The Toyota GT 86 sure is getting a ton of mileage ever since it was introduced last year. The sports coupe’s popularity in the market has even given Toyota the justification to build a special edition GT 86 that celebrates the automaker’s participation at the VLN Endurance Championship this year.
What it didn’t tell us was that the GT 86 Cup Edition would also serve the role as the VLN Endurance Championship’s official pace car, as shown in the pair of photos that were released of the heavily dressed GT 86 Cup Edition.
Officially, it’s called the GT 86 Cup Edition Pace Car and it comes with some features that are unique to it. Thanks to TRD, the GT 86 Cup Edition Pace Car received a new rear diffuser, front and rear aprons, new side skirts, a bigger trunk-lid spoiler, quad exhaust pipes, a stabilizer set, a carbon-fiber strut bar, and last but not least, exterior foil wrapping that separates it and distinguishes itself as the series’ official pace car.
As far as power goes, the GT 86 Cup Edition Pace Car will carry the same 2.0-liter inline four engine that produces 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque with a 0-to-60 mph time of 7 seconds and a top speed of slightly over 143 mph.

For years, Nobuhiro ’Monster’ Tajima was considered the king of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. All that, however, changed last year when Rhys Millen broke Tajima’s world record up the hill with a time of 9:46.164 in a modified Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
But if you thought that the Japanese legend would take that defeat sitting down, you got another thing coming. And by ’another thing’, we mean the Monster Sport Super 86.
That’s the name of the Toyota GT 86-sourced race Monster Tajima will be bringing to Pikes Peak this year. Yep, say good bye to the Sport E-RUNNER because the man, the myth, and the legend will be driving a brand new bad boy in his quest to reclaim the Pikes Peak record.
Looking at the Super 86, you’d be hard-pressed to think that it’s an actual GT 86. There are styling similarities, particularly the use of the sports car’s front end, but for the most part, the similarities come few and far in between.
Plus, the Super 86 is designed to compete in the Pikes Peak Unlimited Class, which pretty much means that engineers have free reign to build a car that can throw down with the best of ’em.
There are very few specific details about the Super 86, but there are whispers that the racecar is set to be powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that carries an output of 670 horsepower to go with an all-wheel-drive system.

The widely anticipated convertible version of the Toyota GT 86 has become a real conversation piece for a lot of folks in the industry. It’s not so much the expectations of following up the popularity of the coupe model as it is the prospective look of the convertible when it has all of its faculties in order.
Recently, Toyota Europe filed renderings of the GT-86 Open Top Concept for patent application and the fine folks over at Car and Driver managed to dig up black and white renderings of the car.
For one, the cloth-top roof is fully closed, revealing what the car would look like in that particular guise. We gotta say, it looks similar, but there’s a noticeable difference to the coupe, particularly on how the cloth roof looks a little more flat than the hard roof of the coupe model.
Perhaps the difference is in the eye of the beholder, something that we freely admit could be the case. But as far as we’re concerned, the convertible looks sexier than the coupe, if these filings do in fact point to the production version of the former.
In any case, separating the two is a matter of aesthetics, considering that the convertible is expected to receive the same 200-horsepower 2.0-liter in-line-four engine that the coupe model already has.

Until Toyota finally decides to offer a more powerful version of its GT86 sports car, the company is teasing us with all kinds of special editions. It’s latest carrot-dangling act, the GT 86 Cup Edition, made its debut today and is touted as a model built to celebrate Toyota’s participation at the VLN Endurance Championship on March 23rd.
The model adds numerous exterior and interior features, which seems par for the course when it comes to these special-edition GT86s. But on top of all the aesthetic goodies, each customer will also get a ticket for a VIP customer event for two at the Nürburgring. Pretty enticing deal, if you ask us.
On the exterior, the new GT86 Cup Edition will offer three special colors: "Dynamic White Pearl", "Furious Black Mica" and "Racing Red", all three of which have been combined with racing stripes and a boot-lid spoiler. Meanwhile, the interior gets a plush Alcantara trim on the steering wheel rim, upper sections of the door, seats and the dashboard, driving up the sports coupe’s luxury appeal. Each unit will also get a brushed aluminum badge showing the car’s serial number. Last but not least, the model will carry a set of 18-inch OZ Ultraleggera racing alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Nero GT tires.
The new GT86 Cup Edition will be limited to only 86 units and will add another €2,860 over the car’s standard price (about $3,700 at the current exchange rates).
Marangoni Tyre used the 2013 Geneva Motor Show to reveal its latest creation: the Toyota GT86-R Eco Explorer. The tuner finds the GT-86 sports car just perfect from factory, but it wanted to offer it that unmistakable Italian style that transformed the car into something unforgettable.
The new Eco Explorer has been defined as the "quintessence of elegance, fashion and sport, but also environmental-friendliness." The tuner uses an innovative ammonia fuel technology by Bigas International that delivers "zero emissions.”
Per the tuner, one liter of ammonia costs just 20 cents, and with a full tank, the GT86-R can travel up to 180 kilometers (111 miles). At engine speeds up to 2,800 rpm, the car travels on ammonia only, and at greater speeds, the car switches to direct-injected gasoline.
The car will be offered with a special set of flame-red 19-inch tires called "M-Power EvoRed". These special tires were developed using the third-generation functionalized polymers that offer a better interaction between silica and polymer. This way the car delivers a class-B rating for rolling resistance and class-A rating for wet braking.
Yesterday, at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Toyota unveiled the open-top version of its new GT86 sports car. Of course, everyone expects to see this version put into production very soon. What now looks like a certain thing was once pretty uncertain; maybe this is why Toyota opted to initially offer a concept version first.
According to Toyota chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, the company would only think about other variants after the GT86 proved itself a successful model. Now that it has shown its worth and an open-top concept is upon us, it looks like more versions are inevitable.
It looks like along with the convertible version, the future will also bring a more powerful version. He suggested that such a model could use a hybrid system similar to the "IMA" system used on the Honda CRZ. This is a potential suitor because an electric motor assist could provide substantial low-rpm torque boost for the boxer engine without affecting throttle response, fuel economy or emissions.
Since such a system will add a considerable weight, Toyota engineers will have to look for solutions to reduce the final weight so it does not affect the weight distribution. Fortunately, TRD has had no issue removing 100 kg (220 pounds) from the GT86, so dropping the necessary poundage shouldn’t be too tough.
Whether the Toyota GT 86 has the long-lasting popularity that the Mazda MX-5 currently enjoys is still debatable at this point. After all, the former’s only been alive for a little over a year, while the latter has been around almost 25 years now.
But the early returns on the GT 86 have been very promising, a testament to the kind of popularity Toyota’s sports coupe has enjoyed in its short lifespan. It’s become such a hit that the clamoring for a convertible version has been deafening for a while now.
Well, Toyota listened, fellas. The 2013 Geneva Motor Show will see the debut of the concept version of a convertible GT 86, which Toyota is internally calling the FT-86 Open Top Concept. It’s called the FT 86 Open Top Concept and Toyota has gone on record suggesting that the model "previews a possible future development of the award-winning FT 86 sports coupe" with the intention of gauging the public’s reaction on how an open-top GT 86 will be received.
Incidentally, Toyota also said that a prototype for the convertible FT 86 is already being tested so we’re not entirely sure what Toyota meant about "gauging the public’s reaction." With tests in progress, that appears to be a rhetorical statement.

In the beginning of February, Toyota announced it would unveil a GT 86 Open Top Concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Nothing too shocking, considering everyone figured the sporty Toyota was going to eventually get an open-top variant.
The craziness start here, as one very lucky guy managed to catch this GT 86 Convertible somewhere in Cape Town, South Africa and as you can see, this car is completely uncovered. The car was closely guarded, but the temptation was too big we guess, so this he managed to shot three images of the car.
Now we are wondering why Toyota decided to come with a concept variant when the production version is also ready. We’re just hoping it won’t do the same as it did with the coupe version and will show us a bunch of concepts before actually revealing the real deal.
We guess we will find more about it next month in Geneva.
Toyota, in collaboration with Buckingham-based motorsport engineering pioneer GPRM, has announced the launch of the first GT4 racing version of the GT86 sports car. The car will make its track debut later this month
The new GT86 GT4 is powered by a 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged four-cylinder “Boxer” engine that will deliver somewhere between 360 and 400 horsepower, depending on the "balance of performance testing."
When compared to a standard GT 86, the GT4 version has received an impressive aerodynamic kit with large front and rear bumpers, new side skirts and a huge rear wing for better stability at high speeds. The car will sit on a set of racing wheels wrapped in high-performance tires from Avon.
The new Toyota racecar will be used in British GT and in the many GT4 series where it will have to face cars like Lotus Evora GT4 or Nissan 370Z — among many others.
There is arguing about the striking differences between Toyota’s GT 86 and Lexus’ LF-A supercar. Honestly, the former doesn’t even belong in the latter’s category.
Even though there’s a huge disparity in performance, it doesn’t mean that the GT 86 can’t look the part of the LF-A, which is something the imaginative people from DAMD decided to do when they went and gave the GT 86 a full LF-A makeover.
At first glance, you can hardly tell the difference between this rechristened "LFT-86" from the standard version. Once you take a closer look, however, you’ll notice that the cars bumper and the triangular-shaped side vents are near replicas of the mighty Lexus supercar’s bumper and side vents. The side skirts have also been fitted to mimic the LF-A, as has the rear bumper with the honeycomb vents, the diffuser, and, last but not least, the inverted pyramid-style tri-tailpipes.
About the only thing missing is the 560-horsepower, 4.8-liter V-10 engine of the LF-A. Guess anybody who gets this kit will have to settle for the 200 ponies of the GT 86.
