Toyota GT-86 Convertible

Recently, rumors were leading us to beileve that along with theturbo version, Toyota would also toss the idea of offering a convertible version of the GT 86 onto the scrap pile. Well, new details suggest that the GT 86 convertible is not stillborn; rather, it is simply in a holding pattern, according to Tatsuya Tada — the man behind the GT 86 project.

Previous rumors suggested that the model was canceled due to expected high manufacturing cost, but in a recent interview with the Australian magazine CarAdvice, Tada insisted that the project is still "under study."

Tada actually went so far as to confirm that another concept version of the GT 86 convertible will make its way to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, which kicks off on November 22nd. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the success of the coupe variant. In fact, we would be even more shocked to see the convertible model axed.

The second-generation Toyota Tundra was unveiled back in 2007, but the first major update has just been unveiled at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. You shouldn’t expect any big changes though, because all the updates were limited just to the exterior and the interior. For the 2014 model year, Toyota is also adding a new "1794 Edition" - a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, on which the Tundra plant is located in San Antonio.

The most obvious choices include the addition of a new, taller squared-off grille, a revised front bumper design, squarer fenders and wheel wells, and an all-new bed design. It gets new sheet metal on the sides, a revised tailgate and an integrated spoiler in the deck. On the interior, updates are limited to new seats and a new-look instrument panel.

Everything else remains pretty much unchanged, meaning customers will still have to choose between three different engines.

What we would have really like would have seen are some improvements in the towing department, but maybe it will work on that later on.

Update 8/9/2013: Toyota has announced the full pricing details of the 2014 Tundra and it starts at $25,920. Plus it revealed more details on the standard features and towing capacity.

A few weeks ago, word came out of the Goodwood Festival of Speed that Toyota was considering setting up a one-make race car series for the GT 86 .

What it probably didn’t know was that the car already has one, or at least, is set to have one.

Over in New Zealand, the Toyota TR 86, a racecar built using the online-only 86 RC model as its basis, was first introduced to the public at last weekend’s CRC Speedshow in Auckland.

More than just being a show car, the TR 86 is actually a turn-key competition race car that was designed and developed for use in a variety of racing competitions, including its on one-make racing series in New Zealand as granted by MotorSport New Zealand, the country’s FIA-appointed national sanctioning body.

As for the TR 86 itself, the car was built with the idea of using it as a tried-and-true race car. That entailed stripping it of all its amenities and fitting the full breadth of racing equipment, including: Sparco competition seats and race harnesses; an FIA-approved roll cage installed by Neil Allport Motorsports; racing brake rotors and calipers; and a set of 18-inch Speedline alloy wheels.

It’ll also use Motec’s new C125 color data screen and logger, a data system that provides access to a wide range of information about the car’s performance in any given practice, qualifying or race session.

Similarly, work was also done on the car’s engine using the standard Toyota management system with its proprietary software package. The racecar’s sump was also strengthened to ensure that no oil spills occur and it doesn’t surge under high cornering forces. No specific performance numbers were given but using the 86 Griffon Concept as a peg, we expect the TR 86 to have close to 300 horsepower under its hood, a number that is more than enough, considering that the TR 86, even with a full fuel load, only weighs 1,195 kg (2,634 pounds).

Toyota Supra

The eagerly anticipated sports car tie-up between BMW and Toyota is set to take on a life of its own after reports have circulated that the two companies are currently in the process of developing as many as five concept versions to determine which one they will present to the public.

This leads us to assume two things: BMW and Toyota both have a whole lot of time on their hands or the two automakers are determined to shake up the auto industry with this sports car .

We’re inclined to believe the latter because the industry has dictated that everybody should be on their toes when building new vehicles. No pansies allowed, so they say. That’s why we believe BMW and Toyota are hunkering down and are determined to see this joint project through and through.

Drive indicated as much when it quoted a handful of BMW employees that the two companies are working on "four, five, or six" different proposals.

This then leads to the rather exciting speculation about what kind of car BMW and Toyota are building together. Is it just going to be a traditional front-engined sports car? Or should we prepare ourselves for something completely out of left field, like, say, a mid-engined supercar ?

To the credit of the quoted BMW employees, even they don’t know what its going to be.

There are so many questions that need to be answered, that much we’re sure, but what we can tell you right now is that the tie-up between the two brands will give birth to two distinct models.

Could it be that the long rumored return of the Supra is in the horizon?

Scion tC Sports Coupe

We have seen nearly every gimmick under the sun with various automakers, from Saturn and its "No Haggle" pricing — see where that got it — to Volkswagen with its "Sign Then Drive Event." One gimmick that we’ve been waiting for is for when dealerships start renting out their cars for extended test drives or just a weekend trip.

Well, the wait is now over, as Toyota has done just that. From the looks of things, about 85 percent of Toyota and Scion dealers across the U.S. participate in this program and Toyota claims that its rental rates are competitive with local car-rental companies. According to the Toyota Rent a Car website, you can rent cars, trucks, SUVs, Hybrids and even the 2013 RAV4 EV for a day, week or even months. Unfortunately, the 2013 Scion FR-S isn’t on the list of available models, but the almost-as-cool Scion tC is on the list.

So, we can now check brand-new rent-a-buckets off of our wish list, now we are just waiting for all of the dealers to morph into rental showrooms and Internet-based car buying — now that is "no haggle pricing!" Those two will likely never happen, but at the rate that Tesla is changing the car-buying experience, you just never know what will happen.

Toyota GT 86 Griffon by TRD

If you asked us, we’ve always believed that it was only a matter of time before the Toyota GT 86 would have its own racing series.

That apparently is coming closer to fruition after a Toyota spokesman told Autocar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that the brand’s resident sports coupe could make its racing debut in its own one-make racing series sooner rather than later.

Should discussions turn into reality, it should pave the way for the Toyota GT 86 TRD Griffon , which is in attendance at Goodwood, to go into production.

It’s still a one-off concept at the moment, a car Toyota and TRD developed to proudly highlight the racing credentials of the GT 86. It’s undergone extensive testing in Japan to make it fit for racing competition. It’s been reported that the Japanese automaker is trying to break a Ferrari lap time record with the Griffon Concept at an unnamed racing circuit in Japan.

Whether it breaks the record or not isn’t the important thing here. It’s the reported interest from Toyota to give the GT 86 its own racing series, something that we definitely would want to see.

Toyota ’s incoming chairman, Takeshi Uchiyamada announced in a recent interview that he will like that the new sports car developed in partnership with BMW to be a mid-sized vehicle, similar to the discontinued Supra. Not only would a Supra-like vehicle sell like mad, but he also wants to avoid building a car that overlaps the new GT 86 , which was built in cooperation with Subaru.

Uchiyamada considers that making something similar to the GT86 can be “futile,” but the final decision is left to the engineers responsible for developing the future sports car. If Toyota decides to revive the “Supra” nameplate, one that lasted from 1979 through 2002 , then it would be to massive fanfare from Supra enthusiasts, which would give it an instant leg-up on the competition.

What we do know so far is that the new sports car will be built on a heavily modified version of the GT86 platform and will likely be powered by an in-line four-cylinder engine from BMW. The engine will be offered by both companies in naturally aspirated, supercharged and turbocharged versions.

We expect to see the concept version at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show .

Admittedly, when we first saw this, our first thought was this was something MINI would do. But when we found out it came from Toyota , we weren’t surprised either.

Toyota knows when it’s time to think out of the box and it recently did so by presenting a colorful sports concept called the Camatte57s. The out-of-the-box part comes into focus because the Japanese automaker isn’t brining the car to an auto show.

It’s bringing it to a toy show, specifically the 2013 Tokyo Toy Show.

Essentially, the Camatte57s takes its name from the Japanese word for "care" with the “57” symbolizing the number of body panels it comes with. If you’re getting the hints by now, this concept is actually a kit car that’s simple enough to be assembled from the ground up.

The uniqueness doesn’t stop there, either. The car’s configuration is such that it has an open-top body with a 1+2 seating configuration. The seats, as well as the pedals, have all been configured in such a way that even kids can drive it. And as far as powertrain is concerned, Toyota says that it runs on electricity.

The whole point of the concept, according to Toyota, is to present the notion that people should feel more in touch with each other and with their vehicles.

Certainly, building a kit car like this - it measures 3,000 mm (118.1 inches) long, 1,440 mm (56.7 inches) wide, 1000 mm (39.4 inches) high and has a 1,800 mm (70.9-inch) wheelbase - will go a long way in fostering that driver-car relationship from an early age.

The 2013 Camry Hybrid takes the core Camry attributes to another level of sophistication and brilliance. Put simply, there are a thousand reasons why buying a new Camry has become a reflexive behavior for millions of Americans. Then again, there are more than a few nasty traits about the new Camry Hybrid, but none of them are deal-breakers for typical car shoppers.

So how has this Kentucky-bred Toyota dominated the sales charts for so long? It can’t simply be the bulletproof reliability, but that certainly helps. There are legendary mechanic’s anecdotes about running Camry engines that have never had an oil change in ten years, but keep humming along. For every whine about the Buick -style ride and handling, there are a million drivers who appreciate its anodyne driving style.

For 2013, the Camry Hybrid receives some interior enhancements, like softer plastics just a year after going on sale. With sales numbers above 350,000 units a year - every year - more than 50 new Camry’s will roll off the assembly line in just the next hour.

Toyota still leads the pack when it comes to electrified models and is asserting that lead with a new contest, the Prius Plug-in MPG Challenge, which pits 30 New York metro region drivers against each other to log the highest MPG over a one-month loaner period. The program kicks off its first wave of contestants today at a key hand-off in New Jersey.

The MPG Challenge underscores Toyota’s confidence in their Hybrid Synergy Drive’s ability to deliver amazing real-world returns, something that marks their models apart from pure EV’s like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S as well as conventional economy hatchbacks like the Hyundai Elantra GT and Ford Fiesta . Toyota’s point of view in the efficiency debate is valuable. They’re betting that their Prius Plug-in can entice normal drivers to "hyper-mile," a term meaning to maximize potential range through creative (and very slow) driving.

Can the Prius Plug-in Hybrid resolve the range anxiety of EV drivers and the disillusion felt by buyers of small gasoline-powered cars that can barely get near their official EPA stats – no matter how slowly they drive. The idea is to use the MPG Challenge as both a sales promotion and consumer education platform, while also highlighting the latest tech advancements in the 2013 Prius Plug-in Hybrid in the hands of real-life potential buyers.

How is Toyota positioned to weather the current state of evolving eco-car priorities? As the hard-core greens adopt full EV models, will Priuses start coming factory-direct in Taxi-cab yellow with barf-proof vinyl upholstery?
