A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is a type of passenger vehicle which combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. They have been the hot car to own for the past 10 years, but lately they are regarded as gas guzzler and substantially dangerous because of high potential to roll over.

With Alfa Romeo finally selling its 4C within U.S. borders after countless years of delays and setbacks, it appears the Italian brand is getting its vehicle development plans into high gear. Alfa says it will launch eight fresh models by 2018, two of which will be SUVs. Though nothing is set in stone — as usual with Alfa — the first SUV will debut for 2016 and directly compete with The Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Lexus NX.

The trio will provide plenty of competition, but Alfa – under the direction of the Fiat /Chrysler team – plans to offer a turbocharged V-6 that cranks out 500 horsepower. Also joining the engine lineup will be a milder six-cylinder, a four-cylinder, and a diesel. While it’s unlikely the diesel will wash ashore here in the States, it’s expected to generate some 350 horsepower.

Alfa Romeo’s second upcoming SUV is expected to be roughly the same size as the Volvo XC90. This will act as the automaker’s flagship SUV. Both the XC90- and X3-sized Alfa SUVs are said to ride on the same platform. The architecture allows for both rear- and all-wheel-drive setups, while enjoying a sporty, 50/50 weight distribution. There’s no word on whether that 50/50 balance goes for the rear drive or AWD model, but the added AWD weight would likely skew it in either direction.

Past rumors have suggested that platform would be borrowed from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but there’s no telling what Alfa’s got up its sleeve. We just hope Alfa doesn’t delay its SUV as it did the 4C. Like Fiat, Alfa has a huge potential market here in the U.S. with a dealer network already in place. However, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne is quoted saying Alfa will never be built outside Italy as long as he’s in charge.

Updated 07/31/2014: British magazine AutoExpress reports that the future Alfa Romeo SUV should be unveiled in 2016 and will deliver up to 500 horsepower. Click past the jump for more details on the car.

Car wrapping is a delicate art that sometimes requires restraint. Lose it and your work becomes a little too abrasive. Hold off on the art and the product could look pedestrian. There are only a few companies in the world that can expertly strike a balance between the two and one of them is Fostla.De. The German tuner is one of the best in the business at this and recently, the company presented a new program for the BMW X5 that embodied the tuner’s affinity for car wrapping. See, the tuner’s program for the X5 comes with an anodized matte-red car wrap to go with a significant performance boost.

We appreciate the fact that Fostla prepared a comprehensive upgrade for the X5, but it’s hard to notice them all when all that red is staring you in the face. But hey, the program does come with a significant performance boost, which is more than we can say for other car-wrapping specialists who don’t venture into the the engine compartment.

The entire kit costs €8,500, which is about $10,700 based on the exchange rate on 7/30/2014. It’s a nice program for the X5, although its pretty steep price tag might dissuade some customers.

The Nurburgring has seen another record fall on its hallowed grounds, only this time the record-setter is the Range Rover Sport SVR . Yes, Range Rovers are SUVs, although you probably knew that by now. But the Range Rover Sport SVR is still something else and it proved as much when it lapped the legendary race track in 8 minutes and 14 seconds.

That isn’t just a fast lap time; it’s record-breaking lap time that has earned the Range Rover Sport SVR the distinction of being the fastest production SUV to lap the Nurburgring.

Don’t sleep on the Range Rover Sport SVR’s accomplishment because it’s an incredibly impressive lap time for an SUV that just made its debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed in June. It didn’t take long for it to make quite an impression, right? Of course, what else would you expect from an SUV that features a 5.0-liter, supercharged, V-8 engine that pumps out 542 horsepower?

The Range Rover Sport SVR isn’t expected to hit dealerships until next year. But as early as July 2014, the SUV has already established itself as one of the fastest and most powerful SUVs in recent years.

Don’t be surprised if the Range Rover Sport SVR turns into a sales hit when it becomes available next year. With a record-setting lap time on its mantle, there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

A mysterious Audi SUV was recently spotted doing some runs on the Nurburgring . The sheer size of the vehicle suggests that this model could be the second generation Q7 . However, a recent confirmation from an Audi executive seems to indicate that this is not just an ordinary Q7, but the SQ7 that is scheduled to be released in 2016.

So why do we think that it’s the SQ7? It’s a little hard to catch but if you look closely, you’ll notice that it has a quad-pipe exhaust system instead of the dual-pipe setup on the standard Q7.

Audi board member for technical development Ulrich Hackenberg has already confirmed to Autocar that the new Q7 will arrive next year. He also added that a more powerful SQ7 will come a year later. This spy video is the first indication that the car is right smack in the middle of development in time for its scheduled launch in 2016.

We don’t expect a whole lot aesthetic changes between the Q7 and the SQ7. But we do expect the latter to feature a completely different powertrain that could make use of a “supplemental electric charger” that will be used with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, V-6 TDI engine and a lithium-ion battery.

Audi has already previewed this powertrain on a couple of concepts: the A6 TDI Concept and the RS 5 TDI-e Concept . The two concepts actually carried different iterations of this new powertrain technology. The A6 TDI used an electrically driven turbo combined with a single exhaust gas-driven turbocharger, whereas the RS 5 TDI used used a sequential twin-turbo system with a large and small turbocharger.

It remains to be seen what kind of engine configuration the SQ7 will carry but don’t be surprised if its hybrid system generates a little more than 370 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque output of the rumored Q7 e-Tron.

At the 2013 Auto Shanghai, Mercedes unveiled the GLA Concept — the initial preview for the company’s fifth SUV. Just a few months after, the production GLA will make its world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show .

The production GLA-Class is built on the same front-wheel-drive architecture that features transversely mounted engines as the new-generation A-Class and B-Class . From the A-Class, the new GLA also borrows its engine lineup, but U.S. customers will only have one variant, the GLA250, which is offered in standard front-wheel drive and optional 4MATIC.

On the U.S. market, the model will be put on sale in the fall of 2014.

For the European market, the Audi Q3 was unveiled in 2011 after being previewed by the Cross Coupe quattro concept at the 2007 Shanghai Motor Show. Now it’s our turn, as Audi decided to release it for the 2015 model year.

With the incredible success the Q5 and the Q7 are already enjoying and the increased demand for compact SUVs in the U.S., it is really no surprise to see the Q3 on American soil. The Q3 is expected to be an even more successful model, thanks to its combination of a coupe-like look with the utility of a SUV and the usual features offered by an Audi SUV — "utility, technology, craftsmanship and performance."

The 2015 Audi Q3 will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show and will be put on sale in the fall of 2014. Prices will be announced at a later date.

Updated 07/29/2014: Audi finally released prices for the 2015 Q3. It starts at $33,425 and climbs from there. There are additional pricing details after the jump.

The third-generation BMW X5 is finally getting its aftermarket dues. Kelleners Sport gets the credit for this impressive program, blending some aerodynamic goodies with new wheels and an extensive engine update.

It’s hard to downplay how important these kits are for SUVs like the X5. For the most part, tuners can only go so far with installing new components on these types of models. What’s more important is how tuners are able to improve on the performance end, which really is the heart of every tuning program. Kelleners Sport achieved that, thanks to a variety of engine kits designed to give various trims of the X5 the extra oomph some owners need.

This is by no means the most impressive kit we’ve seen on a BMW X5 , but when it comes to offering a comprehensive list of upgrades on all sections of the SUV, Kelleners Sport did a pretty good job of checking off many items on that list.

With 420 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque on tap, the 2015 Cadillac Escalade is one of the most powerful luxury SUVs on the market. However, we’re aware that some drivers, would be happier with more ponies sent to the wheels. Those fellows have the option of supercharging the 6.2-liter V-8 with help from Hennessey Performance and its HPE550 upgrade.

The update adds many performance parts to the engine, including a high-flow intercooling system, gaskets and other hardware. But, more importantly, it takes its output up to a whopping 552 horsepower and 565 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to push it from naught to 60 mph in about 4.9 seconds, nearly a two-second improvement over the standard Escalade. Needless to say, it should keep most power-addicted SUV drivers pretty happy.

We might have to wait a while longer to see one of these beefed-up Escalades in action, but in the meantime, Hennessey Performance has release some dyno footage with the SUV revved to its limit. If you need your daily dose of supercharger whine, you’ve come to the right place. Hit the play button above and pump up the volume.

MTM Tuning presented its own program for the Audi RS Q3 a few weeks ago, and it was an impressive kit that played into the strengths of the German crossover . We applauded MTM then for its work not knowing that another noted German tuner was on its way to revealing its own program for the RS Q3. Enter ABT Sportsline, the same company that has made it a mission to improve every Audi model, using the sophisticated science of customization.

ABT Sportsline’s program for the RS Q3 doesn’t lack anything. Really, every aspect of the crossover was taken care of. Whether it’s the improved output numbers or the new set of 21-inch wheels, the German tuner didn’t leave any stone unturned on its way to decking out the RS Q3.

We’re not surprised by the things ABT Sportsline does. When it comes to versatile kits that offer a blend of everything, this tuner knows what it’s doing. That’s the case here with the Audi RS Q3, a sporty crossover that demands our attention. ABT Sportsline gave it that, and a whole lot more.

Although the brand-new Macan is already on sale in the United States, Porsche has yet to expand the lineup to include as many models as the Cayenne range. But that’s likely to change next year, as the Germans are testing what appears to be a more powerful iteration of the Macan. We’re obviously talking about the Turbo S, which was spotted in prototype guise on the Nurburgring track.

How do we know that? Well, although the crossover is slightly camouflaged, its quad, trapezoidal exhaust tips and front bumper design are of Macan Turbo origin. Then there’s the way the black Macan dances around the legendary course. The crossover acts like a sports car , attributes seen only in the case of Porsche SUVs, and slices through the curves with great precision and minimal slide.

The exhaust note also suggests we’re listening to a turbocharged, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. That’s the same powerplant offered in the Macan Turbo, but we expect the Turbo S to benefit from more than 400 horsepower. At least 430 ponies if you ask us, coupled with around 440 pound-feet of torque. Enough for the Turbo S to render its competitors obsolete, at least until BMW and Audi come to their senses and release M and RS versions of the X3 and Q5 , respectively.

Expect the Porsche Macan Turbo S to go on sale for the 2016 model year in the United States, with pricing set to start from around $90,000. Meanwhile, enjoy the Turbo S prototype stretching its legs around the "Green Hell" in the video above.
