While the new FT-1 Concept car was specially designed for the new Gran Turismo 6 racing game, we have a strange feeling that it previews the new-generation Supra->ke355. In fact, Toyota ->ke88 announced that the concept car previews the company's future design language, meaning that a new sports car may be right around the corner.

The new concept car is named the FT-1 and the name was explained as follows: FT stands for "Future Toyota," and the number "1" represents the ultimate. According to Toyota, the design team started to work on this new concept car about two years ago, and it's pretty clear that it is a continuation of the FT-HS launched in 2007, with some design elements taken from the 2012 Lexus LF-LC.

The concept was designed by the Calty design team and comes just in time to celebrate the team's 40th anniversary. It was officially unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show->ke222.

Updated 08/14/2014: Toyota unveiled a second version of the FT-1 Concept, this time featuring a graphite exterior paint and a new interior with natural leather on the seat combined with brown edges.

Pros
Cons

Exterior

The new FT-1 concept car is defined by a "function-sculpting" design language with curved, muscular, and expressive body that looks astonishing, especially when viewed from the side.

The concept features a very aggressive front look with large inlets, ducting and vents that ensure a proper cooling for the engine. It is pretty clear that the concept can hit incredible speeds as it comes equipped with a retractable rear wing that deploys and tilts forward to create additional downforce.

What we really like about the concept is that cool red hue that makes it looks even fast just sitting there.

Interior

Just like the exterior, the interior is also specific for a high-end sports car. It gets an F1-inspired steering wheel, a slung cockpit with the A-pillars set far back to help optimize cornering vision, a delta-shaped display zone and a cockpit specially tuned for the driver.

The concept is also equipped with composite seat, a color heads-up display that keeps the driver’s attention on the road ahead, plus a windshield and side glass inspired by the legendary Toyota 2000GT.

Drivetrain

Toyota offered no details on the engine, but it announced that the FT-1 concept is a balanced front-engine, rear wheel-drive model powered by a high performance internal combustion engine.

When can I drive one?

As soon as you buy the new Gran Turismo game of course, as this is the only way you'll ever be able to drive the new FT-1.

Competition

BMW Vision Gran Turismo

Until Toyota releases a sports car inspired by the new concept, the FT-1 remains a car developed for the virtual world, where it will have to face other virtual cars.

Like the BMW Vision Gran Turismo - a concept car that impressed us, thanks to its striking new exterior look, and the way it manages to combine BMW’s unmistakable racing genes with the design freedom that you can have on a virtual car.

Mercedes Vision Gran Turismo Concept

Another special concept car designed for GT6 comes from Mercedes. It features an aggressive design language, with elements inspired by the 1952 300 SL race car and an interior with F1 elements. It also gets a powerful AMG engine and an exhaust system with eight end pipes.

No specifications were announced, but all these concepts are rumors to go up to 200 mph.

Conclusion

The new Toyota FT-1 is one of the coolest concepts coming from Toyota in a very long time. It looks very cool and from the profile, it seems to be ready to be put into production. The front and rear are a little too "out there" to make there way onto a production Toyota, but if the new Supra look at least half as cool as this concept, then it will be one bad-ass car.
