still a lot of things that need to fall into place before this proposed vehicle is even considered for production. Taylor, though, seems to be confident that the project could gain some steam in the future. In the meantime, his responsibility is to develop a proposal that doesn’t "undermine the Rolls-Royce brand," but also embraces Rolls’ character of luxury and functionality, wrapped in an SUV package that traces its lineage to the company’s Ghost family.

All signs seem to point to this project progressing smoothly in the coming years, especially now that parent company BMW has become more aggressive in developing new architecture for its top-of-the-range models. The proposed Rolls-Royce SUV could be one of the first recipients of this sophisticated steel, aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic architecture. That’s one development we all need to keep our eyes on, especially after BMW introduced the Vision Future Luxury Concept , a prototype BMW showed at Beijing last month to preview this new architecture .

On top of that, there remains a growing sense of confidence among Rolls-Royce’s big wigs that a future SUV could play well in an exploding market like China , which the company has targeted as one of its most important landing spots, thanks to the proliferation of Chinese individuals with deep pockets and a taste for luxury.

If anything, people interested in this Rolls-Royce SUV will need to have a whole lot of the former because estimates on a price tag for the vehicle has reached as high as £200,000 ($335,560) with the possibility of becoming more expensive if Rolls-Royce includes all the bells and whistles.
