  A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is a type of passenger vehicle which combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. They have been the hot car to own for the past 10 years, but lately they are regarded as gas guzzler and substantially dangerous because of high potential to roll over.


We’ve known this for quite some time now through rumors and industry rumblings, but it was never confirmed until now; Land Rover will create a new sub-brand called the "Discovery" and launch the new lineup to fill this sub-brand starting in 2015. To put this into perspective, this is precisely what the maker has done with its Range Rover lineup: Range Rover Evoque , Range Rover Sport and Range Rover .

We didn’t receive any real details on what’s in store for the new Discovery lineup, as Land Rover only confirmed its plans. Figuring out part of the plans, however, is not too hard. The Discovery lineup is going to be the more laid-back of the Land Rover lines, and will include the baby Land Rover that we’ve caught testing before — the likely replacement for the LR2 — a replacement for the larger LR4, and finally an Evoque-sized or smaller compact crossover .

The new Discovery lineup will ride on the Range Rover’s aluminum chassis that is resized to fit each model.

So, this means that we will soon have the Range Rover luxury line and the Discovery leisure lineup, but that leaves a big gap in the utility segment. Don’t fret though, because we hear that Land Rover is planning to use the Defender name for the utility-style models in its revised lineup.

This not only simplifies the Land Rover lineup for buyers, as they can now pick a Land Rover that precisely suits their needs, but it also puts all of the other luxury SUV makers on notice that Land Rover has the guns locked and loaded, and it’s coming for blood this time...

My only fear is that Land Rover may dilute its brand a little too much by releasing too many models, but by breaking things up into smaller sub-brands, it may be able to avoid the confusion caused when automakers release too many of one type of vehicle.

Concept vehicles aren’t necessarily one of Volkswagen’s strong suits but every so often, it builds one that people can’t help but appreciate.

That’s what the T-Roc Concept has done to us, at least for the most part. Built and designed as a crossover concept with the characteristics of a cabriolet — the roof is detachable, mind you — the T-Roc Concept offers us a glimpse of what a future crossover cabriolet could look like if it carried a VW badge.

The exterior design of the T-Roc Concept is definitely worth your attention, although how much of it would be found in a production model is a question only Volkswagen can answer in due time.

For now, though, we can all sit back and appreciate this concept for what it really is: a preview of a model that could arrive sooner rather than later, if Volkswagen realizes it has a real winner in the T-Roc.

The Lexus RX hybrid was one of the pioneers of the hybrid , luxury SUV realm, as is debuted back in 2006 — known as the RX 400h back then — when luxury SUVs with electrical intervention were still fairly new. Rolling into 2015, the model continues into its sixth year under the RX 450h name.

For 2015, Lexus continues in that tradition, presenting an SUV that combines the fuel economy of a compact sedan, the power of a V-8 and the comforts of a luxury vehicle all rolled into one.

This is the 450h and even with the rather lack of updates on the way it looks, you can excuse the company for that given how relatively new the refreshed package really is.

The 2015 Lexus RX 450h is set to remind us why Lexus knows its hybrids the same way it knows how to build premium performance for its performance line.

The Skoda Octavia Scout will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show and it should mark Skoda’s intention of becoming a player in the crossover market.

To be fair to Skoda , the new Octavia Scout does possess some notable elements, even though the crossover does follow some of the same characteristics of its predecessor. The notable rough and sporty exterior is a big plus, given the rather bland public perception the company has in the industry.

More than that, the Octavia Scout also gets a choice of engine and a four-wheel-drive system that should improve the car’s performance and handling credentials.

Whether it’s enough to attract a new segment of buyers is another thing; Skoda still has some work left to do in that regard. But it’s pretty comforting knowing that the company is trying and at this stage in its ascent, you can be sure that it’ll have more surprises for the Octavia Scout when the vehicle makes its debut in Geneva.

The Subaru Viziv Concept turned a lot of heads at the Geneva Motor Show last year and like a company that knows it has a good thing on its hands, Subaru is coming back to the scene of the show-stopping crime to present a worthy — we hope — sequel to the Viziv Concept.

The new concept is smartly named the Viziv 2 Concept and its a pretty clear indication by now that Subaru isn’t just toying us with these prototypes. The company has plans for these concepts and we’re probably going to get our first look at a new crossover that will become a stalwart in the Subaru lineup.

Accompanying the announcement of the Viziv 2 Concept’s attendance at Geneva is a single teaser photo of the concept, and based on what we’re seeing, the front fascia will carry a rather different look than its predecessor. The edgy C-shaped headlights are more distinct than last year’s funky look. For one, it appears that the whole configuration is more production-looking than before with striking LEDs found inside the curvy light fixture. Fog lamps are also clearly visible, although the design of it looks a little weird, if not a tad too ornamental.

More details are expected to arrive regarding the Viziv 2 Concept once the 2014 Geneva Motor Show opens its doors.

Audi Q7

Ever since the upper-management shakeup at Audi last year, details have been murky on when the new A4 sedan and Q7 SUV would make their debuts. Well, as Car & Driver reports, the two popular vehicles have been redirected back into development.

The A4 was originally on track for a debut later this year with its menacing new look, but Audi’s head of R&D, Wolfgang Dürheimer, was unexpectedly “moved to another position within the Volkswagen Volkswagen Group” for apparently ruffling too many feathers in the short 10 months he occupied the position. Now Ulrich Hackenberg, Volkswagen ’s R&D former front man, fills the role. Hackenberg made the call to postpone the A4’s launch in order to rework its styling and fine tune its suspension and assistance systems to ensure everything meets Audi’s ever-increasing expectations. It appears the A4 is rescheduled for the summer of 2015 with a hybrid version coming as well.

An oddly similar story surrounds the Q7. Another Audi executive named Wolfgang — this time Wolfgang Egger, Audi’s chief designer — was canned and replaced by yet another Volkswagen employee, Marc Lichte. Now both new in their positions, Hackenberg and Lichte are reworking the Q7 at the design level. Car & Driver’s insider reports the new design will be softer and less aggressive than Egger’s original plans. This is the Q7’s second delay attributed to its exterior design. There’s no real word on when the Q7 will eventually see production, but at this rate, we’re expecting it to fly and cure cancer.

The Subaru Outback has always been the Boy Scout of the car/wagon/crossover crew, with its standard AWD and rugged, foul-weather-defeating demeanor. While that demeanor won’t likely change, reports say the Outback is getting a Legacy -style work-over for the 2015 model year and will make its grand entrance at the 2014 New York Auto Show this spring.

Since the Outback is essentially the wagon version of the Legacy, it makes sense the recent changes to the 2015 Legacy would make their way over to the Outback. What this means for the Outback is a new exterior look with a similar reworked grille, headlights and raked windshield. The extra body cladding and plastic bits that make an Outback look like an Outback will surely make their return.

Inside, the same redesigned dashboard, instrument panel and center console with softer touch, more premium materials will be present. The coupe -like look of the new Legacy obviously won’t make the jump as cargo room and rear passenger headroom are bigger priorities in the Outback.

History tells us the powertrain offerings will be identical as well. The new Legacy offers two engine choices: a 2.5-liter flat-four making 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque and the 3.6-liter flat-six putting out 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately, both engines are stuck with CVT transmissions with no conventional manual on the horizon.

Updated 04/03/2014: Subaru has officially confirmed that the 2015 Outback will be officially unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show. With the occasion a first teaser image reveals that the new Outback will follow the steps of the more-recently unveiled Legacy sedan.

BMW 4 Series Coupe

Every year, hundreds of motoring journalists from all over the world descend upon New York City for the New York International Auto Show . Among the new car reveals, fancy parties and exciting concepts, the New York Auto Show also plays host to the World Car of the Year Awards.

This prestigious award is handed out by a collection of experienced automotive journalists from around the world. Some of this year’s jurors include writers from countries like Japan, Russia, South Africa, China, Australia and more. Overall there are nearly 70 jurors in total.

Some of the previous year’s winners include the Mk VII Volkswagen Golf and the Nissan Leaf .

Of all the cars that were eligible for this year’s award, twelve have been selected as finalists. We have brought together all twelve of the final candidates for you here, and we also included a little bit information about each one.

BMW X4

BMW has become the king of pointless niche-market cars in recent years and it doesn’t look like the Bavarians have any plans of stopping. No they haven’t announced a new 3 Series coupe, but we do have spy shots of the upcoming X4 soft-roader doing a bit of cold-weather romping through the snow.

The X4 is a swoopier version of the X3 much the same way that the X6 was a swoopier version of the X5 . This new, and very pointless, coupe-like SUV is designed to attract young and enthusiastic individuals who want the practicality that comes with an SUV without all that pesky ugliness that comes with having a truly utilitarian vehicle.

In these latest shots, we can see that the car has lost even more of its camo, and we have a nice solid look at the front end. It is pretty clear that the production X4 will look very similar to its concept version , not exactly a surprise.

I think the X4 is a pretty stupid idea, but the Range Rover Evoque has proved that there is a market for small, mostly useless SUVs. Of course the Evoque is supermodel attractive, and the X4 looks like the lump on Quasimodo’s back, so that may make a difference in when it goes on sale.

The 2014 Honda Pilot has a lot going for it, and buyers will be wise to open a space in their minds to this midsized SUV .

Here’s the thing: the Pilot may be classified as such, but really there are hints of full-sized characteristics in this baby. Start with the interior, which has ample enough space to comfortably fit up to eight passengers. That’s full-sized right there. Also factor in the typical Honda stamp of reliability and fuel efficiency, which, again, is a star on the Pilot’s windshield.

It’s hard to find a whole lot of things to be wary of on the Pilot. But if there is one, you have to look outside where the Pilot isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire with its aesthetics. Sure, the dimensions are right, and it does have nice maneuverability, but the fascia looks totally boring.

Still and all, buyers who have to think of family trips on their next SUV purchase would be wise to consider the Pilot, snoozy looks notwithstanding.
